A 17-year old male was struck and killed by a bolt of lightning Saturday while swimming with friends at Gouldsboro State Beach, according to state police at Swiftwater.

Police identified the victim as Thomas Golden of Olyphant, Lackawanna County.

Police said the lightning struck shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday. Emergency medical officials who responded to the scene tried to revive the 17-year-old, but were unsuccessful, police said.

Golden was declared dead by Monroe County Deputy Coroner Robert Allen, police said.

Two others who were also in the water at the time -- a 17- and a 24-year-old -- were taken to Community Medical Center in Scranton for non-life threatening injuries, according to police.
