Car rams protesters demanding Netanyahu's resignation in Tel Aviv, 5 injured

israel protest 2024
Israeli police say the driver refused pleas to stop when he drove his vehicle into the crowd
A car plowed into a crowd of protesters demanding the resignation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv on Saturday evening, injuring five people. The driver was detained on the spot.

According to a brief statement from police on X (formerly Twitter), the incident took place on Namir Road, where an anti-government rally was being held. The demonstration was part of countrywide protests in which people urged Netanyahu to step down and called for the return of hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza.

Comment: Notably, this has happened at least once before, such as during the protests of July 2023, which were basically over the same issue.

There was also a seemingly unrelated car ramming attack in January 2024, also in Tel Aviv, but this time 'Palestinians' were blamed.

And other protest reports from Israel from the last week or so: Woe be to a society that fosters monsters:

Haiti has descended into "unprecedented" levels of violence and cruelty, a top human rights observer has claimed

A top UN human rights expert has likened conditions in Haiti to the "worst of times" in Somalia, saying the Caribbean nation has descended into unprecedented violence and chaos since gangs took over much of the capital last month.

"I'm running out of words, frankly, at this point," human rights observer William O'Neill told the UN Human Rights Council earlier this week. "It's apocalyptic, it's like the end of times." He added that the capital, Port-au-Prince, is suffering "a level of intensity and cruelty in the violence that is simply unprecedented in my experience in Haiti."

Comment: The situation is a culmination of over a century of US interference in a society that was one of the first to throw off its colonial masters.

The turning of the DEI tide

texas flag
The University of Texas has announced that, following the mandate of the state legislature, it will unwind its DEI bureaucracy. Specifically, administrators will close down its DEI division, require some DEI deans to return to teaching, and eliminate other DEI positions altogether.

This is the culmination of a year-long campaign to abolish DEI and restore the principle of colorblind equality.

McDonald's signed a deal to purchase all 225 of the restaurants that comprise its Israel franchise, the American fast-food chain announced, following months of dramatically lower sales due to pro-Palestinian boycott action amid the Israel-Hamas war.

The restaurant outlets in Israel have been owned by local licensee Alonyal Ltd., which is owned by Israeli businessman Omri Padan, for more than 30 years.

"An agreement to sell Alonyal to McDonald's Corporation has been signed," the McDonald's statement said Thursday. "Upon completion of the transaction, McDonald's Corporation will own Alonyal Limited's restaurants and operations, and employees will be retained on equivalent terms." The company did not disclose the purchase amount.

Russian city declares state of emergency over 'nuclear contamination' fears

Khabarovsk
A state of emergency is to remain for at least three more days in the Industrial district of the city of Khabarovsk
A state of emergency has been declared in a Russian city due to nuclear contamination.

The Russian authorities have not explained what is causing the alarming radiation in the Khabarovsk specialised plant 'Radon', southeast Russia.

A mystery radiation source was today 'removed and placed in a protective container' and 'transported to a radioactive waste storage facility'.

Yet a state of emergency is to remain for at least three more days in the Industrial district of the city, as law enforcement agencies examine the origin of the leak.

Comment: It remains to be seen whether this is corruption, negligence, or even sabotage:

Tennessee Lawmakers pass bill targeting mRNA vaccines in food

lettuce
Following concerns over research to embed vaccines in produce, the Tennessee Senate has passed a bill which would require any food containing vaccines or vaccine materials to be labeled as pharmaceutical drugs.

The bill, HB 1894, was passed by the Senate in a 23-6 vote on March 28 after the state House passed it 73-22 on March 4. It awaits the governor's signature.

The bill comes in response to a University of California-Riverside research project looking into whether mRNA which targets pathogens could be implanted into edible plants, which would then be consumed. The research was funded by a $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.

"You would have to get a prescription for that to make sure that we know how much of the lettuce you have to eat based off of your body type so we don't under-vaccinate you, which leads to the possibility of the efficacy of the drug being compromised, or we overdose you based off how much lettuce is [eaten]," said Republican state Rep. Scott Cepicky during a House committee meeting in February, WKRN-TV reports.

The fury of Europe's farmers

farmers revolt
The continent-wide revolt against the green agenda has shaken the EU elites to their core.

Europe's farmers are rising up - and the elites are terrified. In France, farmers recently staged a four-day 'siege of Paris', blocking major roads around the French capital. In January, thousands of tractors descended on Berlin in Germany, lining the streets leading up to the Brandenburg Gate. In Brussels, farmers have gathered from all over Europe to demonstrate against the EU and pelt the European Parliament with eggs.

In the Netherlands, tractors have caused the longest traffic jam in the nation's history, as part of a years-long battle between farmers and the government. This farmers' revolt is now truly Europe-wide. From Portugal to Poland, from Ireland to Italy, almost every EU country has been rocked by protests. So what is driving this populist uprising? What do the farmers want?

'Genocide enablers': Gaza and the corporate media

A key function of the state-corporate media is to deny reality. They do supply news. But it is no accident that they supply news of a type that covers up the crimes of elite power.

However, the appalling violence and destruction being inflicted in Gaza by Israel are simply too great to conceal. We may well be living through an unprecedented era where the vast crimes of the West, and the complicity of major news organisations, have never been more exposed to the public.

Professor Jeffrey Sachs, the US economist and Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, said in a recent interview:
'We are seeing a massacre in front of our eyes — it is absolutely inhumane; it is absolutely war crimes; it is arguably, I personally think, likely genocidal according to the legal standards of the 1948 Genocide Convention.'

German Intelligence Chief defends his efforts to police the "thought and speech patterns" of citizens

Thomas Haldenwang
The German Interior Ministry continues to defend its controversial and widely criticised plans to restrict the speech, travel and economic activity of political dissidents. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), our domestic intelligence service and political police, have sacrificed substantial popular regard in the face of this campaign. According to a poll published last month, a plurality of Germans believe that the BfV is being misused for political purposes. The sentiment is prominent across all parties, except of course for the Greens, who believe that all is well with the Federal Republic.

The creepy, dissolute and rodent-looking BfV chief, Thomas Haldenwang, has taken to the pages of the Frankfurter Allgemeine to defend the conduct of his office and his plans to shape the "thought and speech patterns" of ordinary people through official repression.

The thing about "freedom of expression," Haldenwang explains, is that it "is not carte blanche for enemies of the constitution".

Comment: No one has documented Germany's slide into authoritarianism through censorship and legal proceedings better than writer CJ Hopkins - who has been persecuted by the German government for his outspoken (and accurate) political and social commentary:

Is inflation harmless?

currency broken watch
The New York Times has published a strange article by Justin Wolfers, an economist at the University of Michigan. The headline is that his economist brain makes him say with regard to inflation: "Don't worry, be happy." The article gives the reader as much reason to trust economists as you do epidemiologists, which is to say not at all.

The idea is that if both prices and income go up together, it all pans out in the wash. Yes, the article goes on for 1,000 words to say that but that's its essence. The thought is that the 25 percent inflation we've experienced over the last 4 years really hasn't done any damage. Money is neutral to economic exchange and so is inflation.

So just chill!
Inflation is a lot scarier when you fear that today's price rises will permanently undermine your ability to make ends meet. Perhaps this explains why the recent moderate burst of inflation has created seemingly more anxiety than previous inflationary episodes...we're in the midst of a macroeconomic anxiety attack.
