With the Sierra Nevada wrapped in the claws of winter through May, the mountain range is blanketed in a hefty snowpack. Many mountain lakes are still frozen solid even though it's the first week of June and the summer tourism season is kicking off. In the Tahoe Basin specifically, an estimated 150 lakes are solid or covered in thick sheets of ice with their edges just beginning to melt.
"The rangers I have who are in the high country have pretty much concluded anything over 7,000 feet in elevation is still frozen," says Don Lane, supervisory recreation forester for the U.S. Forest Service's Lake Tahoe unit. "Lake Tahoe is at 6,200 feet, and the lakes above it in the mountains are all ice."
This isn't typical, at least in recent decades. "I've seen it happen only a few times over the past 40 years," he says.
Londoners were treated to a rare cloud formation which gathered over the capital.
Pictures taken in south London showed clouds which resembled a ''black hole'' according to one social media user.
The unusual sight saw a flurry of images posted on Twitter accompanied by various descriptions which ranged from ''creepy cloud'' to ''what the hell is this?'
Twitter user Iain Mellis captured a wave-like formation in the centre of the capital.
The clouds were identified by experts as Asperitas, a rare formation which was only recently given a name.
Comment: Actually, 'undulatus asperatus'. It's so new, it was only first proposed as a type of cloud formation in 2009...

David DuByne creator of the ADAPT 2030 channel on YouTube discusses societal changes as our Earth shifts to a cooler climate as the Eddy Grand Solar Minimum intensifies, a 400-year cycle in our Sun which will affect crop production, the economy and everyone on our planet. This is a timeline for what you can expect from now to 2023.
Since January, more than 70 dead gray whales have washed up on the coasts of California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Canada. That's the most in a single year since 2000, and scientists are concerned.
Last week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries designated these strandings as part of an Unusual Mortality Event (UME). Under the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act, the designation of a UME means that more resources and scientific expertise will be dedicated to investigating what's causing so many whales to die.
Seeing numerous gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) swimming along the west coast this time of year is expected. From about March to June, these large marine mammals swim north from the coast of Baja California, Mexico, to the cool, food-rich waters of the Bering and Chukchi seas, north of Alaska. They'll start their return trip south in November.
Strong winds and severe cold weather have battered the east coast of Australia, bringing snow as far north as the subtropical region of Queensland.
In what was described as a rare event, snow fell on alpine regions of New South Wales and in its neighbouring state on Tuesday, Australia's Bureau of Meteorology reported.
Queensland has not seen significant snowfall since 2015. Train delays and traffic accidents hit commuters in the Blue Mountains region west of Sydney after waking up to some 5cm of snow.
Rail passengers were advised to allow extra time for their journeys.
Severe weather alerts were also issued across Australia's east coast where strong gusty winds with speeds up to 130kmh (80mph) caused waves higher than 5m and trees to fall on to roads.
Ferries were cancelled for over six hours in Sydney, as Sydney Ferries said that using them was just too dangerous.
