The Lionrock typhoon, which battered Russia's Maritime in the Far East, has wreaked the worst havoc in 40 years, head of the Chuguyev district Anatoly Baskakov said.

The destruction is twice as devastating as the Judy typhoon disaster back in 1989.

"I have been living here for 40 years. This is the worst flood here since Judy back in 1989," he told TASS. "This year's flood is double the damage that Judy had left in its wake. It is seen from the level of water, which flooded houses up to their roofs, windows, which has swept away belongings, appliances, cars. The gushing flows are huge: 4% of our territory are covered by hills - and now they all are rushing down into the valley, where settlements are. In the Yasnoye settlement, the water level rose 2 meters above the critical line.

On Wednesday afternoon blocks of ice still littered the parking lot near West 72nd Avenue and Pecos Street, closing down the KFC, and leaving long-time residents like Alan Bell in disbelief.

"I mean it just busted loose," Bell told CBS4's Tom Mustin. "It just started piling up on cars and everything else. You can see I have natural camouflage now."

Tuesday's hailstorm flooded the parking lot of Five Stars Auto Sales, submerging cars, and sending a foot of water inside the building.

"Never seen anything like this before," said owner Maria Vasquez.

She arrived on Wednesday to soaked file cabinets and submerged floors.

"I wasn't expecting it to be this bad to be honest. Paperwork, titles, it's really bad."

Shark attacks freediver off Refugio State Beach, California

Shark attacks
A man was attacked by a shark at Refugio State Beach Thursday morning, a State Parks official confirms.

Eric Hjelstrom, a State Parks superintendent for the Santa Barbara area, said the victim ran out of the ocean bleeding at around 9 a.m.

The man told a park aid at the entrance station to the beach that he had been freediving and spearfishing when a shark came up behind him and bit him on the foot. The man then drove himself to a hospital.

Hjelstrom said he went to the hospital to interview the man in order to authenticate his claims and was able to confirm the attack.

The victim had a GoPro camera on his speargun and used the speargun to fend off the shark while paddling back to shore, according to Hjelstrom, who added he had viewed the GoPro video and recognized a fairly large shark -- possibly a great white -- about six to eight feet in size.

As two hurricanes and a tropical storm hover near the US, NASA has created a mindblowing time-lapse video which shows the true beauty of heavy winds and pouring rains from space.

Lester, Madeline and Gaston have targeted American coasts in recent days, making their ways around both sides - the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans.

The video, recorded from the International Space Station (ISS) more than 257 miles above the Earth, shows the eye of each storm surrounded by swirling white clouds.

Hurricane Lester, the first in the video, is still about 750 miles from Hilo, Hawaii. It continues to march to the west and is predicted to hit the island chain as early as Saturday, bringing heavy rains with it.

Fisherman uses karate skills to fend off black bear in Japan

Asian black bear
© Michelle BenderDespite Mr Aoki's success, police advised people against fighting Japan's numerous wild bears.
A 63-year-old Japanese man says he used his karate skills to fight off a black bear that attacked him in a mountain creek.

Atsushi Aoki was fishing when the 190-centimetre animal set upon him in what he said was an unprovoked attack.

In scenes seemingly reminiscent of Leonardo Di Caprio's epic tussle with an angry bear in the Oscar-winning film The Revenant, Mr Aoki was bitten and scratched repeatedly, including on his head.

"The bear was so strong, and it knocked me down," Mr Aoki told Tokyo Broadcasting System.

"It turned me over and bit me right here," he added, pointing to his bandaged leg.

But instead of trying to outrun the animal โ€” an Asian black bear โ€” the fisherman decided he would use his well-honed karate skills.
