Atmospheric river to bring persistent rain, heavy alpine snow to British Columbia, Canada

Steady rain and high elevation snow will continue through Monday in British Columbia, as a Pacific low lingers off the coast of British Columbia into Tuesday, setting up an atmospheric river directly pointed at the south coast.

Aside from high elevation snow, the heavy rainfall for Vancouver Island and the lower mainland has raised the risk of mudslides and flooding. The B.C. River Forecast Centre has issued a flood watch for eastern Vancouver Island, and a high streamflow advisory for much of the rest of the island, as well as the south and central coast.

Lightning bolt kills family of five in Namibia

lightning
Katima Mulilo-Tragedy struck when five family members were killed by lightning at Mazongendaba in the Chinchimani area of Sibbinda Constituency, Zambezi Region, on Friday morning. The family members were struck by lightning as they were inside their house while it was raining. They all died instantly.

It is understood that the house caught fire immediately when it was struck by lighting and despite that it was still raining, the house started burning. Villagers could not do anything as they watched helplessly as the housed burned to ashes with the family trapped inside.

The five were identified as 45-year-old Angolan national Mateus Diveve, his 37-year-old wife Pelekelo Diveve and their three children, nine month-old baby Kadoli Diveve, Maria Diveve aged four, and Tumone Diveve (5).

A small, dead whale washed ashore Sunday in Fernandina Beach near the intersection of Bill Melton Road and South Fletcher Avenue and near Beach Access 40.

Representatives from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were on the scene Sunday afternoon as were Nassau County Sheriff's Office deputies to help keep onlookers at a safe distance.

The whale was "anchored" to the shore in an attempt to keep it in place through Sunday night.

A necropsy will be performed on Monday.

Rare January waterspout evolves into tornado over Humboldt Bay, California (VIDEO)

waterspout to tornado California
The National Weather Service in Eureka writes:
A waterspout developed over Humboldt Bay Thursday, January 25th around 4:40 pm and moved through the Woodley Island Marina, dissipating only a minute or so later. Security cameras on the island captured the waterspout moving through the marina onto the island. Thankfully, the damage reported was minor. However, because the waterspout moved onto land, it technically became a tornado. This is the first confirmed tornado in the NWS Eureka forecasting area (Mendocino, Trinity, Del Norte, and Humboldt counties) since the Fort Bragg tornado on December 5th, 1998.
Of course, I'm sure some alarmist will jump at the chance to say it happened because of "climate change".

Too much of a good thing kept the Hurricane Ridge Road closed Friday and Saturday, with more snow predicted this week.

More than 9 feet of snow โ€” 112 inches โ€” was measured at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Ridge snow stake, according to the park road and weather phone line at 360-565-3131.

The road was closed Friday as park crews worked to clear it and the Ridge parking lot โ€” where high winds sculpted snow into 14-foot drifts โ€” of heavy snowfall, according to park spokeswoman Penny Wagner.

It remained closed at the Heart O'the Hills entrance station on Saturday because of heavy snow and high winds, according to the recorded message on the road and weather line.

Erupting Philippine volcano threatens to 'bury' nearby communities

Millions of tonnes of ash and rocks from an erupting Philippine volcano could bury nearby communities due to heavy rain, authorities said Saturday, as tens of thousands flee over fears of a deadly explosion.

The official Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued the warning as heavy rains lashed the area surrounding the Mayon volcano, which has been emitting flaming lava and giant clouds of superheated ash for about a week.

Rainwater could combine with the volcanic ash and rock to form deadly, fast-moving mudflows -- called "lahars" -- that could sweep away entire settlements, authorities said.

Shark attacks along US west coast nearly double in 2017 over previous year

shark attack
A new report says shark attacks rose last year on the West Coast.

The Shark Research Committee says there were nine unprovoked attacks in 2017 โ€” eight in California and one in Washington. That's up from five the year before.

Nobody died but some people were bitten.

The committee says most attacks probably involved great white sharks. In a March attack captured on video, a great white attacked a kayak in Monterey Bay, knocking the kayaker into the water.
