Best of the Web: Hayek, Orwell, and "the end of truth"

orwell 1984 graphic industrial grunge
Even in free societies, "the most intelligent and independent people cannot entirely escape [the] influence" of state propaganda.

In 1942, after fighting in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1937), a disillusioned writer returned to London to write about his experience. It wasn't just that the fascists in Spain had won and his side — a small, anti-Stalinist Marxist group — had lost. What frightened him was the ease with which truth itself had been erased and replaced by propaganda.
I saw great battles reported where there had been no fighting, and complete silence where hundreds of men had been killed. I saw troops who had fought bravely denounced as cowards and traitors, and others who had never seen a shot fired hailed as the heroes of imaginary victories...and I saw newspapers in London retailing these lies and eager intellectuals building emotional superstructures over events that had never happened.
The writer was George Orwell, and the quote appears in his book Looking Back on the Spanish War.

Latest polling paints dire picture for Israel in U.S. politics

pew poll report

Israel's plummeting popularity has been driven by the Gaza genocide and Iran war, but it has been building for decades. We are now finally seeing the political results.

One could be forgiven for having missed an important Pew poll that was released on the same day that the doomsday clock was counting down on Donald Trump's threat to destroy Iranian civilization. On April 7, the Pew Research Center released data on attitudes towards Israel in the U.S., and the numbers are devastating for the self-proclaimed Jewish state. What they reveal is a U.S. public increasingly aware that the myths spun over the last several decades justifying the U.S.- Israel relationship are false. And as these myths crumble, a significant political shift regarding official support for Israel is happening in centers of power in the U.S.

Replacement migration and the demographic challenge

Introduction: The Issues

This is an academic breakdown without comment. But it isn't good. International immigration was no accident post Covid, and neither will be working until we're 75. We've roughed out some simple graphics to go with this breakdown. Full report at bottom. —

The United Nations Population Division monitors fertility, mortality, and migration trends globally to produce official demographic estimates. Two dominant patterns are now visible in advanced economies: shrinking population sizes and rapid ageing. These twin dynamics raise the central question: can international migration offset the declines in working-age populations and maintain economic balance?
replacement box
The study defines replacement migration as "the international migration that would be needed to offset declines in population size, the declines in the population of working age, as well as to offset the overall ageing of a population".

When journalism becomes a crime: From Israel's war zones to Kash Patel's FBI

The Associated Press has surfaced yet another episode in the ongoing normalization of federal power being turned inward — this time aimed not at activists, whistleblowers, or dissidents, but at a reporter doing her job. According to the AP's account, The New York Times learned that the FBI opened an inquiry into whether Times reporter Elizabeth Williamson had violated "laws against stalking" after she published a February story examining the use of federal agents assigned to protect and chauffeur FBI Director Kash Patel's girlfriend, country singer Alexis Wilkins.

Let's pause on that. A reporter investigates the use of federal resources for personal benefit — a classic accountability story — and the response inside the nation's top law‑enforcement agency is to search federal databases for information on the journalist herself. The Times' executive editor called it "alarming," "unconstitutional," and "wrong." Those are unusually blunt words from an institution that rarely breaks decorum unless something has gone seriously off the rails.

Israelis are being recruited as spies for Iran in what security experts call an espionage 'epidemic'

Israel has long used the same playbook to recruit informants from enemy societies. Iran is now using it to recruit spies in Israel by exploiting new cracks in Israeli society.

On Sunday, Israeli prosecutors charged two Israeli citizens with espionage for Iran — 19-year-old Sagi Haik, who had been in contact with an Iranian handler for months through Telegram, and 21-year-old Asaf Shitrit, who was allegedly recruited by Haik to carry out tasks under Iranian direction. The months-long contact included plans for the two men to travel to an Arab country for "training," while the younger suspect allegedly told Israeli authorities that he had given "fake intelligence" to his Iranian handler in the form of a forged document detailing plans for a U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran. Prosecutors warned that if the allegedly fake document had reached Tehran, it could have triggered a preemptive Iranian attack.

