36 dead gulls found at park in Portland, Maine

Juvenile herring gull

Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is asking the public to report any dead birds they may find in the Portland area.

They say over the past three weeks, 36 dead juvenile herring gulls have been found at Deering Oaks Park.

Three of these gulls were sent to be tested at the National Wildlife Disease Lab in Wisconsin and the results of these tests are expected in the next 7-10 days.

Inland Fisheries and Wildlife say herring gulls are the only type of dead birds found at the park even though there are many other species there.

Portland's Parks Director though says Deering Oaks is still a safe place to visit.

'It started charging at us': Man recalls beaver attack on couple in Falls Church, Virginia

Beaver
It was "a big, black thing" and coming "straight at" David Souvannaphan, 52, and his wife as they walked along a path in Falls Church, Va.

And before he could figure out what it was, it attacked his wife's sneakers. Turns out it was a beaver, animal control experts said, and in a rare move it attacked the couple.

When Souvannaphan kicked it, he said, the beaver bit him. He fell, grabbed the beaver, looked it in the face and punched it several times in the head with his left fist as it bit and held onto his leg.

The beaver eventually crawled away. Police in Fairfax County said the county's animal control division later responded to the incident.

Photographer captures stunning image as monsoon lightning bolt hits '100 yards way'

Lightning strike

"You could hear the crackle and sizzle in the air," said Roger Hill, after the lighting bolt exploded from the desert sky.

Hill, a veteran storm chaser, was leading a photography tour in Arizona's desert at the height of the monsoon season in late July.

Hill and his group were watching a storm that had flared up over Kitt's Peak, about 55 miles southwest of Tucson, notorious for spawning monsoon storms.

As the storm collapsed, a cool wake rushed in their direction. This outflow then clashed with the hot desert air, initiating convective currents. Very quickly, a new storm erupted. "It formed almost right on top of us," Hill said.

Then the lightning struck and the thunder roared simultaneously. "It was instantaneous and it was extremely loud," Hill said. "It hit about 100 yards away."

Thanks BigAg: Bumblees have been proposed for U.S. endangered species status

bumblebee
Earlier this month, mosquito eradication efforts in South Carolina, gone horribly wrong, resulted in almost total devastation to the indigenous bee populations. The pesticide used to target the Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti species of mosquito, which can carry and transmit the Zika virus, killed off millions of bees. This single incident is one of many that have been laying waste to beneficial pollinators which has now led to the bumblebee's proposed listing as an endangered species.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Wednesday proposed listing the rusty patched bumblebee, a prized but vanishing pollinator once widely found in the upper Midwest and Northeastern United States, for federal protection as an endangered species, according to Reuters.

The Bumblebee is one of several wild bee species seen declining in the last couple of decades. It has now become the first ever bee in the continental United States formally proposed for listing under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

We're still a day-and-a-half away from the start of the fall season, but it sure doesn't look that way in Alberta's mountains and foothills.

According to the Prairie and Arctic Storm Prediction Centre of Environment Canada, wet snow started falling near Banff and Highway 93 early Tuesday morning.

As of 4:30 p.m., Environment Canada confirmed to Global News that areas in Banff received 32 centimetres of snow, while areas near Sundre received at least 30 centimetres.

Albertans have taken to social media with their updates on the wintry weather.

Tom Graham shared his snow photos early Tuesday morning in the Kananaskis Valley.

A necropsy may help determine what caused the whale to come ashore.

Berea, South Africa residents shocked to discover large sinkhole developed overnight

Glenwood residents and motorists driving along Che Guevara (Moore) Road on Tuesday morning were in for lengthy traffic delays on the busy road where a sinkhole developed overnight.

According to a resident at the Newton Place cul-de-sac, Dalone Jansen, he went across the road to buy pizza between 9 and 10pm and there was no sign of the sinkhole. "It was fine when I came home last night so it must have happened in the middle of the night. There was complete chaos this morning when people were trying to get out of our road to get to work. I'm lucky, I'm waiting for a ride to work so wasn't affected," he said.

About 7.30am all the cars on the tiny one-way-road were backed up. "Drivers were very scared, stressed and afraid their cars would fall in. We are lucky it stopped there and didn't continue. It makes us question the foundation of the road, it's so weak, a car could have fallen in if it was passing when the sinkhole began," Jansen added.
