Two women who claimed French first lady Brigitte Macron is transgender and was born 'Jean-Michel' go on trial in defamation case weeks before general election

brigitte
The trial against two women who made false claims that France's first lady Brigitte Macron was transgender, sparking conspiracy theories among the far-right, opened on Wednesday.

The wife of president Emmanuel Macron sued self-proclaimed spiritual medium Amandine Roy and conspiracy theorist Natacha Rey for posting a four-hour long video to YouTube claiming that she had once been a man named 'Jean-Michel', which went viral weeks before the 2022 presidential election.

The defamation case began as Macron and his Renaissance party scramble to prepare for the snap election that was called following a massive victory for the far-right during the European Parliament elections earlier this month.

Comment: The defamation case is not to prove whether Brigitte Macron is a man or not, it is to rule whether Rey allegedly falsified documents, so if Macron and her brother win the case, it doesn't mean a fat lot. See also:

Hungary's Orban says EU president Von der Leyen must go

The European Commission president has overseen the worst five years in the bloc's history, according to Hungary's prime minister

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has called for Ursula von der Leyen to be replaced as president of the European Commission, describing the five years of her tenure as the "worst" in the history of the EU.

He told reporters from the German media group Funke on Sunday that the EU's green transition had gone against the economic and industrial interests of the bloc, while its migration package had also proven entirely unsuccessful.

"The past five years have been perhaps the worst five years in the history of the EU. The successes of the European Commission and the Brussels elite are weak," Orban said. The EU needs efficient leadership and there are "plenty" of talented politicians "capable of doing this job," the Hungarian prime minister said. He claimed that the results of the recent European Parliament elections had also shown that people want change in Brussels.

IDF report found multiple cases of friendly fire deaths on Oct 7

A review by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) set to be released this summer will conclude that Israeli soldiers killed many of their own people on October 7, Israeli media reported. The inquiry is expected to identify multiple failures of the IDF during the Hamas rampage in southern Israel.

According to Israel's Channel 12 News, the IDF report due to be released in mid-July found "many casualties due to our forces firing on our forces." Tel Aviv has been accused of ordering its soldiers to kill hostages rather than allow Hamas to use them in negotiations, a policy long known as the 'Hannibal Directive.'

The IDF's October 7 review appears to point to incompetence rather than the intentional killing of its own civilians. However, Israeli outlet Ynet's investigation of the IDF's conduct found Tel Aviv had ordered troops to follow the Hannibal policy.

Still, the conclusions from the forthcoming report will amount to an official admission that scores, if not more, of Israelis were killed by IDF soldiers, not Hamas.

Comment: Israel killed Israelis 'to save them'? Israel killed Israelis to blame Hamas.

British government invents phantom Skripals to refuse to testify in the Novichok inquiry

A new lawyer appeared in a London court on Friday claiming to represent Sergei (lead image, left) and Yulia Skripal. Jack Holborn, a barrister specializing in what he calls human rights, told Lord Anthony Hughes, who is conducting a public inquiry into the alleged Novichok death of Dawn Sturgess in 2018, that the Skripals should not be called to give evidence or testify in the case.

Holborn claimed the Skripals are fearful for their security. "No security measures are perfect", he said.

Holborn has not been in contact with the Skripals, however. He refuses to answer questions put to him on what visual contact or other communications he has had with either Sergei or Yulia Skripal.

Instead, he was told what to say at the hearing by the law firm of Kingsley Napley which the British government is paying to show that the Skripals are participating in the Novichok case.

The spokesman for Hughes and the inquiry was asked to explain Holborn's presence in court for the first time on Friday. She was also asked what authority the Skripals had given Holborn to represent them. The spokesman answered:
"Kingsley Napley has been designated as the recognised legal representative of the Skripals under r[ule] 6 of the Inquiry Rules 2006. By rule 8, the recognised legal representative may appoint a team to assist them and Kingsley Napley have accordingly instructed counsel to appear on their clients' behalf."
In other words, there has been no contact between the lawyers who say they represent the Skripals, and the Skripals themselves. The judge and government are refusing to give evidence that Sergei Skripal is alive, and that Yulia Skripal is not in prison.

