Suspected burglar hides in pond, is killed by alligator

A suspected burglar was killed by an alligator while hiding in a Florida pond to avoid arrest, police believe.

The body of Matthew Riggins, 22, was discovered floating in a lake in Barefoot Bay, Brevard County, on Nov. 23, according to multiple reports.

The lower sections of his legs and a part of one arm were missing, reports the Orlando Sentinel.

The 11-foot-long alligator was so ferocious it had to be euthanized by a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission trapper as Riggins' corpse was being recovered, according to Florida Today.

NASA maps show 2015 storm season was one of extremes

It was an uncharacteristically quiet hurricane season in the Atlantic, but the same cannot be said for the eastern Pacific and central Pacific basins, which got absolutely hammered this year. New maps by NASA and Unisys Weather show the extent of this year's storm season.

The hurricane season in the Atlantic and the eastern and central Pacific basins is now officially over. In all we saw some, 30 major hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones, most of them fuelled by El Niño, which appears to be the worst ever recorded. Prior to 2015, the greatest number of storms in a single season was 23, set in 2004. Incredibly, of the 30 storms recorded this year, 25 of them, or 83 per cent, attained category 4 or 5 status — again, another record (the previous record was 18).

Meanwhile, the Atlantic was comparatively quiet; the total from the past three years is the lowest since 1992-94.

Heavy rains saturate Portland, northwest Oregon, causing flooding, landslides, sewer overflow

Flooding
Heavy rains turned streets in the Portland area into creeks, interrupted bus and light rail service and forced the evacuation of at least one neighborhood.

Monday's flooding caused the closure of numerous roads, and heavy rains triggered landslides.

The rain also caused Portland's sewer system to overflow into the Willamette River. Officials said people should avoid contact with the river for at least 48 hours because of bacteria in the water.

A big sinkhole developed in a street in Gresham, a Portland suburb. Crews were pumping water from an elementary school in Gresham, as well as cleaning up hallways and classrooms.

The parking lot at Multnomah Falls, a popular tourist stop in the Columbia River Gorge east of Portland, was closed after a creek overflowed its banks.

50+ small earthquakes have shaken Pacific northwest in a week

earhquake monitors
The U.S. Geological Survey says our region has seen more than 50 small earthquakes in just the last seven days, including a magnitude 3.0 quake in Stanwood on Monday morning.

"I did not feel the one today," said Farmer's Caf server Kylie Johnson. But, she said just the news of the small quake is still a bit unsettling.

"It's true that there's been more activity than usual this week," said seismologist John Vidale with the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network at the University of Washington.

In fact, Vidale said there's been more recent activity at Glacier Peak since they've been monitoring siesmic activity in that area over for the past fifty years. Recently, there was a 3.1 then a 3.5 an hour later and then aftershocks.

New explosion of ash at Turrialba Volcano in Costa Rica

Turrialba Volcano
© RSN/UCRAn ash explosion at Turrialba Volcano lasted for about 10 minutes, the University of Costa Rica’s National Seismological Network reported.
Costa Rica's Turrialba Volcano, located 50 kilometers east of San José, erupted at 1:12 p.m. on Monday and launched ash and vapor into the air for about 10 minutes, experts with the University of Costa Rica (UCR) and the National University (UNA) reported.

This is the second event this month after another 10-minute explosion recorded on Dec. 7. also spewed ash and gases into the air.

Experts from UNA's Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) reported the explosion reached just under 400 meters in height.

UCR's Mauricio Mora at 2:30 reported there were no more explosions. Mora was conducting an inspection in the volcano's surrounding areas and said experts are evaluating whether the explosion was an isolated event or is part of an eruptive process.

OVSICORI on its website reported that current wind conditions likely would take the ash west, and residents northeast of the capital - such as in Coronado and Sabanilla - could experience ash falling on their roofs and properties.

Turrialba Volcano has seen constant activity that in the past five years has prompted several evacuations of residents and farm animals.

Storm Desmond has brought a waterfall back to life at a famous beauty spot for the first time in living memory.

While they last, the falls at Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales are believed to be the highest in England, thundering off a cliff 260ft (80m high).

Local residents and tourists gathered on Sunday to see the phenomenon, which is believed to be the first time the falls have flowed in hundreds of years.

Stu Gledhill, who filmed the scene, wrote on YouTube: "Talking to two neighbours who are both around 80 and have both lived in Malhamdale all their lives.

"They have never seen this happen before, and some suggestions are that it could be nearly 200 years since it was last recorded."
