6-year-old killed, attacked by family dog in Lorain, Ohio

A 6-year-old boy is dead after being attacked by a family dog on Wednesday afternoon, according to Lorain police.

Officers responded just after 4 p.m. to a home in the 1700 block of East 31st Street, and began investigating, according to a news release.

"Officers were notified that the male was pronounced dead from injuries sustained during the attack, at which time the Lorain Police Detective Bureau and Lorain County Coroner's Office responded to continue the investigation," reads the release.

The Friendship Animal Protective League in Elyria also responded and assisted in the investigation, according to the release.

Police did not release any more details on Wednesday afternoon, citing the ongoing investigation.

At least 180 people have died from weeks of record flooding in southern Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state and 32 people remain missing, the civil defense agency said.

Torrential rains began on April 29 and continued for days, inundating cities across the state. Rescue and recovery work started after the flooding began to subside in mid-June.

Severe weather has impacted some 2,398,255 inhabitants in 478 towns, including the state capital, Porto Alegre, said the agency in a report, adding that during the height of the storms, more than 450,000 people were evacuated.

Brazil's government has allocated 85.7 billion reals (about 15.4 billion U.S. dollars) to aid and rebuild Rio Grande do Sul, according to Secretary of Social Communication Paulo Pimenta, who was appointed by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to oversee the reconstruction effort.

Rio Grande do Sul, an agricultural state located on the border with Uruguay and Argentina, has seen record economic losses from the disaster.

The incident happened during a torrential rainfall on Tuesday afternoon, July 2, 2024.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, some youths numbering about 13 were playing the game at Osemeke Primary School field in the community at about 6:30pm when lightning struck the players and their referee, killing two persons identified as Sunday (pictured) and Lucky.

One of the victims is said to be a Point of Service (POS) operator.

The third victim whose condition was critical, is said to have been admitted to a hospital in Asaba.

Heavy midweek rains — and even egg-sized hailstones — lashed the Western Balkans overnight, leading to two deaths in Montenegro and damaged infrastructure across the region.

Two people were killed after a powerful storm swept through Slovenia, Bosnia, Serbia and Montenegro on Tuesday morning.

The torrential weather came after days of sizzling temperatures, damaging houses, pulling out trees, and flooding streets, according to officials, sending temperatures plummeting.

The extreme weather in Eastern Europe comes after a heavy storm in Switzerland and northern Italy caused extensive flooding and landslides, leaving at least four people dead, according to local authorities.

Three people were killed and another was injured in lightning in Narail Sadar upazila on Sunday midnight.

The deceased were Ratan Roy of Jashore's Monirampur upazila, Milton Roy of Khulna's Nijgram and Nanda Dali of Satkhira's Tala upazila.

The injured, Chitto Malo, is now undergoing treatment at Narail Hospital.

Prodip Kumar Biswas, member of Kalora union parisahd of Sadar upazila, quoting locals said that the victims left their houses 25 days ago for grazing pigs and arrived in the Sadar upazila three days back after visiting different areas.

© Emily CurielHeavy rains from storms that swept across the southern part of the Kansas City metro area on Monday flooded Tomahawk Park in Leawood.
Morning downpours have left the metro with an afternoon filled with flash flooding.

Many streams and creeks have burst from their banks today. Heavy rain came during the morning hours totaling about an inch per hour for almost six hours. Once the rain finished, flash flooding continued, causing those smaller bodies of water to spill over their banks.

At 103rd Street and Wornall Road, the waters of Indian Creek are usually still. However, NOAA says that the creek has risen 12 feet in a short amount of time. The rough water flowed over the nearby walking trails and attracted crowds of people who wanted to check out Mother Nature's mayhem.

"It looks like the ocean," Hannah Biggerstaff, who works at a nearby veterinary clinic, said.

Biggerstaff said she and a co-worker went out for lunch and couldn't get back to their jobs.

Breeders in Argentine Patagonia went wild on social media after heavy snowfalls completely covered their animals placing around 1 million of them in danger of starving to death as the region goes through one of its coldest winters in the last decades. A video that went viral on social media shows the shooter walking through thick snow in the province of Chubut, with sheep fully under the snow except for their heads.

Under the present conditions, pastures were rendered unattainable, thus endangering cattle livelihood. The Argentine Rural Confederation (CRA) described the situation facing the sector as "dramatic."

"The situation in Santa Cruz is very complex, the snowfall extends from north to south and from the central strip towards the west affecting 50% of the cattle and sheep 'stock', about 40,000 cattle and 1 million sheep," said Enrique Jamieson, president of the Federation of Agricultural Institutions Santa Cruz and of the Rio Gallegos Rural Society.

Hail the size of "tennis balls" has fallen on the Croatian capital of Zagreb as a dangerous thunderstorm swept through the country.

Red warnings were issued in the capital and Osijek, near the country's eastern border with Serbia, meaning the storm could cause "possible danger to life".

Orange thunderstorm alerts warning of the risk of lightning and heavy damage were issued for Rijeka in the north of the country and parts of Slovenia.

Dramatic footage showed buildings with their roofs destroyed after a shower of hail pelted houses across Croatia.
