New Jersey gym owner says 'now we made it political': Becomes campaign rally location to keep doors open

New Jersey's Atilis Gym co-owners Frank Trumbetti and Ian Smith have fought to keep their doors open during the coronavirus pandemic and now, partnering with Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rick Mehta, the gym has become an official campaign rally location.

"We took a stand for our constitutional rights and for the rights of all small business owners throughout the country," Smith told Fox & Friends Weekend Sunday.
"And it wasn't intended to become political. We were trying to offer a solution to a problem where the government was failing, and it turned political. And that was because of Gov. Murphy's actions. So now we made it political just as much as he has."

Not just Portland: Protesters smash windows & set fires across Denver, try to breach Colorado State Capitol fence

Dozens of anti-police protesters have been swarming around downtown Denver, Colorado, setting fires and smashing windows, with authorities seemingly struggling to contain the hit-and-run violence.

Police officers in riot gear were seen guarding the Denver Police Department on Saturday night, but elsewhere across downtown Denver, local reporters described "ugly scenes" of arson and vandalism.

Comment: Trump repeated his veiled threat to sort out Democrat-run cities if they can't quell the violence on their own:
President Donald Trump has offered federal assistance to the mayors of cities dealing with violent "antigovernment" protests, saying he can "solve [the] problem fast" if they can't properly police their own communities.

The tweet comes as multiple cities saw Black Lives Matter-related protests again devolve into violence over the weekend, including Portland, Oregon, and Denver, Colorado.

Trump previously deployed federal agents to Portland after protesters targeted a federal courthouse by attempting to start a fire on the property. Though the tactics of the officers in dealing with protesters were controversial, and the president agreed to allow the city's mayor to take control in dealing with the ongoing demonstrations, violence in the city has prompted him to threaten a more federal response several times.

On Saturday, he offered the services of the National Guard to help control the "rioting" in the city, promising this would "end the problem immediately."
Unfortunately, the president is in a bind. Though his base (and all normal people) would be glad to the violence ended and the perpetrators punished, it would hand his opponents the opportunity to portray him as the fascist they've always claimed he is. And the citizenry suffer.

Governor Cuomo has become Reverend Shaw Moore from the movie Footloose after issuing a new set of commands for New Yorkers that includes a ban on dancing. This is not a joke. Syracuse.com reported the story.
There is no dancing allowed in New York's bars and restaurants, even at a wedding reception, according to the New York State Liquor Authority.

To control the spread of the coronavirus, Gov. Andrew Cuomo's liquor authority has also specifically banned darts, pool, cornhole, karaoke and exotic dancing. Bar owners are already struggling to stay open after being shut down for months. The new rules are causing a lot of anxiety as business owners are being threatened with their licensing if they don't comply.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is allowing rock stars to bypass the state's mandatory 14-day quarantine so that they can perform at the MTV Video Music Awards, one of the music industry's biggest nights that is set to take place August 30, according to a report from the New York Post.

The Post said that the state's Department of Health has granted the VMAs a semi-exemption to the quarantine rule. Musicians can "participate in the production of the show," a spokeswoman for Cuomo told the newspaper, "but they will only interact with other members of the cast and crew and will quarantine when not working."

She said the VMAs agreed to police itself with "rigorous safety protocols including testing and screening and compliance checks by a special compliance officer."

Seattle business owners slam city leaders after latest vote to defund SPD

tea shop closed riots seattle
© Google Street ViewThe owners of Steepology have closed their doors due to concerns about the safety of their staff.
Seattle business owners Andrea and Joe Raetzer of Steepologie Teas have closed their downtown store location due to public safety concerns, citing the Seattle City Council's 7-1 vote to defund the Seattle Police Department by $3.4 million.

The budget cuts mean the department will lay off 100 police officers including officers from the Navigation Team, a unit designed specifically to deal with the city's homeless population.

"We were putting all of our resources into this business, we are not funded by anyone else, everything put into the business came out of our pocket," Andrea told the Daily Caller. "This hurts, but it was absolutely necessary to take a stand and say we can no longer be put at risk nor can our team members."

