Chinese 'human rights' is set to top the news again, let's talk about the Xinjiang Victims Database

The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights kicked off its 73rd Session on February 13 and runs through March 3. NGOs are rushing to submit their reports and focus on the alleged issues of some countries. Leading the charge, Amnesty International has already submitted its report on China.

The lengthy report levels numerous accusations against Beijing, which you can read for yourself. The beginning, however, points to a few topics that have already made their way through the media, including discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities, with references to political indoctrination and forced cultural assimilation of Muslims in Xinjiang. It also includes similar examples of religious repression in Tibet.

Tibet has long been a touchy subject, with Westerners proclaiming "Free Tibet" or rattling off some examples of repression in the region. This is far from the case. The Chinese government preserves the Tibetan language and culture and acts as an official mediator for the Buddhist faith when determining a living Buddha. This is an important function that actually keeps the faith alive and prosperous.

A secretive Israeli group allegedly manipulated more than 30 elections worldwide using hacking and state-of-the art disinformation techniques, according to an investigation conducted by an international consortium of journalists.

Several media outlets, including the Guardian, Le Monde, ZDF, Der Spiegel and El Pais looked into a team of contractors known as 'Team Jorge', run by Tal Hanan, a 50-year-old former Israeli secret services operative. The latter has denied any wrongdoing.

To expose the group's alleged clandestine operations, the reporters passed themselves as prospective clients while covertly recording several hours of footage inside the meetings with the unit's members. Hanan allegedly told reporters that his services could be used by both private companies and intelligence agencies, with operations taking place in Europe and Africa, as well as in North, Central and South America.

In a video clip released by The Guardian on Wednesday, Hanan himself appears to boast that his group has completed "33 presidential-level campaigns ... 27 of which were successful." He also reportedly said that he took part in two "major projects" in the US, adding that he does not engage directly in the nation's politics.

Texas Department of Public Safety working through Gov. Greg Abbott's border security mission, Operation Lone Star, broke up a major fentanyl lab in Houston. But a day after four suspects were arrested, they were released on bond.

Houston is a major destination and distribution center for human and drug smuggling and trafficking coming from the southern border, law enforcement officers told The Center Square. Several task forces have been established at the border and along Highway 59 to interdict cartel-related activity. Despite their efforts, traffickers have set up operations in Houston.

On Monday, four people were arrested in Northwest Houston after DPS OLS officers uncovered a criminal operation being conducted at car rental facility. Speedy Slingshot Rentals, located at 10135 Sussex Lane, claims to rent "Premier Slingshot and Exotic Vehicles."

However, inside the warehouse, DPS CID special agents found three pill press machines to make fake prescription pills laced with fentanyl, 17 pounds of fentanyl precursors and a kilo of counterfeit Xanax pills with suspected fentanyl. Two milligrams of fentanyl is considered a lethal dose. One fake prescription pill can kill. They also uncovered two kilos of cocaine, 44 pounds of marijuana, several stolen guns and a stolen car.

President Biden's nominee for the Federal Communications Commission, Gigi Sohn, had her third confirmation hearing since Biden first chose her in 2021, and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, noted that during a process marked by controversy, Sohn made political contributions to senators who would ultimately be voting on her nomination.

Cruz pointed out during Tuesday's hearing that in the 15 months since Sohn's initial nomination, she made a dozen donations to Democratic senators who would be deciding her fate.
"I've been in the Senate ten years. I have never seen a nominee make contributions to senators while your nomination is pending. I've never seen that once. I had my staff search the records. If we could find anyone in the Trump administration who had done that. My staff was unable to find that."

Cruz then asked Sohn if she thinks it was "poor judgment" on her part to make these donations to Senate Democrats during her nomination process.
"Senator, I'm a citizen who just wanted to participate in the Democratic process," Sohn responded. "The answer is no."

Two people were arrested and detained Tuesday in connection to the assassination of Haiti's former president.

The news was according to one of the suspect's lawyers, the New York Times reported:
The suspects, Antonio Intriago, a Venezuelan-American businessman, and Arcángel Pretel Ortiz, a Colombian-American citizen, were detained in South Florida and were expected to appear in court later on Tuesday, a lawyer for Mr. Intriago said.

Their company, CTU Security, based in Doral, Florida, recruited some 20 former Colombian soldiers who helped storm the home of the Haitian president, Jovenel Moïse, the night of his assassination in July 2021. Lawyers for Mr. Intriago previously admitted that CTU recruited the men.
Joseph Desmond, Intriago's lawyer, said he planned to enter a not guilty plea, and confirmed Pretel's arrest and that of a third suspect named Walter Veintemilla. Per the Times, he is an American citizen and financier. He reportedly lent over $170,000 to CTU Security for operations in Haiti.

