Strong fires spread in different parts of Lebanon forcing some residents to flee their homes in middle of the night as the flames reached residential areas in villages south of Beirut in October 2019.
Wildfires spread through parts of Lebanon on Tuesday after forcing some residents to flee their homes in the middle of the night, while others were stuck inside as the flames reached villages south of Beirut, authorities said.

A heat wave in the region coupled with strong winds intensified the fires that began a day earlier in mostly pine forests around the country and three provinces in neighboring Syria. There were no reports of fatalities from the fires — among the worst to hit Lebanon in years.

Fire crews were overwhelmed by the flames in the Mount Lebanon region early Tuesday, forcing the Interior Ministry to send riot police with engines equipped with water cannons to help. Two small aircraft were sent from the nearby Mediterranean island of Cyprus to help put out the flames.

Flooding has affected 3 regions of Tanzania after days of heavy rain, leaving homes damaged or destroyed, roads blocked and bridges submerged.

Heavy rainfall and flooding in the Morogoro region from 12 October, 2019, has left at least 11 people dead.

Local media, quoting police sources, said that the victims include 5 pupils from Nyashiro primary school who were swept away by flood water from Mvuha river in Kibogwa ward. Six other victims were killed by flash floods in different parts of the region.

At least 4 people have died after severe weather and heavy rain caused flooding and landslides in El Salvador from 12 October, 2019.

According to media reports, 3 people died in separate incidents after they were swept away by flood waters in the departments of Morazán, La Paz and La Unión. The fourth victim died as a result of wind damage in San Miguel.

The heavy rain has also caused problems in the municipality of Ilopango, San Salvador department. Hundreds of people have evacuated and around 400 houses are threatened with collapse after the rains caused a landslide which left a 70 metre deep hole in the residential area of St Lucia.

The NDMA says that on an average, over 2,500 people die annually due to lightning. In Tamil Nadu, about 500 people died between 2011 to 2015.

J Radhakrishnan, Commissioner of Revenue Administration, Disaster Management and Mitigation, told the Express that a circular has issued elaborating Do's and Don'ts to be followed during lightning.

"It's an unfortunate incident and prediction of lightning as to the precise time and location is very difficult. I am informed by Pudukkottai district officials that the condition of the injured is stable."

Authorities are closely working with Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai to improve the dissemination of lightning forecast. "A six-hour advance warning is being received from met department."

Local media said an elderly man was injured after being struck by a falling object during the early evening quake.

The man received treatment after being injured, ABS-CBN television reported from the scene.

Engelberg in Switzerland has become the first ski resort to issue a powder alarm for more than 20cm of snowfall in 24 hours this morning after 30cm of snowfall was recorded.

The heavy snow was measured on the resort's Titlis glacier which only opened for the 2019-20 ski season last weekend.

Engelberg benefited from heavy snowfall that was widespread across the Alps yesterday, where more than a dozen glacier ski areas have already opened their high slopes for the start of their 2019-20 ski seasons.

"The normal temperature (east central North Dakota) on Oct. 11 is 49F, while the observed average temperature the day the storm hit was 31F. This represents an event in the 90th percentile so, temperatures in this range can occur around once per decade. However, the combination of cold with a winter storm is much more rare. The last instance of such a snowstorm this early was Oct. 9, 2005 in North Dakota. Prior to that event, it had been 130 years so, the cold plus snow is something that only happens once or twice a century," said Isaac Hankes, Weather Research Analyst.

"Starting late last Thursday, a historical blizzard enveloped the U.S. Northern Plains and northern portions of the Midwest, leaving 2-20 inches (5-50 cm) of snow covering the eastern half of North Dakota, and the northern halves of South Dakota and Minnesota. Additionally, sustained hard freeze conditions were felt in southern Minnesota, northwestern Iowa and portions of Nebraska.
