Flood victims on Saturday pelted stones at Supaul administration officials. The victims, who have been virtually left without food, water and shelter, vented their anger at government employees, who went to assess how badly the floods hit the villagers.

"We want food, water and shelter, not assurances," said one of the flood victims. Many of them have been forced to take refuge on higher reaches and embankments. None of them has been shifted to relief camps. Even chief secretary R J M Pillai made an aerial inspection of the affected areas of Supaul and Madhepura districts on Saturday. He, too, admitted that the situation in Birpur and Chotapur areas of Supaul district was grim, adding 18 relief camps were currently running in the affected areas. "Moreover, food packets are being air-dropped in places surrounded with flood water," he said. Pillai said 18 motor boats have been pressed for rescue work in Madhepura district, adding more motor boats are being requisitioned for relief work. Meanwhile, sources said three children met drowned, when flood water inundated their houses in Machha village under Tribeniganj block of Supaul district.

Surging flood water has also inundated large parts of Gwalpara and Puruini blocks of Madhepura district. Flood water is flowing four feet high on NH-106 near Gwalpara, disrupting vehicular traffic.

Reports said almost 50,000 flood victims are taking shelter on both edges of Kosi canal at Beldaur without food or water. A long portion of the canal, which had access to the main road, has been washed away by strong currents, making air-dropping of food packets the only way to help the flood victims.
