Much of the US is dealing with some oppressive heat. And for some parts of the country extreme heat isn't something people are used to.

Forget about the three H's: hazy, hot, and humid fails to sum up the sizzling, sweltering, steamy summer across much of the country. The scorching heat that gripped the western end of the country for the past week is now blanketing the east as well.

Ten states soared above the 100-degree mark over the weekend and according to forecasts, the worst is yet to come.

In response to the nearly three digit heat, Milwaukee County kept its swimming pools open until 8 p.m. central time so residents could take a dip since the temperatures refused to.

Unfortunately, cooling stations and swimming pools can't stop officials in the west from sweating out concerns about the heat fueling more wildfires. In Utah flames cover hundreds of square miles.

Katrina Voss with AccuWeather said, "Since the air mass isn't moving we're just keeping the heat around and it's going to be sticking around for a little while longer. And in fact, some of these fires have actually started to be bigger."

In New York City the mercury is expected to hit 95 and feel like 101 so the power company is also feeling high pressure.

Con-Edison spokesperson Michael Clendenin said, "We'll be in command mode, if you will, monitoring the weather, monitoring the system. We just want everybody to get through the heat wave as comfortable as possible."

Comfort isn't always easy, when it comes to the dog days of summer.
