French horse owner surprises animal attackers in the night

Horse owners are increasingly worried about how to protect their animals from the attacks.
Horse owners are increasingly worried about how to protect their animals from the attacks.
The horse owner scared away two individuals armed with knives on his property, after they had already stabbed a horse. This comes following at least 15 other macabre horse attacks in France this year.

The horse owner was alerted to the unexpected visitors on the night of August 24, after his dog's barking woke him.

He managed to scare away the armed attackers on his property in Montholon (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté), but only after they had already stabbed a horse multiple times.

The wounds suffered by the horse were skin deep, and it will survive the attack.

DOJ asks for COVID-19 data from Gov. Whitmer in response to nursing homes

© Alvaro Calvo/Getty ImagesHUESCA, SPAIN - APRIL 27: Alicia, a care worker holds the hands of a patient on April 27, 2020 in Grañen, Huesca, Spain. The care workers at the Los Monegros nursing home in Grañén left after being confined in the center for nearly a month. Since March 30 they decided to remain with their residents to avoid the spread of Covid-19 infection.
The Justice Department requested coronavirus data from the governors of states which issued orders which may have resulted in the deaths of thousands of elderly nursing home patients.

Michigan is one of the states the DOJ is asking for information from.

New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan all required nursing homes to admit COVID-19 patients to their vulnerable populations, without adequate testing according to the Department of Justice.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer released the following statement:
"Protecting the health, safety, and wellbeing of our seniors and most vulnerable residents has been a top priority throughout this crisis. The fact that this letter was sent during the middle of the Republican National Convention week to four Democratic governors should make it crystal clear that this is nothing more than election year politics by an administration that is more concerned with the president's re-election campaign than protecting Michigan seniors. We will review this letter and respond as appropriate, however, Americans would all be better served if the Trump administration stopped the partisan games and focused on delivering a real plan to defeat COVID-19."

Best of the Web: German doctors on COVID-19: "We have a lot of evidence that it's a fake story all over the world"

german doctors covid
Is this article 'fake news?' No, because the statement in the title that reads "we have a lot of evidence that it's a fake story all over the world" is an actual quote from a representative of the group discussed in the article. The statement was said. Whether or not what the quote says is true, on the other hand, is up for you to decide or according to multiple governments, is up for the World Health Organization (WHO) to decide. Is the title misleading or inaccurate? No, again, it's a direct quote and represents the opinion of multiple health professionals. Are these health professionals implying that COVID-19 is a fake virus? No, they are simply implying that it's not as dangerous as it's being made out to be, and I summarize some of that information below that has them coming to that conclusion.

These doctors and scientists are being heavily censored across all social media platforms, and those who write about them are experiencing the same. Many of the claims these doctors make have been 'debunked' by mainstream media, federal health regulatory agencies and 'fact-checkers' that are patrolling the internet. Any information that does not come from the (WHO) is not considered reliable, truthful or accurate, and that would include the information presented in this article and information shared by these experts in the field. People are being encouraged to visit the WHO's website for real and accurate information about COVID-19 instead of listening to doctors and scientists who oppose the narrative of these health authorities.

What Happened: More than 500 German doctors & scientists have signed on as representatives of an organization called "Außerparlamentarischer Corona Untersuchungsausschuss." Außerparlamentarischer Corona Untersuchungsausschuss stands for the "Corona Extra-Parliamentary Inquiry Committee and was established to investigate all things that pertain to the new coronavirus such as the severity of the virus, and whether or not the actions taken by governments around the world, and in this case the German government, are justified and not causing more harm than good.

At least two killed, one injured in shooting on third night of rioting in Kenosha, Wisconsin - UPDATE: Suspect arrested and charged

Two people are dead and a third is injured after a shooting Tuesday in Kenosha, Wis. where unrest and rioting continued to plague the city for a third night after police shot Jacob Blake, a black man, on Sunday in front of his children.

One person was shot in the head and another in the chest, Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. While no arrests have been made, Beth said authorities have been able to identify at least one person involved using social media footage of the incident.

The sheriff's office is investigating whether the shooting stemmed from a conflict between protestors and a group of men with weapons who were protecting businesses, Beth told the New York Times.

Comment: A 17-year-old suspect has been arrested and charged for the two killings:
An Illinois teen has been charged with first-degree murder over the shooting of three protesters - two fatal - amid the ongoing riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Alleged militia member Kyle Rittenhouse was arrested in his home state.

Rittenhouse was accused of fleeing Wisconsin "with intent to avoid prosecution" for the shooting. A public defender has been assigned to Rittenhouse's case.

Rittenhouse is described as a "fugitive from justice" in public court documents obtained by the Daily Dot.

While two people were fatally shot during the third night of violent rioting in Kenosha, a third victim was hospitalized with injuries that are believed to be non-life-threatening. However, the exact circumstances of the shootings remain murky.

