Severe flooding after a month of rain falls in a day in Gisborne, New Zealand

Parts of north-eastern New Zealand are experiencing severe flooding after one month of rain fell in one day.

During the last 24 hours, 97.2 mm of rain was recorded at Gisborne Aerodrome, according to WMO figures. Typical monthly averages for the whole of September stand at around 75 mm.

Flooding has been reported in Gisborne city, closing several roads in the area. Gisborne Civil Defence officials report that State Highway 2 north of Ormond is closed and anyone unable to return to their homes outside of Gisborne would need to find alternative accommodation.

Many rural areas of the East Coast have also seen severe flooding, in particular the small settlement of Te Karaka, where at one point during the day the Waipaoa River was rising at 0.8 metre an hour. Earlier today, civil defence authorities said that evacuation is being considered for Te Karaka residents as further rainfall of around 50 to 70 mm was expected during the evening.

3rd big quake in a week: Probable 6.3 quake strikes offshore Coquimbo, Chile

A 6.3-magnitude jolt has shaken Chile, which is still recovering from a deadly earthquake last week.

The new quake hit off the Chilean coast 230km north of the capital Santiago, about 50km west of the coastal city of Illapel in the Choapa Province, according to USGS.

A powerful 8.3 earthquake shook Chile on Wednesday, triggering a tsunami and the evacuation of over 1 million people.

The quake was the sixth-strongest in Chile's recorded history and was felt thousands of kilometers from the center as far away as California.

Comment: 2010 saw 3 major Chilean earthquakes over 6.0; 2011, 2012 and 2013 each brought 1 such quake. In 2014 there were 7 (3 of which occurred on the same day, April 1). This latest quake makes for the 5th in 2015. By contrast, there were apparently no such quakes from 1987 to 1994, or in 1996, 1999-2001 and 2006. See: For more detailed data on Chile's earthquakes for the past 100 years, see the USGS data.

Flash flood warnings in Hong Kong after more than 90mm of rain falls in just two hours

Flooding hit parts of the New Territories today after more than 90 millimeters of rain fell in just two hours in some places - almost double Hong Kong's total monthly rainfall for September.

Hong Kong Observatory issued an amber rainstorm warning at 6.15am and warned residents of the chance of flash flooding in some places.

Pat Heung, Kam Tin and Sheung Shui in the northern New Territories were particularly badly hit after about 90 millimetres of rain fell in just two hours.

In Yuen Long rainfall exceeded 40 millimeters, while many other parts of the New Territories recorded 20 millimeters.

Comment: All around the world flooding, in particular flash flooding following torrential rainfall, is becoming more common and intense with new records being broken.

Hunter stabs black bear in self-defense in Clare County, Michigan

Image
© Michigan DNRThe Michigan Department of Natural Resources is setting live traps, like the one in the picture, to catch a black bear that attacked a porcupine hunter. The hunter told the DNR he stabbed and injured the bear during the Thursday, Sept. 17, incident in Clare County.
A 46-year-old man was injured in what the Michigan Department of Natural Resources suspects was a black bear attack.

The man was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and released, the DNR said.

About 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, the man was hunting for porcupine and alone in a ground blind. He reported to police that a black bear came from behind, knocked him over and attacked him.

"Using his hunting knife, the man stabbed the bear, which scared it off. The bear is thought to be injured," the DNR said in a news release. "The DNR was informed about 45 minutes later."

Sgt. Jon Wood spoke with the hunter and advised him to seek medical attention. The DNR's Law Enforcement Division is continuing to investigate the incident.

Blizzard-like conditions strike Mt Ruapehu, New Zealand

Mt Ruapehu , Whakapapa ski area.
A dose of severe spring weather has snowed in skiers on Mt Ruapehu.

The blizzard-conditions have dumped more than 20 centimetres of snow on the mountain side but has confined a number of skiers to their digs high on the Whakapapa ski fields.

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts commercial executive manager Simon Dickson said about 20 or 30 people were this morning taken in two convoys of snow grooming trucks back to their cars at the ski field's main car park. Many of these had to get back home for work or school tomorrow.

Early-season snowfall for Hatcher Pass, Alaska

The snow line crept down to about 3,000 feet last week, as heavy rains in the Valley made for wintry conditions in the mountains.

Hikers and berry pickers have been flocking to Hatcher Pass to check out the early-season snowfall, which dumped a couple inches at the Independence Mine State Historical Park. Although the area is still a ways off from being skiable, the park access road is now closed. However, the parking lot below the park is open year-round, and hikers need only walk about a half-mile to access the park, which contains mine ruins and abandoned out-buildings that remain from the 20th century gold mining operations.

4.5 earthquake in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand, followed by 2 others in the country

Image
There was a decent-sized earthquake in Hawke's Bay overnight - but those who felt it rated it as "light".

New Zealand has experienced a couple of earthquakes above magnitude four within minutes of each other.

A magnitude 4.5 quake was recorded in Hawke's Bay at 11.47pm on Saturday night, centred 10 kilometres west of Porangahau. It was at a depth of 47km.

More than 500 people, mostly living in the North Island, registered with the GeoNet website that they felt the quake, but most said it had a light intensity.

Electric Universe: Spectacular 'Northern lights' show captured by International Space Station

Northern lights from ISS
© RT Ruptly / Ruptly
Where would be the best place to observe the northern lights if not from the International Space Station? Watch the ethereal display of colored lights shimmering across the Earth's night skies, captured from the Cupola observatory module.

The stunning time-lapse footage of the aurora lights is the product of the Cupola - an observatory module with seven illuminators that open up a 360-degree view - which has allowed for the recording of incredible footage from between September 7 and 12.

Comment: Aurorae occur when charged solar particles reach local magnetic field lines, where they enter the planetary atmosphere and excite its atoms and molecules. As they deactivate, the particles produce light emission.

The Aurora Borealis, the so called 'Northern lights' have been observed recently heading 'south', providing a spectacle even in parts of England. While the Aurora Australis, or the 'Southern lights' have been seen further north in New Zealand than usual. Researchers have also recently identified increased electrical activity moving towards equatorial regions.

With the increasing comet/volcanic dust loading of the atmosphere (an indicator of this dust loading is the intensification of noctilucent clouds we are witnessing) which is accentuating electric charge build-up, we can expect to observe more awesome light shows and other phenomena.

The winning Electric Universe model, and much more related information, are explained in the book Earth Changes and the Human Cosmic Connection by Pierre Lescaudron and Laura Knight-Jadczyk.
