OF THE
TIMES
I have been reading Laura´s site since approx. 1997 or 1998. This is where I go to find out what is really happening in this dysfunctional world we live in. I worked at a major bank for 20 years then got the CALL. So that pretty much ended my banking career. Long story short hubby lost his finance job also. We decided we had to do the right thing and continued to pay bills using our retirement savings. When it became clear that we could not secure employment and that our funds would be depleted in a few months we filed for Chapter 13. We are both US citizens and decided the best course of action would be to move abroad (Mexico) because of the lower cost of living there. So we sold our cars, put the house up for sale and sold all the household goods that we could. We then bought a 15 year old van, stuffed it with everything we could fit into it and moved to MX. The house was sold and it was a short sale, meaning we didn´t make a dime. We live on John´s Soc. Sec. of $1,500 a month; I don´t qualify for four more years. That being said, both John and I grew up being poor. So we had a few years of really good income in the early 2000s. Both of us are extremely appreciative of what we have now. We rent and have food to eat. Food and shelter is all we need as we have become accustomed to living on a shoe string. And we have made some wonderful friends here. Mostly ex-pats who really don´t "get it" because they think we are doom and gloomers. So thank you Laura and Ark and SOTT for everything!
"We have about 50% of the world's wealth but only 6.3% of its population. This disparity is particularly great as between ourselves and the peoples of Asia. In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. To do so, we will have to dispense with all sentimentality and day-dreaming; and our attention will have to be concentrated everywhere on our immediate national objectives. We need not deceive ourselves that we can afford today the luxury of altruism and world-benefaction."