Some witnesses insisted Rittenhouse was a white supremacist supporter of the pro-police 'Blue Lives Matter' movement, while others claimed he was simply there to protect property from rioters.
During the night, armed individuals took up positions around the city to protect buildings and businesses:

Anti-Trump Twitter unwokes itself to go after Melania for being an immigrant and a woman following RNC speech

Anti-Republican partisans online appeared to abandon any pro-women and pro-immigrant rhetoric to mock Melania Trump's accent, appearance and even to doubt her visa following the first lady's RNC speech.

In her address at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday, Melania urged to "stop the violence" at the ongoing anti-racism protests, and expressed her sympathies for Americans hurt by the coronavirus pandemic.

The speech's substance was largely ignored by some Twitter users, who went on to ridicule the first lady for being an immigrant from Slovenia.

The criticism of Melania often came down to her having a noticeable accent. "She still can't speak English," tweeted actress Bette Midler during the speech.

Indiana teachers shot by plastic pellets during training drill sue sheriff's department

Eight elementary school teachers in Indiana who were shot with airsoft guns "execution style" during an active shooter training drill last year are suing the sheriff's department that conducted the training.

The controversial training drill last year, conducted at Meadowlawn Elementary School in Monticello, north of Lafayette, became national news after teachers reported being left bruised, bloodied and traumatized.

The lawsuit, filed last week in Indiana's northern federal court, claims that four White County Sheriff's Deputies subjected teachers to "verbal threats, expletives, and screaming," in addition to striking them with the plastic pellets fired from airsoft guns.

"The teachers displayed obvious signs of anguish and physical pain, but were humiliated to find the law enforcement officers joking and laughing at them," the complaint reads. "The terrifying and inexplicable experience left the teachers with lasting physical and emotional injuries."

Police in Wisconsin shoot Black man in back multiple times, sparking protests - Updates

A large crowd of protesters gathered following the police shooting of a Black man in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Sunday. He was identified by Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers as Jacob Blake. The county declared a state of emergency overnight curfew, according to CBS Milwaukee affiliate WDJT-TV.

The man was transported to the hospital in serious condition, according to police. His father said on Facebook that his son is alive and in stable condition. Family friend Daniel Poneman tweeted that Blake is out of surgery, in the ICU and is "expected to make it."

Graphic video that purportedly shows the shooting began circulating on social media. The video, which appears to have been taken from across the street, shows the man walking around an SUV as police yell at him with weapons drawn, with one officer closely following him. As the man opens the driver-side door of the vehicle, the officer grabs the back of the man's shirt and appears to fire several shots into the mans back. At least seven shots are heard in the video, but it was unclear how many officers fired.

Riots & looting in Kenosha, Wisconsin as police reportedly shoot black man in the back SEVEN TIMES
24 Aug, 2020 05:10

People attacked a courthouse and threw Molotov cocktails at officers in Wisconsin after a viral video of yet another police shooting of a black man sparked heated protests.

Rioters broke into the local courthouse and started a fire on the ground floor, as looting was reported in the area.

A clip circulating on social media shows an angry crowd surrounding a patrol car. A Molotov cocktail was thrown at the officers. A few seconds later one officer was seen suddenly falling to the ground, while a bystander said that he "just got bricked."

Rallies were held on the streets with protesters chanting "No justice, no piece." People demonstrated outside the Kenosha County Public Safety Building despite a curfew that was imposed until 7am on Monday.

Local media reported that people were smashing the windows of parked police cars.

Public anger was sparked by a police-involved shooting on Sunday night. The chilling video that quickly went viral shows a black man walking towards an SUV followed by two officers, when one of them opened fire at the man as he opened the car door. According to reports, at least seven shots were fired.

Police said they were responding to a "domestic incident," without giving any additional details.

The victim, Jacob Blake, 29, was airlifted to a hospital in Milwaukee. A man claiming to be his friend wrote on social media that Blake was "out of surgery and in the ICU."

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers compared the shooting of Blake to the death of George Floyd and other black Americans who were killed in altercations with police.

"While we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is that he is not the first black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement," Evers stated.

The rioting and violence has escalated quickly with armed protesters face offing against police.

RT reports that Jacob Blake had a criminal record:

Video of the incident triggered a wave of public anger in Kenosha, which fueled a night of rioting. US mainstream media covered the shooting as the latest example of reckless police brutality targeting African Americans.

The reporting however seemed to avoid Blake's apparent criminal record. Wisconsin Circuit Court lists a man with the same name, age and address as the subject of an active arrest warrant, with three charges relating to domestic abuse, including 3rd degree sexual assault.

Blake criminal record
A 2015 article in the local press describes an incident in a Kenosha bar, during which an intoxicated 24-year-old man by the name Jacob Blake drew a gun during a quarrel with another patron. When police later stopped Blake's car, he resisted arrest and was injured by a police dog.

