June snowfall for Mauna Kea in Hawaii

 Mauna Kea
An unusual combination of conditions brought snow to the peaks of Mauna Kea on Hawaii's big island, forecasters said.

Hawaii's tropical weather doesn't extend to the state's highest peak, but late Monday, a cold pool of air made temperatures drop below freezing. About the same time, thunderstorms moved over the island, high enough to bring Mauna Kea a dusting of snow.

The unusual event -- it does occasionally happen in winter -- provided some unique pictures of the mountain's observatory for June.

Forecasters said the wetter than usual trade winds will continue through Wednesday with rain expected.

Man loses finger in latest bear attack in Japan

Japan has seen a number of bear attacks in recent weeks
Japan has seen a number of bear attacks in recent weeks
A Japanese man lost his little finger after being attacked by a bear in western Japan on Wednesday, police and reports said, the latest attack by the animals on humans.

It came two days after human flesh and hair were found inside the stomach of a bear suspected of attacking at least one of four people in northern Japan who apparently died from such assaults.

On Wednesday morning, a bear believed to be 1.5 metres (4.9 feet) tall, attacked a 63-year-old man who was at a river in Shimane prefecture, area police told AFP.

"His face and left hand were injured," police spokesman Masuhiko Ito said,
without giving details of the injury.

But the Asahi Shimbun daily reported that the man had his little finger severed in the attack. He was conscious and sent to hospital, it added.

"The injury isn't life-threatening," Ito said, adding the bear ran away after attacking the man.

Unusual seismic activity continues around Yellowstone and California

earthquake map
Over the past few days the mainstream media has been fixated on the largest mass shooting in U.S. history, but meanwhile there has been highly unusual seismic activity along major fault lines in California and near the Yellowstone supervolcano. Let's talk about Yellowstone first. In recent months, the big geysers have been behaving very strangely and this is something that my wife and I covered on our television show. And now, just over the past week there have been three very significant earthquakes in the region. On June 9th, there was a magnitude 3.7 earthquake, on June 13th there was a magnitude 4.3 earthquake and earlier today there was a magnitude 4.0 earthquake. Yes, the area around Yellowstone is hit by earthquakes all the time, but most of them are extremely small. For earthquakes of this size to be striking right around Yellowstone is highly unusual and more than just a little bit alarming.

The map below comes directly from the USGS, and it shows all of the earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater that have hit the western portion of the United States over the last week. The three big earthquakes that struck southwestern Montana are visible on the map, although they are hard to see because the dots all overlap. But the main reason why I am showing you this map is because I want you to see all of the earthquakes that have been happening along the major fault lines in southern California in recent days...

Mount Hood saw some late spring snowfall Tuesday, which is a very rare occurrence for the mountain.

KATU Meteorologist Rhonda Shelby said we can expect at least two inches of snow at around 4,500 feet.

"A cold, winterlike upper-level air mass over the region will create snow in the Cascades. Maybe up to 6 inches in the Cascades back country by the end of the night," Shelby said.

The snowfall isn't likely to cause problems for the major roadways.

The cold air on Tuesday could cause hailstorms in the Portland-metro area. Showers and thunderstorms are still likely in the evening hours, Shelby said.

Although the 2015-16 snow season atop Mount Washington ends June 30, Mother Nature dropped 3.7 inches of the stuff on Sunday which allowed staff at the Mount Washington Observatory make this pair of snowmen
"It is June not January...right?" Mount Washington Observatory officials asked from on their Twitter account.

The comment may seem out of place with summer weather in the forecast for Massachusetts this week, but on Mount Washington, the seasons are easily confused.

According to The Boston Globe, the mountain, which stands at 6,288 feet, received 5.5 inches so far this June—with almost two of those inches falling Sunday night.

With the additional snowfall, the summit is on track to have one of its top five snowiest Junes since 1932, the observatory said.

Chris Legrow, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, told the Globe that Mount Washington typically gets about an inch of snow during June due to its high altitude.

The mountain's record for June is 8.1 inches of snow in 1959, the Globe reported.