Video footage shows the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Markenzy Lapointe, making the announcement. He also added a fourth person had been arrested.

A South Dakota lawmaker recently implied that traditional, two-parent families were "dangerous" and "un-American" while attacking the Family Heritage Alliance for saying that the safest place for a child is a married home with a mother and a father.

State Rep. Erin Healy, a Democrat, even went as far as calling the Christian, pro-values organization an "extremist group" in a tweet posted Monday, the Daily Caller reported.

Clown world: Richard Dawkins vows 'I'll use every one' after scientists condemn words including 'male' and 'female'

Project that called for phasing out of non-inclusive language deserves contemptuous ridicule, says eminent biologist

Richard Dawkins has vowed to "use every one of the prohibited words" that scientists have called to be phased out because they are no longer inclusive.

On Tuesday, academics working in ecology and evolutionary biology called for the avoidance of words such as male, female, man, woman, mother, father, alien, invasive, exotic and race. Instead, they encouraged the use of terms such as "sperm-producing" or "egg producing" or "XY/XX individual" to avoid "emphasising hetero-normative views".

But Prof Dawkins, the eminent evolutionary biologist and author of The Selfish Gene and the God Delusion branded the suggestions ridiculous.

Moldova briefly shuts airspace after report of balloon-like object close to border with Ukraine

Moldova briefly closed its air space on Tuesday to investigate reports of a balloon-like object in the sky, a day after the small east European country accused Russia of plotting to bring down its government.

Comment: The government fell apart, probably in large part because 59% of its citizens believe it was being controlled by Western forces.

Russia denied the accusation by President Maia Sandu, who has repeatedly expressed concern about Russia's intentions towards the former Soviet republic since Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

Moldova's civil aviation authority said it acted after receiving a defence ministry report that a small object resembling a weather balloon had been seen over the north of the country, close to the border with Ukraine.

Comment: Russia's mentioned first but the object was spotted on its border with Ukraine...

Close encounters over Britain: Pilots reported seven near misses with 'unidentified floating objects' in UK air space last year

UFO UK Britain
UK Airprox Board (UKAB) data revealed a catalogue of near-misses last year
It came after the United States shot down a Chinese spy balloon and other UFOs
Planes flying over Britain had at least seven near misses with objects that could have been balloons last year, an analysis has found.

Pilots at the controls of multiple aircraft reported seeing objects that they believed could have been balloons or drones at altitudes between 1,800 and 34,000 feet.

The data obtained from the UK Airprox Board (UKAB), which records near misses in British airspace, revealed some items came as close as 10 metres away from the aircraft in question.

Comment: If some of these items are simply 'floating' then surely the aircraft came too close to them?

Comment: With this sudden surge of sightings, one gets the impression that there are a variety of agendas afoot, some of which are contrived by the establishment with the intention to drive an obvious agenda - such as to demonise China; to distract from Nord Stream - but it also seems that some of these reports, aspects of which remain largely unexplained for the time being, may be part of another narrative that, as of yet, is not immediately apparent: See also: London airports order military-grade anti-drone equipment worth "several million"

Best of the Web: "Get the hell out of there" - Ohio's apocalyptic chemical disaster rages on

ohio train derailment toxic chemicals burning
The toxic chemicals released in the train derailment in Ohio pose a threat to the health and safety of local residents
Update (1300ET): During a press conference, the NTSB referenced a video from Salem, Ohio, about 20 miles from East Palestine which shows sparks and flames emitting from beneath the train. The apparent structural issue with the train was captured on a security camera when it was travelling through Salem. According to Michael Graham, board member on the NTSB, two videos they had obtained were indicative of mechanical issues attributed to the rail car axles which likely led to the derailment.

The second video obtained from when the train was passing through Salem was recorded by a processing plant nearby a hotbox detector which scans the temperature of the axles as trains pass by. According to Graham, the wayside defect detector reading resulted in an alarm alerting the crew of a mechanical issue shortly before the derailment in East Palestine. Consequently, that alert forced the train to execute an emergency brake application which may have been the cause of the derailment. Presently, the NTSB is reviewing the trains data and audio recordings in order to examine the cause of the derailment and which hotbox detector indicated a mechanical error preceding the accident. The NTSB is expected to issue a preliminary report on its findings within 30 days.