Neither piece of information justifies the shooting, contrary to what some commenters on Twitter have proclaimed. But those facts may be relevant in explaining what happened with Blake on Sunday night. Mainstream media articles have largely avoided mentioning those details, however.

There is a sentiment shared by many supporters of Black Lives Matter protests that bringing up a black person's criminal record is a dirty right-wing trick, only carried out by apologists for police brutality.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) said in a statement that the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

In further developments, the National Guard has been called to Kenosha.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers has announced that scores of National Guard troops will be deployed to the city of Kenosha by Monday evening as violent riots continue over the police shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake seven times.

"This is a limited mobilization of the National Guard focused on supporting the needs of local first responders to protect critical infrastructure, such as utilities and fire stations, and to ensure Kenoshians are able to assemble safely," Evers said.

----------------------------------------------------

New footage from moments before Blake was shot has emerged showing him fighting with the police who were trying to restrain him. Blake also had open arrest warrants for sexual assault and domestic violence, however, it is unknown if the police were trying to apprehend him for that reason. Witnesses also say the police attempted to use a taser on Blake prior to the shooting.

Kenosha Police issued this statement to CNN:
"As always, the video currently circulating does not capture all the intricacies of a highly dynamic incident. We ask that you withhold from passing judgment until all the facts are known and released."

Treasury imposes sanctions on Chinese national over fentanyl trafficking

Zhang Taotao
© US Treasury DepartmentAn image released by the US Treasury Department identifying Chinese national Zhang Taotao and his drug network.
The Treasury Department on Tuesday imposed sanctions on a Chinese national over allegations of trafficking fentanyl into the U.S.

The department said in a statement that chemist and chemical supplier Taotao Zhang shipped illegal synthetic opioids into the U.S. The Treasury also blacklisted Hong Kong-based Allyrise Technology Group Co., of which Zhang is director, alleging it was a front for his transactions.

The measures imposed a freeze on the U.S. assets of Zhang and the Hong Kong company while barring Americans from doing business with them.

U.S. intelligence says China is the primary source for illicit fentanyl entering the country. President Trump has targeted Chinese President Xi Jinping in accusations that Beijing has failed to meet promises to stop the flow of the drug into the U.S., which the Communist government denies.

"The United States remains committed to protecting vulnerable Americans by targeting individuals peddling this deadly drug," Treasury Deputy Secretary Justin Muzinich said.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a separate statement that the U.S. seeks continued cooperation with China to end the supply chain threat, calling on Beijing to "regulate its chemical industry and reduce the diversion of precursors into the international black market."

Money for 'dead souls': Echoing the Gogol-era, Russia's pension fund pays out billions of rubles to deceased citizens every year

© Getty Images/ArtemSam
What would Nikolai Gogol make of this? The Pension Fund of Russia is paying out billions of rubles in pensions to the dead, enabling their relatives to withdraw and use the funds, according to the National Accounting Chamber.

In the famous 19th century novel, chronicling the wanderings of Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov, the plot relies on "dead souls" (or deceased serfs) which are still accounted for in property registers. Now almost two centuries on, something similar continues in modern Russia.

The Chamber revealed that the pension fund is often late to receive notice of a citizen's death, leading to payments still being made. Some relatives are then able to withdraw the money, and spend the wrongly-awarded cash.

The audit for 2017-2019 revealed that it had overpaid 377 million rubles ($5 million) in just two regions of Russia - each region in the country has it's own branch, and there are 85 in total.

Al Gore isn't sure Trump would concede election to Biden, because orange man bad

Al Gore
© Reuters/Edited by The Daily Beast
When Al Gore won the popular vote by more than half a million, but lost the Supreme Court vote by 5 to 4, he gracefully conceded the 2000 election to George W. Bush — something Donald Trump would apparently be loath to do this time around even if Joe Biden beats him decisively in both the Electoral College and raw ballots on November 3.

Gore insisted Tuesday — in an online interview with Reuters Editor in Chief Stephen J. Adler, introduced by Reuters Editor at Large Sir Harold Evans — that he's had no second thoughts about his concession speech two decades ago because there was zero alternative.

"When you say there were potentially some other moves," he told Adler, "I researched them, and it turns out there's no intermediate step between a final Supreme Court decision and violent revolution."

But what if Trump declares the results illegitimate, Adler asked, and demands to stay on as president? Or does Gore believe the former reality star would concede defeat in the same spirit that he did?

"I don't know," Bill Clinton's former vice president — these days a fit-looking, silver-haired 72-year-old mega-millionaire — answered with a mirthless chuckle. "But it's important to say that it's really not up to him. I hear people saying, 'Well, would he accept that decision?' Well, it doesn't matter because it's not up to him. Because at noon on January 20th, if a new president is elected... the police force, the Secret Service, the military, all of the executive branch officers, will respond to the command and the direction of the new president."
