An earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale jolted the city of Esfarayen in this northeastern province Friday night.

The seismological base of Qouchan affiliated to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, registered the quake at 19:08 hours local time (1538 GMT).

The quake was epicentered in an area measuring 57.42 degrees in longitude and 37.26 degrees in latitude, the report added.

There are no reports of any casualty or damage to property caused by the quake.

Iran is often hit by quakes of varying magnitudes as it sits on some of the world's most active seismic fault lines.