The lack of police presence and the recent uptick in crime in the downtown area will push many more businesses out of the area, the Raetzer's told the Caller.

This suspect's wanted for a different kind of bearing arms.

Police in Springfield, Massachusetts, are searching for a man who gave unsolicited "COVID hugs" to strangers in a local Walmart.

The man, pictured on surveillance footage wearing a black T-shirt and camouflage shorts, has embraced multiple customers before informing them they were just infected with the coronavirus, according to the Springfield Police Department.

During one of the hostile hugs reported last Saturday evening, he took an item out of a cancer survivor's hand to hold him close, the department wrote in a Facebook post asking for help identifying the man.

"He told the victim, 'Just giving you a COVID hug. You now have COVID,' the department said.

The man allegedly laughed and walked away.

The suspect is being sought for charges of assault and battery and making terroristic threats, according to Masslive.com.

Comment: Whether in government or on the street, there's no shortage of people willing to terrorize people with fear of a relatively benign virus.

Fury as Rule Britannia & Land of Hope and Glory may be cut from BBC Proms amid BLM protest

bbc proms
The Defund the BBC campaign has hit back at the Beeb over its potential plans to axe the British anthems from the Proms line-up. Defund the BBC tweeted: "If the BBC do go ahead with stripping the last night of the Proms of patriotic songs #DefundTheBBC will organise a mass defund in retaliation."

Defund the BBC accused the broadcaster of "using every licence fee payer funded opportunity to signal its disdain for the British people".

Calvin Robinson, who describes himself as a Defund the BBC campaign champion, also tweeted: "Why is the BBC pandering to hard-left extremists?

"Last Night of the Proms is a British institution. It's one of the rare occasions we still expect a little patriotism; That's not a bad thing, our Britishness is something that unites us! #DontDivideUs #DefundTheBBC"

Back in June, protests erupted around the world after African American George Floyd was killed by white police officers in the US.

The protests also sparked a review into the UK's colonial history. Several statues and monuments were destroyed in wake of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Thousands plan to protest against tyrannical 'Stage Four' lockdown measures in Melbourne

Melbourne lockdown
A man is detained after refusing to move on during an anti-lockdown protest in Melbourne last weekend
Melburnians fed up with Victoria's Stage Four lockdown restrictions are planning to hit the streets in protest in defiance of the emergency laws.

At least 11,000 have already committed to the 'Freedom Day' protest, which is planned for Saturday, September 5th.

This is ahead of Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews' pledge to end Stage Four lockdown on September 13 - but he has repeatedly warned that could be extended at any time.

Rumblings about a planned protest have been circulating for days, with a protest initially planned to go ahead on the day the lockdown was to end.

That date has now been pushed forward to September 5, with a public Facebook page quickly amassing thousands of supporters.

18 year old stabbed and set on fire in the Bronx as crime wave sweeps New York

Winston Ortiz
© via The New York TimesAn undated photo provided to The New York Times shows Winston Ortiz, 18, who died after he was stabbed and set on fire in the hallway of a Bronx apartment building on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 12, 2020, the police said.
Winston Ortiz was shy teenager who family members said had become depressed in recent days over a breakup with his first girlfriend. So, he was excited when he heard from her on Wednesday afternoon, they said, and he left his family's Bronx apartment in high spirits.

He never returned.

About 3 p.m., Ortiz was stabbed in the chest, doused with a flammable liquid and then set on fire while he was still alive in the hallway of a nearby apartment building, police said. He died hours later at a hospital in Harlem.

The next day, police arrested his former girlfriend's brother, Adones Betances, 22, on charges of manslaughter and murder. Detectives believed that the two men had argued about Ortiz's relationship with Betances' 15-year-old sister, said a law enforcement official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an open investigation.

Comment: Just days after Ireland was placed 'partially' back into lockdown, and during which time it emerged that government ministers and other big-wigs broke their own rules to get together for a golfing holiday at a resort in the west of Ireland, the people - at least, a portion of them - are saying they've had enough...
