Meteor fireball streaks across sky over New England

A fireball shot across the night sky over New England on Friday.

It occurred around 11:15 p.m., according to the American Meteor Society (AMS).

The AMS received 85 reports about the bright meteor spotted over Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. It was also seen in New Jersey and New York, as well as Canada.

The event dazzled people across the region, with Sarah C., from Cumberland, Maine, saying it left her speechless.

"Never seen anything like it," she reported to the AMS. "Reminded me of a shooting star but much faster and much brighter."

This stunning Perseid fireball was recorded over Spain on 2021 July 31, at 23:18h local time. It was produced by a fragment (a meteoroid) from Comet Swift-Tuttle that impacted the atmosphere at about 210.000 km/h. The fireball began at a height of about 139 km and ended at an altitude of around 81 km above the ground level. The event was recorded in the framework of the SMART project, operated by the Southwestern Europe Meteor Network (SWEMN), from the meteor-observing stations located at La Hita (Toledo), La Sagra (Granada), Sevilla, and Madrid (Dr. Jaime Izquierdo, Complutense University of Madrid). The event has been analyzed by the principal investigator of the SMART project: Dr. Jose M. Madiedo, from the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC).

A bright spark and loud boom within Penang's airspace startled many early risers on a Wednesday morning, who were puzzled by an object apparently falling from the sky.

Those living in the southwest district of Sg Ara thought that it was a blast from the nearby quarry site, and others questioned if it was remnants of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' rocket launch to space.

It is possible that it is rubbish falling from the International Space Station, which is usually left to burn up in the earth's atmosphere.

Astronomy enthusiast Lim Choon Kiat, 49, was keeping watch at the time, taking pictures of the night sky, but missed the event by two minutes.

Two of Roebourne's finest have been left gobsmacked after their night on the beat was interrupted by a meteor.

Police bodycam vision captured the fireball lighting up the Pilbara sky, shocking the officers who were talking with a local at the time.

"Did you see that, did you see that?" says one.

"Oh wow! That was a big flash I thought that was a torch. Make a wish, quick, make a wish," says a female officer who has her back turned when the meteor first lights up the sky.

North Texas residents took to social media Sunday night to discuss and share videos of a flash streaking across the sky.

Many people across Dallas-Fort Worth noted they saw a brilliant fireball about 8:57 p.m. Sunday. In fact, it was seen as far south as Austin, as far north as Oklahoma and as far east as Louisiana.

It streaked from the southwest to the northeast and exploded, evidently over Northeast Texas. One resident in Bonham said it "shook his house."

On 24 July 2021, at about 0:00 h local time, a slow-moving fireball was spotted over Spain. This bolide was generated by a rock from an asteroid that hit the atmosphere at about 75,000 km/h. The fireball overflew the provinces of Ciudad Real (region of Castilla-La Mancha) and Jaén (Andalusia). It began over the south of Ciudad Real at an altitude of about 85 km, and ended over the province of Jaén at a height of around 34 km.
