Raging wildfires in California have killed one person as firemen struggle to fight the spreading blazes amid a state of emergency. Hundreds of houses have been charred, with devastating photos showing homes completely gutted, only their foundations left standing.

The blazing inferno consists of two fires - the Valley Fire and the Rough Fire, both of which continue to gain ground as at least 5,000 firefighters try to extinguish the fast-spreading flames.

Hunter attacked by grizzly in fourth British Columbia bear attack in 10 days

Grizzly bear and cub
A lack of berries, and hungry bears focused on putting on weight before hibernation, are being blamed for the latest grizzly attack in B.C. -- this time in the Kootenays.

A hunter is expected to recover after being mauled yesterday morning northeast of Sparwood when he came between a mother grizzly, her cubs and a recent kill.

Conservation officers say there was nothing the hunter could have done -- he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time -- and they say the bear was acting defensively and won't be put down.

Other grizzly attacks in B.C. this month have occurred near Cranbrook, south of Invermere, and near Fort Nelson -- where the two hunters injured in the northern incident are now raising money to thank the first responders who saved their lives.

Can animals tell what the weather may hold?

Image
Can animals predict weather changes or pending catastrophic events? Research has been done over the years and the actual answer is as elusive today as in the past when that was the common way of predicting weather. Today there are satellites that read temperatures, cloud formations, wind patterns and a host of other information then beam the results back to computers that calculate all factors and give us pretty accurate forecasts. A few weeks ago we had a helicopter fly over our area with a large upside cone hanging below it by a cable. I found out they were checking the depths of the subterranean fault lines that are in our area to help accurately predict earthquakes. About a week later we had a 4.2 quake which we did not feel, but our dogs did as they were pacing around nervously looking for a corner to get into. Or the recent Indian Ocean tsunami that killed over 230,000 people but almost no animals perished except those caged. But the question still goes mostly unanswered whether animals, birds, insects and types of flora can predict weather.
