Baby in critical condition after being mauled by family dog in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

A 3-month-old baby is in Intensive Care after being mauled by the family dog, and the child's mother faces charges.

Angelina Lache, 27, faces charges of child neglect and obstructing an officer in the case.

According to court documents, the incident was reported Tuesday. Lache was involved in a traffic accident near 16th Street and Rogers Avenue around 9 p.m. She told officers that her 3-month-old son was injured in a dog attack before the crash.

The child was rushed into surgery at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, and is listed in critical condition.

A trailer from an RV park was whirled on to the roof of a Holiday Inn, buildings were shredded and more than a foot of rain drenched Austin as storms hammered Texas on Friday, killing at least two people.

The small town of Floresville, near San Antonio, was hit by a suspected tornado early in the morning. Local news footage showed damage to power lines, homes, businesses and a high school, though no one was hurt.

The body of a driver who went missing in floodwaters was found in a hard-hit area near the Austin airport, the Travis county emergency management office said. Military crews also found a body at Camp Bullis, a military training installation north of San Antonio, a defense department spokesman said. That person was believed to be a driver whose vehicle was swept off the road by flash floodwaters.

There were reports of other tornadoes in counties including D'Hanis, 50 miles west of San Antonio, were a bank and other buildings were wrecked. Several central Texas counties remained under a tornado watch on Friday afternoon.

15-foot wide sinkhole opens in central Florida
Aerial footage captures the scene after a sinkhole opened up on Interstate 4 in central Florida during rush hour.

Emergency crews are seen responding to the incident that shut down the I-4 exit ramp on Monday afternoon.

A car was trapped, front-end first, in the sudden depression in the road.

The driver is reported to have escaped safely.

Unexpected eruption from Lascar Volcano in Chile

Lascar, in the northern Andes of Chile, erupted unexpectedly today, producing a small plume of light grey ash that reached 2.5 kilometers (~8,200 feet) above the volcano (see above). The fact that there seemed to be little in the way of precursory activity (earthquakes, increased gas emissions) from Lascar suggests that this blast may have been a phreatic explosion driven by water flashing to steam in the volcano's summit crater or conduit.

Due to this minor eruption, the SERNAGEOMIN has raised the alert status at Lascar to Yellow, although the volcano is in a fairly remote part of the Chilean Andes—the Global Volcanism Program reports only ~8,100 people living within 100 kilometers (62 miles) of Lascar.

It has been over 2 years since Lascar last did anything and its last major eruption of Lascar was in 2005. However, it has produced some spectacular eruptions in the recent past, including the 1993 eruption that was a VEI 4. As with any of these small blasts, volcanologists will watch Lascar to see if this is a sign that it is awakening or merely a blip. Based on images on the Lascar webcam, the eruption appears to have waned rapidly (see below).

Popocatepetl volcano in Mexico erupts spewing ash and smoke

Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano erupted on Thursday (29 October), belching ash and smoke across blue skies, authorities reported. A spectacular column of ash erupted from the volcano at 8.57am local time. The volcano is located 50 miles southeast of the capital, Mexico City.

National Civil Protection Coordinator Luis Felipe Puente said in his Twitter account, ash and smoke rose 3,000 metres above the crater of the volcano, in the direction of the north east.

Mexico's National Centre for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred) reported that a total of 141 exhalations of low intensity in the last 24 hours have been reported, following a series of rumblings at the massive volcano in recent months. Mexico contains over 3,000 volcanos but only 14 are considered active.

Rare bird from eastern Asia found on remote Scottish island

A rare bird thought to have touched down in Britain for the first time on a remote island has got twitchers in flap - and are even hiring planes to catch a glimpse.

Keen birdwatchers have been spending hundreds of pounds to reach Papa Westray, SWNS, Scotland, to see the chestnut bunting.

It is believed to be the first appearance of the bird, which is normally found in Asia, on British soil.

Josh Jones, from birdwatching website birdguides.com, said: "It's really quite a long way from home. If accepted it would be a first record of its kind for Britain.

"It's kind of a big deal. Everyone is getting quite excited about it."

The small bird was first spotted on October 19 and identified two days later before disappearing until Saturday.

A ram with an unusual number of horns has become the prized pet of a farmer in Xinjiang, western China.

Gulibahati, a shepherd working on the government owned farm, spotted the six-horned ram earlier this year, reported People's Daily Online.

Although the ram was 'normal' at birth, he soon started developing an unusual number of horns. Gulibahati now plans to keep the animal as a pet.

Flash floods, triggered by heavy downpours, have killed six people in the two western provinces of Ilam and Lorestan in Iran.

Head of the Relief and Rescue Organization of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) Nasser Charkhsaz said on Thursday that flash floods have hit the provinces of east Azarbaijan, Ilam, Kurdistan, Kermanshah, Lorestan and Khuzestan since October 28.

Officials in Ilam, a province which borders Iraq, said three people were killed following torrential rains.

Shapour Pouladi, a deputy provincial governor for development affairs, said the fatalities included two people in the provincial capital of the same name and one in the city of Dehloran, which is located some 500 kilometers southwest of the Iranian capital Tehran. He said one other person is still missing.

Brazilian rangers, firefighters and indigenous communities are battling against a wildfire that has blazed for two months and devastated some of the last Amazonian forest in the northern state of Maranhão, including part of the territory of an uncontacted tribe.

The fire - which has spread across 100km at its peak - is thought to be the biggest in Indian territory for decades and has prompted the local government to declare a state of emergency.

It comes amid rising tension between indigenous "forest guardians" and illegal loggers, prompting speculation among officials and environmentalists that the blaze may have been started deliberately.

According to Greenpeace, the fire has already consumed 45% of the 413,000-hectare (1m acre) Indigenous Territory of Arariboia, despite the efforts of 250 firefighters.

Worst affected are the 12,000 people from the Guajajara ethnic group, whose communities have been surrounded by flames. There are also fears for the approximately 80 members of the Awá-Guajá, an uncontacted tribe.

An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 grades on the Richter scale struck Lima last night, according to a report by the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP, Spanish acronym).

The epicenter was recorded 4 km south of the province of Cajatambo and hit at approximately 11:02 p.m. IGP reports it had a depth of 100 kilometers with an intensity of III-IV.

Authorities have not reported damages or personal injuries due to the incident thus far.
