Acetaminophen Can Cause Liver Failure in Infants

Image

Repeatedly giving a baby Tylenol or other acetaminophen products could be putting the child at risk for liver injury, including acute liver failure. According to a case report published in the journal Pediatrics, one child suffered such a liver injury after being treated with acetaminophen for 10 days.

Acetaminophen, long considered a safe drug for children, is widely used in both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) products to reduce pain and fever. While is one of the most commonly-used drugs in the U.S., frequent use can pose risks.

Migraine headaches and diet

Image

Migraine headaches have been around for thousands of years and have been described in the ancient medical texts.

If you or someone you love suffers from migraine, you know the symptoms: blinding pain, so severe it causes nausea, sometimes associated with jagged vision, flashing lights, numbness or tingling, lasting for hours.

Although a group of drugs called triptans can be effective at relieving migraine, preventing these headaches is a major challenge.

So I am writing to share my knowledge and bring to light research, references, links and resources to help people learn more about this topic.

Many factors may act as migraine triggers, including stress, odors, temperature and hormonal changes, but the single migraine trigger over which you have the greatest control is food.

Why I Stopped Being a Vegetarian

Image

I had a serious change of heart, and it happened when I realized my aversion to meat wasn't solving the animal welfare problem I was protesting about.

I was a vegetarian for a long time - the bulk of my adult life, actually. When I realised how most of the steaks got to my plate (and how pumped-full of antibiotics and growth hormones they were), I put down my fork and took a vow to never be a part of that system again. My research into the brutal American factory farm system and its effects on the environment was a life-changing stumble down into the rabbit hole; I discovered a twisted world of assembly-line death camps, crippled animals, radiated carcasses and festering diseases. I don't have to get into the specifics, but clearly it wasn't a compassionate way to get my suggested 46 grams of protein a day. So I stopped eating meat, cold Tofurkey.

Nearly a decade later I'm no longer a vegetarian. In fact, I couldn't be further from the produce aisle. Nowadays I own and operate a small farm where I raise my own chicken, pork, lamb, rabbit, turkey and eggs. I had a serious change of heart, and it happened when I realised my aversion to meat wasn't solving the animal welfare problem I was protesting about. My beef, after all, wasn't with beef. It was with how the cow got to my plate in the first place. One way to make sure the animals I ate lived a happy, respectable life was to raise them myself. I would learn to butcher a free-range chicken, raise a pig without antibiotics and rear lambs on green hillside pastures. I would come back to meat eating, and I would do it because of my love for animals.

Does Long-Term Cell Phone Use Lead to Brain Tumors?

Image

The highest-quality research data available suggests that long-term exposure to microwaves from cellular phones may lead to an increased risk of brain tumors, reports a paper in the November/December issue of Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography.

Although debate continues, independent studies with long-term follow-up strongly suggest an increased risk of brain tumors related to the use of cellular or cordless phones.

"We conclude that the current standard of exposure to microwave during mobile phone use is not safe for long-term exposure and needs to be revised" conclude the study authors, led by R.B. Dubey of Apeejay College of Engineering, Sohna, Gurgaon, India.

Healthy Food For Your Eyes

When it comes to foods for the eyes, carrots are right on top of everyone's list. However, this rich source of vitamin A is not the only ingredient of a healthy eye diet.

Vitamin A prevents night blindness and focal drying of the eyes called Xerophthalmia and can retard the development of cataracts and macular age related changes.

You can get vitamin A from two types of food sources: Animal products that contain vitamin A (such as liver or butter) or plant products that contain carotene, which your body converts into vitamin A. Foods containing carotene are usually yellow or orange, or leafy and green.

Antibiotics Increase Risk of IBS and Crohn's Disease in Children in Later Life

Image

Children given antibiotics are twice as likely to develop digestive problems, research shows.

Those prescribed penicillin and similar medicines are more at risk from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and Crohn's disease.

Scientists believe the drugs may encourage harmful bacteria and other organisms to grow in the gut, which trigger the conditions.

A research team looked at 580,000 children over an eight-year period and examined records of their prescriptions and medical history.

The study, published in the journal Gut, showed that children prescribed at least one course of antibiotics by the time they were four were almost twice as likely to have developed IBS.

Everyone likes a good story, but can a compelling narrative save lives?

Perhaps, according to an innovative study that tested the role of story telling in lowering blood pressure. Dr. Thomas Houston, of the University of Massachusetts Medical School and the Bedford VA Medical Center, led a group of scientists that investigated how pre-recorded videos of hypertension patients talking about their medical histories helped another group of patients with high blood pressure to control their condition over several months.

Study: Vitamin E Pill Eases Pain of PMS

Image

A capsule containing a cocktail of essential oils and vitamins could make PMS less painful for millions of women - not to mention the men in their lives.

In tests, the natural supplement cut monthly symptoms by up to two-thirds, with minimal side-effects.

It is thought the pills, which contain a mixture of healthy fats and vitamin E, make the body less sensitive to a hormone blamed for much of the misery of pre-menstrual syndrome.

Although PMS is often viewed as a minor inconvenience, it affects around three-quarters of women - and up to 40 per cent of those say it damages their quality of life.

What's in Fast Food?

Image
© n/aWould you still eat a McNugget?
Do you put dimethylpolysiloxane, an anti-foaming agent made of silicone, in your chicken dishes? How about tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), a chemical preservative so deadly just five grams can kill you?

These are just two of the ingredients in a McDonald's Chicken McNugget. Only 50 percent of a McNugget is actually chicken. The other half includes corn derivatives, sugars, leavening agents and completely synthetic ingredients.

There's no doubt processed food like that from McDonald's is not part of a healthful diet, and I'm grateful I've never had a chicken McNugget. But many Americans cannot say the same.

This sentiment was echoed by Federal Judge Robert Sweet in a lawsuit against the restaurant chain in 2003:
"Chicken McNuggets, rather than being merely chicken fried in a pan, are a McFrankenstein creation of various elements not utilized by the home cook."
Time Magazine reported that Judge Sweet "questioned whether customers understood the risks of eating McDonald's chicken over regular chicken."