Putin's 'war' to re-shape the American Zeitgeist

Nuclear Carrying Vehicle

The G7 and the subsequent Swiss 'Bürgenstock Conference' can - in retrospect - be understood as preparation for a prolonged Ukraine war. The three centrepiece announcements emerging from the G7 - the 10 year Ukraine security pact; the $50 'billion Ukraine loan'; and the seizing of interest on Russian frozen funds - make the point. The war is about to escalate.

These stances were intended as preparation of the western public ahead of events. And in case of any doubts, the blistering belligerency towards Russia emerging from the European election leaders was plain enough: They sought to convey a clear impression of Europe preparing for war.

What then lies ahead? According to White House Spokesman John Kirby: "Washington's position on Kiev is "absolutely clear":

"First, they've got to win this war".

"They gotta win the war first. So, number one: We're doing everything we can to make sure they can do that. Then when the war's over ... Washington will assist in building up Ukraine's military industrial base".

If that was not plain, the U.S. intent to prolong and take the war deep into Russia was underlined by National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan: "Authorization for Ukrainian use of American weapons for cross-border attacks extends to anywhere [from which] Russian forces are coming across the border". He affirmed, too, that Ukraine can use F-16s to attack Russia and use U.S. supplied air defence systems "to take down Russian planes - even if in Russian airspace - if they're about to fire into Ukrainian airspace".

Ukrainian pilots have the latitude to judge 'the intent' of Russian fighter aircraft? Expect the parameters of this 'authorisation' to widen quickly - deeper to air bases from which Russian fighter bombers launch.

Understanding that the war is about to transform radically - and extremely dangerously - President Putin (in his speech to the Foreign Ministry Board) detailed just how the world had arrived at this pivotal juncture - one which could extend to nuclear exchanges.

The gravity of the situation itself demanded the making of one 'last chance' offer to the West, which Putin emphatically said was "no temporary ceasefire for Kiev to prepare a new offensive; nor was it about freezing the conflict"; but rather, his proposals were about the war's final completion.

"If, as before, Kiev and western capitals refuse it - then at the end, that's their business", Putin said.

Just to be clear, Putin almost certainly never expected the proposals to be received in the West other than by the scorn and derision with which they, in fact, were met. Nor would Putin trust - for a moment - the West not to renege on an agreement, were some arrangement to be reached on these lines.

If so, why then did President Putin make such a proposal last weekend, if the West cannot be trusted and its reaction was so predictable?

Terrorist attacks in southern Russia: What we know so far

Militants have targeted synagogues, churches, and the police in the Russian region of Dagestan

The southern Russian region of Dagestan was rocked on Sunday by a series of deadly attacks in two major cities, which claimed the lives of multiple civilians and at least 15 police officers, as assailants deliberately targeted synagogues and Orthodox Christian churches.

Where it happened

Dagestan is one of several Muslim-majority regions in Russia's North Caucasus, which stretches along the coast of the Caspian Sea. The tragic scenes unfolded in the regional capital, Makhachkala, and Derbent, a large city 120km to the south.

Derbent attacks

During a raid on a Christian church in the city, militants brutally killed its archpriest, Father Nikolay Kotelnikov, security officials confirmed. The gunmen broke into the church on Pentecost Sunday after the evening service and reportedly slit the 66-year-old man's throat, after killing a guard.

The Derbent synagogue that came under attack had recently strengthened its security, with a police squad stationed outside and private security guards on the premises, according to the Russian Jewish Congress, a national religious organization.

Police and security personnel were the first to confront the gunmen and were killed by the attackers, who raided the synagogue around 40 minutes before an evening prayer. The terrorists then used firebombs to set the building on fire.

