Police release name of child killed in probable dog attack in Topeka, Kansas

Topeka Police say a 2-year-old child who was found dead Saturday was the victim of an animal attack.

Officers responded to the 800 block of SE Carnahan around 8 p.m. on a report of a missing child. A woman had called 911 after she woke up and could not find a little girl who lived in the home.

Lt. Bryan Wheeles said in a news release that police arrived and met with the reporting parties for a search of the immediate area.

The child was found dead in the yard.

Topeka Police Department Spokeswoman Amy McCarter stated in a news release Monday that the child has been identified as Piper Dunbar.

Lightning bolt kills 2 farmers in Jharkhand, India

Two farmers were killed after lightning struck them at Khairadohar village within the limits of Naudihabazar Police station of Palamau district today, officials said.

The victims, identified as Putai Yadav (36) and Tulsi Viswakarma (40), were working in the field when rain accompanied by thunderbolt struck the area, officials said.

Both victims ran to take shelter under a tree, but were struck by lightning and were killed on the spot, they said.

The bodies have been sent to Sadar Hospital, Medininagar for post-mortem.

The Deputy Commissioner of Palamau, Amit Kumar has assured to provide compensation as per government provisions.

Rain-triggered landslide tears down buildings, school in Dayao County, China

A rain-triggered landslide occurred on Thursday night in a village in Dayao County, Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture of southwest China's Yunnan Province.

Up to 10:00 Friday, the landslide has torn down the buildings of the village committee, a village clinic, a primary school and 44 other residences. The road surface of a highway sank more than eight meters and the traffic has been blocked.

Thanks to timely evacuation, all the 158 villagers from the 44 families and 59 teachers and students from the primary school have been guided to safety and properly settled.

The local government immediately sent rescue teams and relief supplies to the site for disaster-relief work. The landslide mass is under 24-hour monitoring while geologists are working at the site.

A medical team has arrived at the shelters for medical treatment and epidemic prevention. Construction workers are busy repairing damaged road at present.

The weather is perfect for a beach day, but the water far from it.

"It's our first time coming to Siesta Key," said beachgoer Robert Carney. I heard a lot about it, wanted to come check it out, and we found out first hand unfortunately, they get red tide."

A walk on the beaches of North Longboat Key, and it becomes clear where red tide gets its name. The water a deep rusty color and thousands of dead fish line the shore. At Siesta Beach, it's a similar scene with birds picking away at what's left behind.

Florida Fish and Wildlife's latest report identifies those two beaches as having the highest levels of red tide, which is an algae bloom that produces toxic chemicals. For humans, it causes respiratory irritation, but for marine organisms and some birds, it's often deadly.

"This is the worst I've ever seen," said Justin Matthews of Matthews Wildlife Rescue. He's already rescued several birds effected by the red tide.

Rising floodwaters expected to inundate two rural NSW towns may cause problems with power and sewage for several days, despite lower and later-than-predicted peaks.

Residents at Forbes are being advised to evacuate as the Lachlan River swells to an estimated peak of 10.7m by midnight Sunday following 17mm of rain overnight Saturday.

The ADF, NSWFRS, RFS and SES are at nearby Condobolin, building barricades with sandbags as they wait for the water to arrive, and it's likely authorities will be busy in the area for another few weeks, SES spokeswoman Sue Pritchard said.

"It's slow to rise and slow to fall," she said on Sunday evening.

Since the rain began on August 30, the SES has received 2343 calls for assistance and has performed 96 flood rescues.

No people needed rescuing on Sunday but volunteers were kept busy saving horses, cattle and sheep at properties expected to be impacted.



Comment: Earlier this month flooding affected Victoria and South Australia following record rainfall.

A pair of moderate earthquakes rattled the coast of Southern Oregon and Northern California late Saturday evening and early Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A magnitude 5.0 quake occurred in the Pacific Ocean nearly 100 miles off the coast of Gold Beach, Oregon, around 10:01 p.m. Saturday. A magnitude 4.6 quake rumbled nearly 100 miles off the coast of Brookings, Oregon, nearly five hours later.

The first quake occurred about 6.2 miles down in the ocean floor. The second earthquake occurred further down, about 10 miles beneath the Earth's surface.

Neither of the quakes prompted tsunami advisories for coastal communities, according to the National Weather Service's Tsunami.gov.

While both of these quakes were moderate in strength, news of an earthquake near Oregon is always sure to spark interest as the scientific community has become more aware of a pending Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. The fault, which lies just off the coast of the Pacific Northwest, is long overdue for a massive earthquake, according to experts. Many predict it could be as strong as a magnitude 9.0 when it eventually hits (this video explains the significance of that number).

Some Brevard County, Florida, boaters came face to face with an angry alligator Wednesday night.

John Morgan and Jeff Dixon said that they were on an airboat on the Saint Johns River, when they encountered the gator.

The nearly 11-foot gator, which was blocking their path on the river, suddenly lunged at the boat and clamped down on it.

The boaters quickly accelerated and were able to get away from the gator.

The boaters said that the gator survived the confrontation, but it was still angry when they left.

Rare 'corpse flower' blooms at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire

A rare flower known for its large size and foul smell bloomed in a greenhouse at Dartmouth college over the weekend.

The university provided an online live stream of "Morphy" the 13-year-old Amorphophallus titanum, or corpse flower.

Morphy was grown from a seed by a private grower in New Hampshire starting in 2003 and acquired by Dartmouth in 2007, according to Dartmouth news.

The plant, which was estimated to weigh between 37 and 39 pounds, bloomed once before in 2011 and sprouted two leaves which photosynthesized leading up to the most recent bloom.

The corpse flower's name comes from the smell emitted from the green and burgundy flower which resembles rotting flesh and attracts flies and beetles in the wild.