It was the latest entry in what Israeli security commentators now describe as a "magefa" — an epidemic. Since October 2023, over 50 indictments have been filed against Israeli citizens for spying on behalf of Iran. In 2025, Israel's internal security agency, the Shin Bet, reported a 400% increase in Iranian recruitment attempts compared to the previous year, which itself had seen an unprecedented surge.

Russian Federation: Black rain, toxic air and bird deaths as Russian Black Sea town reels from refinery strike

Tuapse oil refinery in flames after drone strike hits Russia's Black Sea port

Air thick with toxic fumes. A column of smoke visible from space. Black rain falling from the sky. The scene in Tuapse, a resort town of about 60,000 people on Russia's Black Sea coast, has turned apocalyptic in recent days after Ukrainian strikes on a local oil refinery sparked major fires and spilled oil into the surrounding environment.

Located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Sochi, Tuapse is home to a Rosneft-owned refinery that processes around 12 million metric tons of crude annually and serves as a key export route for naphtha, fuel oil and diesel. The refinery was last struck on Monday, setting off a major fire and spilling petroleum products into the Black Sea and the Tuapse River.

Since then, residents say they have seen widespread "black rain," smelled burning and observed mass bird deaths. Many say oily black droplets have appeared on their clothes and skin after spending time outdoors. On Thursday, three days after the fire began, officials urged people to keep their windows closed and limit time outside as polluted smoke continued to spread.

New Jersey Rep. Tom Kean Jr. has mysteriously been missing from Capitol Hill for nearly two months — and his team is blaming unspecified "health issues."

Kean (R-NJ), who is the most vulnerable Republicans in the Garden State's congressional delegation, last voted on March 5 and has skipped more than four dozen votes since then.

On Wednesday, Kean posted on social media about how two of his bills advanced past committee. Yet he wasn't actually on Capitol Hill that day for votes.

The Post contacted his office for comment.

Kean's team told Politico that he is "facing unspecified health issues," but even fellow NJ House members said they haven't heard from the 57-year-old.

Comment: Perhaps some Congressional members actually took the clot shot?

The Pope's true loyalty is to globalism, not Christianity

Pope Leo XIV
Pope Leo XIV
They used to call it the "new world order" - A partially public and partially covert agenda to dismantle western civilization. Its purpose is to upend the global financial system, destroy liberty minded movements and eventually erase nations and borders to produce a single communist-like central government ruled by the elitist class.

Today, there are many names for this "beast system". Some call it the "multipolar world order" even though it would not actually be multipolar. Others call it the "Great Reset". But the NWO concept that has been promoted most in our post-pandemic discourse is the idea of "Multiculturalism".

Multiculturalism has always been in the background, at least since the Obama years. It was right under the surface, waiting to be used as a vehicle to move the globalist vision forward. The American people have been prepped for it for generations. The Europeans are currently suffocating in it and it might be too late for them.

The strategy seems rather simple but it is actually a complex effort relying on numerous moving parts synchronized to maximum effect. The most important mechanism is narrative and social influence; the public has to be taught to accept multiculturalism as an inevitability. This brings us to the modern church and its abandonment of western values.

How Iran war has triggered soaring cost of medicines

- Pharmacists in some countries have seen the cost of painkillers more than quadruple.
- The United States and Israel's war on Iran has pushed up the price of nearly everything.
- In the early days of the war, the global supply of oil, gas and fertilizers was the main focus of this crisis.

In recent days, however, pharmacists have also noted a spike in the price of medicines and contraceptives like condoms, as a result of the war. In the United Kindom, for example, pharmacies are charging 20 to 30 percent more for over-the-counter medicines, and the common painkiller paracetamol has more than quadrupled in price. In India, chemists are reporting price rises of common painkillers of as much as 96 percent.

We break down the reason behind the rise in prices and how badly countries around the world will be affected:

Why has the price of medicines increased?

Since the early days of the war, Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 percent of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies are shipped in peacetime. Experts say this has also disrupted pharmaceutical supply chains, which are reliant on the oil supply.

Comment: Considering the chain of production reaches back to basic ingredients from near or far locations, the choke points of any global disruption leaves pharmaceutical companies in limbo and production quotas unmet, neither cost-effective to the producer nor the public.
