On June 7, FEMA will hold a massive drill to prepare for a 9.0 Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake and tsunami

Map of Cascadia subduction zone
Starting on June 7th, FEMA will be conducting a large scale drill that has been named "Cascadia Rising" that will simulate the effects of a magnitude 9.0 earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone and an accompanying west coast tsunami dozens of feet tall. According to the official flyer for the event, more than "50 counties, plus major cities, tribal nations, state and federal agencies, private sector businesses, and non-governmental organizations across three states - Washington, Oregon, and Idaho - will be participating". In addition to "Cascadia Rising", U.S. Northern Command will be holding five other exercises simultaneously. According to the final draft of the Cascadia Rising drill plan, those five exercises are entitled "Ardent Sentry 2016″, "Vigilant Guard", "Special Focus Exercise", "Turbo Challenge" and "Joint Logistics Over-The-Shore". The primary scenario that of all of these participants will be focusing on will be one that involves a magnitude 9.0 earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone followed by a giant tsunami that could displace up to a million people from northern California to southern Canada.

We have never seen such a disaster before in all of U.S. history.

Do they know something that the rest of us do not?

A Florida teenager suffered "a huge gash" on his leg in a shark attack on Sunday afternoon, officials and a witness said.

The Neptune Beach Police Department said the teen was pulled from the surf by other swimmers after he was bitten on the leg. The lacerations were consistent with a 5- to 6-foot shark, police added.

The victim was transported to a local hospital where he is in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries, according to police. The force said "bites of this nature are extremely rare for our area" but urged beachgoers to "exercise caution" in the water.

One witness told NBC station WLTV that he was at a beach east of Jacksonville just before 3 p.m. ET when he heard a yell — then saw a woman carrying a boy out of the water.

"Someone [was] saying, 'Oh, my God, he got bit,'" the witness, who wasn't identified, told the station. "All you see is blood dripping and dripping."

The victim is 13-years-old, according to the station.

6 dead in Texas floods after record-breaking rain

Texas floods
© Michael Ciaglo/Houston Chronicle, via Associated Press The three men in the foreground had to abandon their truck Friday after getting caught in rising flood waters in Magnolia, Texas.

At least six people have died in flooding from torrential rain across large areas of Texas, and emergency workers were searching for an 11-year-old boy who was swept away in a storm-swollen creek in Kansas, the authorities said on Monday.

Record-breaking rain since the middle of last week has swallowed cars, damaged houses and led to the evacuation of 2,600 inmates. Thunderstorms brought more troubles to areas already saturated by other recent storms.

In an area including San Antonio and Austin, Tex., the heavy rain could not soak into the limestone and sandstone that characterize the Hill Country region, leading narrow creeks to brim with fast-running waters.

Since Wednesday, the thunderstorms have dropped pockets of intensely heavy rain, or "rain bombs," as meteorologists call them.

These have circulated through East Texas, Dallas and Corpus Christi, along with Austin and San Antonio, hitting some parts harder than others, said Kurt Van Speybroeck, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

As a result, rainfall has ranged from four inches in parts of the Dallas-Fort Worth area to 30 inches in Washington County, the authorities said.
