A gray whale calf that washed ashore in Gearhart Monday and then disappeared, reappeared Wednesday in Seaside, allowing the Seaside Aquarium along with Portland State University to perform a necropsy on the animal.

The whale was a male and approximately 10 feet long. "Because of the time of year and size we believe the animal was most likely stillborn," wrote the Seaside Aquarium Tiffany Boothe in an email. "Gray whales are currently migrating passed the Oregon Coast on their way to their breeding grounds in Mexico."

Boothe added, "The whale had been heavily scavenged upon by sharks before washing ashore."

After the whale was found Monday, attempts to secure it higher on the beach were unsuccessful.

More than 400 villagers have been evacuated after huge cracks and cave-ins appeared at previous mining area in Jingmen City of central China's Hubei Province last Saturday.

Fortunately, no casualties have been reported yet.

Cracks up to hundreds of meters long and 20 cm wide appeared in croplands of the Fengmiao Village at around 03:00 early Saturday morning. The land subsidence extended across most parts of the village, leaving fishponds dried up, buildings collapsed and roads damaged.

"We woke up after hearing a huge noise, like a bomb going off. I turned on the light and found the house cracking. We took our kid and ran out barely wearing any clothes," said a villager.

The village was immediately cordoned off by local authorities.

The incident occurred at a used up gypsum-mining area that was abandoned in around 2008. It belonged to a local mining enterprise named Baolong, which has been operating in the area since 1980s.

Winter storm to create dangerous travel conditions along 1,200-mile swath of central US

Winter storm
A storm will create dangerous travel conditions across a 1,200-mile swath of the central United States into the weekend.

Blizzard conditions could develop in major hubs such as Denver and Chicago.

People from the Rockies to the northern Plains and Upper Midwest are bracing for a new round of snow and travel disruptions on the highways and at airports.

Storm map
"Motorists and airline passengers may want to explore an alternate or more southern route as confidence is high that there will be widespread, major travel disruptions with this storm," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson said.

Mostly snow will fall from central and northern Colorado to northern Nebraska, South Dakota, northern Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and central Michigan. Motorists venturing along Interstate 90 should be prepared for snow covering roads, as well as blowing and drifting snow.

The storm also has the potential to spread accumulating snow to parts of the central Plains and the middle Mississippi Valley.

A stray dog has struck terror among the residents of Ulhasnagar after it went on a mad rampage and bit 10 children on the same day. All the kids had to be taken to hospital and five of them had to be admitted for severe injuries.

Sunday attack

All of the attacks were separate incidents as the kids reside in different areas like Sainath Colony, Saraswati Nagar and Raigad Colony. Vijay Kalbande, additional civil surgeon at the Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar, said, "The incident took place on Sunday afternoon. Out of the 10 victims, we admitted five for treatment as they had suffered severe bites, while the remaining five were discharged. Most had suffered injuries on their legs, while a few were bitten on their arms."

19-meter high wave in North Atlantic sets record

Waves crash over Newhaven Lighthouse on the south coast of England on Feb. 8, 2016, as the latest storm hits the country.
The U.N.'s weather agency Tuesday announced the highest wave on record - a behemoth that towered 19 meters (62.3 feet) above the North Atlantic.

Scrutiny of data sent back by an automated buoy showed a monster wave rose at 0600 GMT on February 4, 2013 at a remote spot between Britain and Iceland, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said.

"This is the first time we have ever measured a wave of 19 meters. It is a remarkable record," WMO deputy chief Wenjian Zhang said in a statement. Taller than a six-storey building, the mighty wave occurred after a "very strong" cold front had barreled through the area, producing winds up of 43.8 knots (81 kilometers, 50.4 miles per hour).

The previous record height for a wave was 18.3m, notched up in December 2007, also in the North Atlantic.

Automated buoys are vital tools for oceanographers, sending back data on sea currents, temperatures and swells for seafarers, climate researchers and others.

Rare iridescent 'rainbow' cloud appears above Caxias, Brazil

A Brazilian woman has defied Mother Nature's odds and captured a very rare and ethereal rainbow cloud hovering above Caxias.

The venerable National Geographic proclaims iridescent clouds - as they are scientifically known - are hardly ever seen, and that it's rarer still to snap a photograph of the majestic phenomenon.

But Mar Gómez did the double on Friday, filming the multi-coloured blob of candy floss and sharing the goodness across social media.

It takes a very specific set of circumstances for an iridescent cloud - also called "fire rainbows" or "rainbow clouds" - to form, National Geographic reports.

If you do happen to see one, it will happen late in the afternoon, often paired up with a thunderstorm.

Comment: It is likely that atmospheric dust loading from increased comet and volcanic activity is contributing to the 'strange skies' we are witnessing, the cooling effect of which causes ice crystals to form.
