The 2020 San Francisco exodus is real, and historic, report shows

san francisco exodus graph
Real estate inventory change from February to July 2020, in metro area and city proper.
A new report confirms what many have been talking about for weeks: There is an exodus out of San Francisco, and the numbers are staggering.

Online real estate company Zillow released new statistics shining a stark light on the issue this week. Their "2020 Urban-Suburban Market Report" reveals that inventory has risen a whopping 96% year-on-year, as empty homes in the city flood the market like nowhere else in America.

The reason for this change is likely a combination of a few unprecedented factors that have collided this summer, resulting in a historic shift in the city.

Comment: We can think of a few other reasons people may be chomping at the bit to get out of San Francisco...

New Zealand government seeking to expand its internet censorship powers

christchurch shooting livestream
New Zealand has been in the censorship business for years, but the government appears to believe it's still not doing enough censoring. Legislation stemming from the government's reaction to the live-streamed Christchurch shooting seeks to expand its ability to block content it deems to be objectionable. In most cases, this means content related to terrorism or violent extremism. But the livestreaming of a mass shooting has created an open-ended definition for the government to work with in conjunction with its criminalization of this act.

Newsroom has written up a very thorough examination of the proposed law, with this chilling bit found all the way at the end of its article.
Lastly, the legislation makes it an offence to livestream objectionable content. [...] The new offence would be punishable by up to 14 years in prison if carried out by an individual or a $200,000 fine for corporations.

Color of Change is leading a national petition campaign demanding elected officials "defund the police, and invest in communities now!"

Wuhan pool party shows China is over the Covid-19 lockdowns; the rest of the world, not so much

The sight of partygoers in Wuhan, China piling into a water park without masks or social distancing seems like a cruel joke to nations where no measures, however disruptive, seem to be helping against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wuhan is where the first cases of the SARS-CoV-2 novel coronavirus were first observed in late 2019. The city of 11 million, and much of the surrounding Hubei province, were placed under strict lockdown to halt the spread of the virus. The lockdown included drastic measures such as people getting their front doors welded shut, if one is to believe photos circulating online.

Fast-forward to this past weekend, when AFP published photos and video of an electronic music festival at the Wuhan Maya Beach Water Park.

Comment: Funny that our 'freedom loving' governments have become more totalitarian than China.

Twitter 'accidentally' suspends satirical site Babylon Bee after it mocked Kamala Harris and USPS conspiracies

Twitter suspended the account of parody news site The Babylon Bee after it mocked Democrat VP candidate Kamala Harris and 'mail vote suppression' conspiracies. It was shortly restored amid protests about censorship.

The Bee went dark around 6 pm on Monday. Archives showed that their last tweet was a story about President Donald Trump "riding around in an SUV" smashing mailboxes "to make it impossible for people to mail in their ballots."

The tweet before that one was about Harris proposing a "housing plan" where "everybody gets free 10'x10' room and three meals a day" - a clear reference to prison, as Harris had been a prosecutor before getting elected to the Senate.

One conservative commentator pointed out that Twitter spokesman Nick Pacilio was previously the press secretary for Harris's abortive presidential campaign.

Amazon pulls disgusting 'realistic' child sex dolls from website in France

Amazon France has withdrawn advertisements for child-sized realistic sex dolls, following a campaign by activists. However, worldwide laws against the dolls remain scant, and Amazon's enforcement is lacking.

When screenshots of the dolls surfaced online over the weekend, French anti-pedophile activist group AIVI alerted the authorities. On Monday, Adrien Taquet, France's junior child protection minister, announced that Amazon had pulled the ads at his request.

"Banishing child crime from our society is everyone's responsibility," Taquet tweeted.

However, while some advertisements were removed, more remained active on Amazon France as of Monday evening. Activists provided links to several dolls for sale which clearly depicted minors, and whose manufacturers boasted of the dolls' "realistic three holes," and their "discreet shipping" - a feature likely valued by buyers, given the repulsive nature of the products.

Protester's arrest leads to crowd forming at Pittsburgh mayor's home

© Shane Dunlap/TwitterThe protest at Pittsburg Mayor Bill Peduto’s house comes one day after a BLM activist was seized by police using an unmarked white van.
Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto said he had "serious concerns" over the tactics used in the arrest of a 25-year-old protester on Saturday, after the detention led a crowd of demonstrators showing up at the mayor's home on Sunday.

Matthew Cartier, 25, was arrested on Saturday at a Black Lives Matter protest. A video cited by CBS News showed armed officers putting Cartier into an unmarked van; police say he interfered with public safety.

Local media footage showed a crowd gathering outside Peduto's home on Sunday, carrying signs with slogans such as "Defund the Police".

The crowd of about 150 marched to outside the mayor's house after rallying in Mellon Park, according to local media reports.

Comment: RT adds:
The use of unmarked cars to seize and detain protesters sparked nationwide controversy after federal agents deployed the tactic amid demonstrations in downtown Portland, Oregon. The Department of Homeland Security claimed its personnel were simply protecting federal property, but critics allege that protesters were grabbed off the streets without probable cause. Some of those detained were reportedly interrogated by law enforcement but never charged with a formal crime.

Development of 'sacred' mountain in Russia's Bashkortostan halted following violent clashes between protesters & police

Kushtau

Authorities in Russia's Bashkortostan have suspended work on Mount Kushtau, a limestone peak considered one of the region's most symbolic natural sights, after violent clashes between protesters, police, and private security.

Some locals in the republic, where Bashkirs - an indigenous, mostly Sunni Muslim, Turkic ethnic group - make up about a third of the population, consider the area to be 'sacred.' Kushtau is one of Bashkortostan's four 'shikhans' - solitary peaks, surrounded by flat steppe. They believe its future is threatened by industrial development.

In August 2019, the Bashkir Soda Company (BSC), one of Russia's largest chemical companies, received permission to extract the limestone from the mountain. Without access to new rock, the business could shut down in 2022 due to a lack of raw materials, threatening the jobs of many residents of the nearest big city, Sterlitamak. The decision has angered some locals, who are fearful that Kushtau will have the same fate as one of the other shikhans, Shakhtau, which has been mined by the company and has almost disappeared.
