Hurricane Hanna has made landfall in southern Texas, with US officials warning of life-threatening storm surge, strong winds and heavy rains.

Governor Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration for 32 counties, saying the coronavirus outbreak would complicate the work of the emergencies services.

Hanna made landfall on Padre Island on Saturday, and is now battering the area between Corpus Christi and Brownsville.

With winds up to 90mph (145km/h), the storm was tearing roofs off homes.

Hanna was a Category One hurricane, the lowest level on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale.

"Any hurricane is an enormous challenge," Gov Abbott said on Saturday. "This challenge is complicated and made even more severe, seeing that it is sweeping through an area that is the most challenged area in the state for Covid-19."

An international research project coordinated by the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), with participation from researchers of the University of Barcelona, shows for the first time that flood pattern over the last decades in Europe have changed compared to past centuries.

The study, published in the journal Nature, concludes we are in one of the most flood-rich periods in Europe from the last five hundred years.

The study shows that, within the last half of the millennium, the last three decades are among the most important periods regarding frequency and magnitude of floods in Europe. Also, during these three decades, distribution of the floods have changed, as well as the temperature of the air and flood seasonality, with a higher percentage of floods in summer. Regarding the temperature of the air, from 1500 to 1900, floods used to take place with higher frequency during cold climate phases, while after 1990, floods increased within the context of global warming.


Comment: It would appear the 500 year old pattern still stands, because the evidence shows that our planet is now seriously cooling: Antarctica's coldest March temperature on record - a 'global warming' destroying -75.3℃/-103.5℉


The data analysis identified nine periods of floods that were more abundant and the associated regions. Among the most notable periods are 1560-1580 (western and central Europe), 1760-1800 (most part of Europe), 1840-1870 (western and southern Europe), and 1990-2016 (western and central Europe). According to the analysis, the current phase is the third most severe regarding floods. However, this data is at the expense of the duration of the current phase of abundant floods, to be concluded. Now, floods cause annual damages accounting for more than 100,000 million euros, and the general tendency of abundant floods is increasing.

Heavy rains on Friday brought this picturesque city near Makkah in western Saudi Arabia to a standstill, flooding roads and trapping cars, media reports said.

Online footage showed a number of cars submerged in rain-soaked streets.

Civil Defense personnel responded to 30 reports about cars trapped as a result of the Friday rains that resulted in high levels of accumulated waters on some roads. Fourteen of those cars had people stuck inside and were safely retrieved, the Civil Defense added.

At least 132 people lost their lives as a result of heavy rains triggering landslides, and flash floods in Nepal.

"132 people dead, 128 injured, 53 missing and 998 families affected due to rainfall, landslides and floods in the country as of 23rd July," Nepal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority

Within the last two weeks, the Myagdi district of western Nepal was the worst affected with 27 reported deaths.

Search and rescue operations are being conducted continuously with officials and police personnel who are looking through the debris to find missing people.

The tropics are heating up as three separate systems are threatening havoc in the Pacific, Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.

Hurricane Douglas in the Pacific Ocean threatens the Hawaiian Islands. Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Eight is spinning about 415 miles from Port O'Connor, Texas. And in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Gonzalo is expected to become a hurricane Friday as it moves west toward the Windward Islands of the Caribbean.

While 2020 has been crushing records for earliest named storms in the Atlantic, including Cristobal, Edouard, Fay and Gonzalo, hurricane experts noted that the storms so far have been weak and short-lived.

Six tornadoes have been confirmed by the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) out of Western University in London, including one near Stratford.

An EF1 tornado caused damage to a farm and trees in Gads Hill with a max wind gust of 150km/h, a path length of 4.2 kilometers and width of 400 metres.

The NTP survey team also found EF0 downburst damage south of Stratford with a path length of 18 kilometres and max winds of 115km/h. An EF0 downburst was also confirmed in the Palmerston - Arthur area. That downburst had a path length of 53 kilometres and max wind of 120 km/h.

The NTP also confirmed an EF1 tornado in Beachville, near Woodstock from the July 19 storms. The EF1 damage was done to trees, with max winds of 150 km/h.

A breathtaking video taken during Wednesday's thunderstorm shows the moment lightning strikes behind the Statue of Liberty.

The 21-second clip posted to Twitter shows dark grey clouds hanging above Lady Liberty, with a massive strike disappearing behind her pedestal. The scene was filmed from a dock on Ellis Island.

An intense thunderstorm with heavy winds rolled through the Big Apple Wednesday afternoon, with the National Weather Service issuing a severe threat for the city and the Lower Hudson Valley between 5 and 9 p.m.

Meteorologists warned the Post of potential for weak tornadoes and widespread flooding in the city before the rain begins to let up around 10 p.m.

Between 1 and 1.5 inches of rainfall is expected in the city, though as much as 2 inches of rain could drop across the area depending on how fast the system passes overhead.

More than 9.6 million people across South Asia have been affected by severe floods, with hundreds of thousands struggling to get food and medicine, officials and aid organizations said Wednesday.

About 550 people have died in India, Bangladesh and Nepal, while millions have been displaced from their homes since the flooding began last month, said the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, or IFRC.

The organization warned of a humanitarian crisis, saying that close to one third of Bangladesh has already been flooded, with more flooding expected in the coming weeks. It said that 2.8 million people have been affected, and that more than 1 million are isolated.

Lightning strikes continue to kill people in India's eastern state of Bihar as floods have affected over 400,000 people in eight districts, officials said on Wednesday.

According to officials at Bihar disaster management department, 18 people lost their lives in the past 24 hours due to lightning strikes in nine districts of the state.

The deaths have taken place in Banka, Jamui, Nalanda, Nawada, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Jehanabad, Lakhisarai and East Champaran.

"Six people were killed in Banka district, three each in Jamui and Nalanda, and one each in Nawada, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Jehanabad, Lakhisarai and East Champaran districts," an official at Bihar disaster management department said.

Comment: Also on July 21, lightning strikes killed at least 8 in Birbhum, West Bengal.
