Rare October ice storm hits Oklahoma, knocks out power to 300,000

A disruptive and dangerous ice storm is underway in Oklahoma, with ice storm warnings plastering the map and more than 300,000 people without power. "Tree carnage" has been reported in Oklahoma City, where vegetation and power lines have been collapsing beneath the weight of the accreting rime. Up to another half-inch of freezing rain — rain that freezes on contact with the surface — is possible as more waves move through the affected regions into Wednesday.

The University of Oklahoma warned students of "lightning-infested sleet and freezing rain storms" that would hit the central Oklahoma campus, with thunder echoing throughout Oklahoma City. Social media was replete with photos of toppled trees, the storm posing a particular danger to agriculture.

It was the first time that the National Weather Service in either Norman or Tulsa had issued an ice storm warning during the month of October, and the pre-Halloween glaze was the worst ice storm to strike at any time of year in at least five years.

Ski areas in the Alps and Pyrenees have reported another pre-main-season snowfall to start this week, with the snow falling down to resort level at many areas. There was heavy snowfall in the Western Alps and Pyrenees on Monday and then heavier snow further East by Tuesday morning.

Although few are publishing official snowfall stats yet, numbers varying from 5-20cm (2-8 inches) were widely reported although some said they had had 80cm (32″) by Tuesday morning.

About 25 ski areas are now open in the Alps and Scandinavia and the first ski areas have also opened in Canada and the US for 20-21, where widespread snowfall across the continent has also been reported.

Some wet and unstable weather brought thunderstorms and heavy rain to the western half of the state this week.

But over on Hawaii Island, it was a different scene as snow fell atop Mauna Kea.

A light dusting was captured by cameras at the Mauna Kea Weather Center on Monday around 4 p.m. It's believed to be the first snowfall of the winter season.

The Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station said the road was closed Monday night, which is often a result of snowy or icy conditions making travel up the mountain unsafe.

More snow could be possible in the coming days as temperatures are set to linger near freezing.

"Denver's Monday high expected around 17F (-8.3C)," says reader Pieter. "That would be 14 degrees beneath the prior record for lowest high for the date, per Denver Post. That's a pretty good indication of how freaky this storm is given the wide boundaries for Colorado's 'normal' weather variability."

Meanwhile, according to reader Adoni, "Billings, Montana, fell to 16F on Saturday morning, comfortably busting the previous record of 19F set back in 1976 (solar minimum of cycle 20)."

Vail workers headed home to Eagle on Sunday evening reported drive times of more than an hour after snow blasted Interstate 70 in Eagle County throughout the afternoon.

By 9 p.m., nearly 9 inches of snow had fallen in Vail.

Snow was falling at rates of more than 1 inch per hour in parts of Eagle County, and the Colorado Department of Transportation on Sunday night asked motorists to limit or avoid travel if you don't need to be out, "particularly on the I-70 Mountain Corridor."

Snow in October is not entirely surprising in Michigan's Upper Peninsula -- but this much snow is record breaking.

The National Weather Service reported two broken snowfall records at their Marquette office on Sunday.

"We recorded 8.3 inches yesterday, which breaks the old record of 3.1 inches set in 1976! This recent snowfall also established a new monthly snowfall record for the month of October at our office. Total snowfall recorded for the month stands at 19.2 inches! This breaks the old record of 18.6 inches set in 1979. Weather records for the National Weather Service office located in Negaunee Township date back to 1961."

We haven't seen any snow in the Metro Detroit region yet. The Traverse City region has seen some snowflakes already, but nothing noteworthy.

It's only a matter of time, of course, before we start seeing snow in the Detroit area. Temps are continuing to drop as we head into late fall. Lows are in the mid-30s this week.

Parts of western Montana saw record lows and record snow on Saturday and Sunday.

Multiple records were set in Missoula.

The National Weather Service in Missoula said the snowstorm on Saturday was the biggest October snowstorm in over 100 years with 13.8 inches recorded at the airport.

On Sunday, Missoula felt a low of negative 7 degrees. That number set multiple climate records.

Already the snowiest October on record! With eight days to go! And more snow on the way!

The 7.2 inches of snow that fell on Eau Claire, Wisconsin, on October 23 broke the previous October record of 5.9 inches set in 1925.

The 8.9 inches that fell on the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota broke the old record of 8.2 inches set in 1991.

40F below normal temperatures with record doubling snowfalls expected and already occurring across N. America. USA passes new legislation focused on "Space Weather" and protecting electrical infrastructure and the USDA already indicating this years harvest totals are incorrect and the agency will adjust next year.
