Disaster management officials in Indonesia report that one person has died and thousands of homes were damaged after flash floods in the city of Bandung, West Java, on 24 October, 2016.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB), said that 77 mm of rain fell in the city in just 1.5 hours around midday on 24 October. Areas of the city were inundated with flood water between 120 cm and 200 cm deep in parts.

BNPD say that Pasteur, Pagarsih, Solokan Jeruk and Sukajadi were among the worst affected districts.

The heavy rain caused the Citepus River to overflow. Drainage canals blocked by trash were blamed for much of the flooding.

Streets were turned to rivers for several hours. Vehicles were swept away on the flow of the flood water. One person drowned in the flood water while attempting to rescue others.

Scientists raised the alert level for a remote Aleutian volcano on Monday after an explosion was detected on the mountain and heard by residents of a tiny village some 45 miles (72 km) away, a monitoring website said.

Cleveland Volcano, a 5,676-foot (1,730-metre) peak on the uninhabited Chuginadak Island, about 940 miles (1,504 km) southwest of Anchorage, was raised to orange from yellow by the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

The orange code, the second-highest on the scale, is issued when a volcano is "exhibiting heightened or escalating unrest with increased potential of eruption," according to the observatory. A red code is issued when an eruption is imminent or under way.

The observatory said that an explosion was detected on Cleveland by both infrasound and seismic data and heard by residents of Nikolski, a settlement of less than 50 people on Umnak Island about 45 miles (72 km) to the east.

Infrasound instruments measure air pressure around the volcano.

Scientists said that cloudy weather obscured Cleveland's peak in satellite images but that no evidence of an eruption cloud had been detected at a height of 28,000 feet (8,534.4 meters).

NOAA: US completes record 11 straight years without major hurricane strike despite global warming fears

Hurricane Joaquin

Today marks the completion of a record-breaking 11 years without a major hurricane striking the U.S. mainland, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

"I can confirm that as of October 24, 2016, it will be a complete 11 years since a major hurricane has struck the United States, as defined by the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale of being a Category 3 or higher," meteorologist Dennis Feltgen, spokesman for NOAA's National Hurricane Center (NHC), told CNSNews.com.

"The current streak of no major hurricane landfalls onto the U.S. mainland remains intact. The last one to do so was Hurricane Wilma on October 24, 2005," Feltgen said.

Category 3 and higher hurricanes are characterized by sustained wind speeds of 111 mph or more and strong storm surges that are capable of causing "devastating" or "catastrophic" damage.

A  surfer was shocked when he was bitten by a seal and left needing surgery.

Nathan Shepherd was attacked by the Australian fur seal off Shelly Beach on Sunday afternoon. The creature also went after three surfers, knocking one into the ocean and grabbing hold of their boards with its teeth.

The dad-of-two was due to have an operation tonight to stitch the puncture wound on his arm.

The Manly lawyer said at first he was amazed the creature was swimming so close on Sunday afternoon - until it turned aggressive.

Mr Shepherd, 45, said: "It was swimming next to me for a few seconds. I didn't think anything of it.

"I thought it was amazing to be out with a seal. It was swimming closer to me. It swam quite fast - it jumped out of the water and bit me on the upper arm.

A female dwarf sperm whale carcass was found on the Makena shoreline on Maui Saturday prompting a multi-agency response.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says a witness saw two small whales stranded in Makena on Maui's west shore around 7:30 in the morning.

When crews arrived, they discovered a dead 7-foot whale on shore.

NOAA, with help from Maui County and the Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources, have removed the dead whale and transported it to Oahu where a necropsy has been conducted.

Teams from the University of Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific University are taking part in the investigation.