Comment: Was this attack another attempt to destabilize Russia from Inside?
Five militants were neutralized in the southern region, security forces reported on Monday

Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC) has released footage of its counterterrorism units at work throughout Sunday night and Monday morning, following a series of attacks that killed over a dozen people in the southern Russian region of Dagestan.

"Bomb disposal experts from the security agencies are working at the site where the clashes took place, and small arms and ammunition have been seized. The necessary operational and investigative measures are being carried out, as well as the search for the bandits' accomplices," the statement said.

In the NAC's published footage, armed and armored teams of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) are seen moving through the streets with gunshots ringing out in the background. The bloodied floor of the Orthodox church in the aftermath of the shooting, burned-out vehicles, and the smoldering remains of a building are also seen.

At least 15 members of law enforcement and several civilians were killed in the brutal attacks, the regional head, Sergey Melikov, has said. Three days of mourning have been declared in Dagestan following the attacks. All entertainment events on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday have been canceled, and flags will be flown at half-staff during the mourning period.

Gambling scandal claims UK PM Sunak's campaign chief

Risho Sunak
© AAP/Associated PressThe scandal is another misfortune for Rishi Sunak, who's sinking under a gaffe-ridden campaign.
The campaign chief for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservatives has stepped aside two weeks before an election after reports he and his candidate wife were being investigated for betting on the election date.

The rapidly escalating gambling scandal is the latest misfortune to unfold for Sunak, who is forecast to lose power on July 4 after a campaign characterised by gaffes that followed his surprise announcement of an early vote.

The Conservative Party confirmed that campaign director Tony Lee had taken a leave of absence.

The statement on Thursday followed news reports that the Gambling Commission was looking into allegations of improper betting by Lee and his wife Laura Saunders, a candidate for parliament in Bristol.

Comment: Does Sunak even want to be PM? Or his he just going through the motions so he can bail before things get really bad in the UK? It sure looks like it.

US sends USS Eisenhower to Med, USS Roosevelt to Middle East, amidst Israel's threat to launch war on Hezbollah in Lebanon

Aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) has departed the Red Sea while USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), currently in the Pacific, will leave for the Middle East to continue a U.S. presence mission in the region, USNI News has learned.

"[The] Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group departed the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility today and will remain briefly in the U.S. European Command area of responsibility before returning home after more than seven months deployed in support of U.S. regional deterrence and force protection efforts, reads a Saturday statement from Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder.

Comment: Interestingly, it was the Eisenhower which Yemen recently claimed to have hit in response to US-UK airstrikes on the country which killed children.

"Next week, the TR CSG will depart the Indo-Pacific for the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. The United States will continue to maintain a robust presence in the Indo-Pacific region to strengthen peace, stability, and deterrence alongside allies and partners."

Comment: Analyst Scott Ritter recently commented that, by not allowing the ships and its crew to have the rest needed, not only is the US showing that it's clearly overstretched, but in doing so it's putting its military in significant danger.

Although, given the escalations both in Ukraine and the Middle East, one gets the impression that the West and Israel are acting more out of rabid desperation rather than logic:

Beach in Crimea hit by Ukraine with US ATACMS, 5 dead, 124 injured - Russia says US 'primarily responsible'

Russia has claimed Ukraine struck Crimea using US-supplied missiles, killing at least five people including two children and injuring 124 more.

The Russian defence ministry said Kyiv on Sunday struck the city of Sevastopol in the Russia-occupied peninsula with Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) and deliberately targeted civilians.

Russia claims it shot down four missiles and one detonated in mid-air, before fragments fell near a beach on the north side of the city which was packed with holidaymakers.

Footage aired on Russian state television showed terrified people running from a beach, and others being carried away on sun loungers.

Comment: Some researchers are claiming that flight data shows a US drone in the area which may have been responsible for providing the location data of the missiles that hit the beach:
