Seoul says US, N. Korea in talks to set up 3rd Trump-Kim summit - NK denies secret talks

trump kim us north korea
North Korean and U.S. officials are holding "behind-the-scenes talks" to arrange a third summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on the fate of the North's expanding nuclear arsenal, South Korea's president said, four months after a second meeting between the leaders in Vietnam collapsed without any agreement.

There have been no public meetings between Washington and Pyongyang since the breakdown of the Vietnam summit. But the prospects for a resumption of U.S.-North Korea diplomacy have brightened since Trump and Kim recently exchanged personal letters. Trump called Kim's letter "beautiful" while Kim described Trump's as "excellent," though the contents of their letters have not been disclosed.

Trump was asked Wednesday as he departed for Asia if he would be meeting with Kim at the Group of 20 summit in Japan.

Trump said he wouldn't be meeting with Kim, but then added: "I may be speaking with him in a different forum. I will be going, as you know, to South Korea after the summit." He didn't elaborate.

In a response Tuesday to questions by The Associated Press and six other news agencies, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said that Trump's and Kim's "willingness to engage in dialogue has never faded" and that their recent letter exchanges prove that.

Comment: Kwon Jong Gun, a top official in the North Korean foreign ministry, denied that such "behind-the-scenes talks" have taken place.
Moon made the bold claim while speaking to several media agencies in Seoul on Wednesday. However a top official in NK's Foreign Ministry, Kwon Jong Gun, accused the president of lying "to refurbish their image" and give the impression that South Korea is "mediating" a nuclear deal.

"If we have anything to liaise with the US, it will be simply done through the liaison channel already under operation between the DPRK and the US, and the negotiation, if any, will be held face to face between the DPRK and the US," Kwon, director general of the Department of American Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, told state media on Thursday.

He added that no such engagement would "go through the South Korean authorities."
Meanwhile, the U.S. is subtly threatening to exclude South Korea from intelligence on the North ... because Huawei.
A thinly veiled threat that this could happen came from Randall Schriver, the US assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific security affairs. In an interview with South Korea's Dong-a Ilbo daily, the Pentagon official said the US "doesn't want to see a situation arise where we don't have confidence in sharing sensitive information with our ally."

Directly asked if the flow of intel on North Korea would stop over the Huawei row, he said: "We hope that situation doesn't come about."
...
Seoul has so far not moved to take any action against Huawei, leaving the decision of which equipment to use in a nationwide upgrade to 5G in the hands of its providers. One of its three major carriers, LG Uplus, chose Chinese base stations and transmitters, while two others bought hardware from Samsung Electronics, Ericsson, and Nokia.

South Korea, which sells about a quarter of its export goods to China, has previously felt how devastating Beijing's economic retaliation can be. After the previous Korean administration agreed in 2017 to host American THAAD anti-missile systems in defiance of Chinese objections, South Korean firms faced an unofficial boycott from China. The tourist industry alone lost US$6.7 billion over nine months, according to the South Korean government. Cosmetic firms, car makers, and TV drama producers were hit as well.

US military is a bigger polluter than as many as 140 countries - shrinking this war machine is a must

military trucks
© EPA/Mohammed MessaraEnvironmentalists should argue for going beyond simply 'greening' military infrastructure
The US military's carbon bootprint is enormous. Like corporate supply chains, it relies upon an extensive global network of container ships, trucks and cargo planes to supply its operations with everything from bombs to humanitarian aid and hydrocarbon fuels. Our new study calculated the contribution of this vast infrastructure to climate change.

Greenhouse gas emission accounting usually focuses on how much energy and fuel civilians use. But recent work, including our own, shows that the US military is one of the largest polluters in history, consuming more liquid fuels and emitting more climate-changing gases than most medium-sized countries. If the US military were a country, its fuel usage alone would make it the 47th largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, sitting between Peru and Portugal.

In 2017, the US military bought about 269,230 barrels of oil a day and emitted more than 25,000 kilotonnes of carbon dioxide by burning those fuels. The US Air Force purchased US$4.9 billion worth of fuel, and the navy US$2.8 billion, followed by the army at US$947m and the Marines at US$36m.

Scotland Yard has been forced to pay a total of more than £700,000 in compensation to 153 anti-fascist campaigners who were arrested by police during a demonstration and detained for up to 14 hours.

The campaigners had been detained while protesting against another demonstration led by the far-right activist Tommy Robinson.

The Met has paid the compensation, totalling £729,000, in out-of-court settlements after the campaigners took legal action alleging their detention was unlawful. The legal claims of another 28 campaigners have yet to be resolved.

Internal police documents seen by the Guardian show that two undercover officers spied on anti-fascist campaigners at the demonstration.

A protest by employees of discount furniture retailer Wayfair against the sale of beds to migrant detention centers has gone viral, forcing Twitter users to argue over the morality of supplying furniture to "concentration camps."

Wayfair workers, upset their demand that the company stop selling furniture to contractors supplying migrant detention camps was rebuffed by management, plan to stage a walkout at the company's Boston headquarters on Wednesday.

"This is what solidarity looks like - a reminder that everyday people have real power, as long as we're brave enough to use it," Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) tweeted, sending the employees' protest to the top of Twitter's trends list.

Vimeo bans media watchdog Project Veritas after it accused Google of anti-Trump bias

Vimeo has deleted the account of right-wing media transparency group Project Veritas just days after they published reports accusing Google of bias against conservatives and President Donald Trump.

A screenshot shared by Project Veritas on Wednesday appears to show that Vimeo removed the group's account from its platform, citing a violation of community guidelines.
You cannot upload videos that are hateful, defamatory, or discriminatory.
The group denied breaking any rules, saying that they have done "nothing" that fits the description.

The group's founder, James O'Keefe, pointed out that the incident with Vimeo happened several days after YouTube took down a video of their latest investigation, in which YouTube's owner, Google, was accused of harboring bias against conservatives and President Trump.
They keep citing 'privacy violations.' Being embarrassed by legitimate investigative journalism is not a 'privacy violation.'
Project Veritas is known for releasing internal documents and undercover videos they say expose liberal, left-wing bias in the media and tech companies.

Comment: For all the hysteria about Trump being a dictator, it Big Tech who are the intolerant totalitarians. Watch out, though, because saying so might be considered "hateful". Vimeo is no better than YouTube. They'll censor anything critical of Israel, for example.

Trump ready for temporary truce with China during G20

The U.S. and China have tentatively agreed to another truce in their trade war in order to resume talks aimed at resolving the dispute, sources familiar with the situation said.

Details of the agreement are being laid out in press releases in advance of the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump at the Group of 20 Leaders Summit in Osaka, Japan, this weekend, three sources - one in Beijing and two others in Washington - said.

Such an agreement would avert the next round of tariffs on an additional $300 billion of Chinese imports, which would extend punitive tariffs to virtually all of the country's shipments to the U.S. The Trump administration has threatened to slap duties of up to 25 percent on the remaining untaxed Chinese goods if this weekend's talks go poorly.

One source with knowledge of the planning said Trump's decision to delay additional tariffs was Xi's price for holding the meeting in Osaka.

"The reality, though, is President Trump could always have a change of heart," the source said. "But the truce cake seems to have been baked."

Neither the White House nor the Office of U.S. Trade Representative had any comment on the reports.

Trump: 'I Decided Not to Kill A Lot of Iranians...I Like Iranians So Much'

IranFlagTrump
© Real IranUS President Donald Trump
In response to a direct question -- "Are we going to have a war with Iran, Mr. President?" -- Donald Trump said he hopes not:

"Well, I hope we don't, but we're in a very strong position if something should happen, we're in a very strong position," President Trump told the Fox Business Channel's Maria Bartiromo on Wednesday.

"It wouldn't last very long, I can tell you that. It would not last very long. And I'm not talking boots on the ground. I'm not talking we're going to send a million soldiers. I'm just saying if something would happen, wouldn't last very long.

Comment: That's debatable. Iran's policy at the moment is to retaliate upon launch of an attack on Iran. That means the instant they detect American missiles headed their way, they will launch attacks on American targets (among others) in the region. And even if the Americans are able to take out a majority of Iranian weapons systems, the war will likely spread, for example, to Israel. See: Russia reinforces Iranian air defense, mobilizes advisers for support

Trump said he's been "very nice" to the Iranians:

"They shot down our drone, I decided not to kill a lot of Iranians. I know a lot of Iranians. I like Iranians so much. And that plays into the decision, too. They're human beings. They're people. I didn't want to kill 150 people when they shot down an unmanned drone, so I didn't do that."

Comment: The Trump-Bolton strategy isn't working, and it won't work. Sanctions and threats will not help. And the U.S. hasn't proven itself trustworthy in negotiations. So Khamenei is justified in saying the following:

And the U.S. can't count on a coalition of willing allies as they did when they invaded Iraq. For instance:
"We do not want our territory to be a staging post for any hostile action against any of our neighbors, including Iran," Iraq's President Barham Salih told CNN, noting that there is no agreement between Baghdad and Washington that could make Donald Trump think he can use it as such.

First Democratic primary debate: Trump calls it "boring," Tulsi Gabbard steals the show

first Democratic debate
© Reuters / Mike Segar
The first Democratic debate saw 10 largely-interchangeable candidates square off to trade platitudes in a free-for-all plagued with technical difficulties, mysterious shifts into Spanish, and belligerent posturing.

President Donald Trump didn't seem too worried about being unseated in 2020 by any of the ten candidates duking it out on the first night of the Democratic primary debates in Miami, leveling a characteristically acerbic tweet in lieu of detailed analysis. Others declared him the winner of the debate.

Republican senator Lindsey Graham gave a sarcastic thanks to NBC for the technical difficulties that forced the station to go to a commercial early, and even the left-leaning Daily Show poked fun at the forgettable showing of a large chunk of the candidates, showing them turning into, well, a large chunk. Of mayonnaise.

Comment: It seems that in a sea of npc mediocrity, it was very easy for Tulsi Gabbard to shine. Google, the social networks and the mainstream media will now have to go into overdrive to suppress Gabbard's visibility and message - because its obvious none of the other political hacks even come close to her. And we can't have an actual thinking leader that's against US wars of aggression in the White House now, can we!!

Some more on Gabbard's successful debate appearance. First this from Ryan Dawson:
Watching the Democrat debate/take turn interview, makes it clear why they lose. Everyone there played up a demographic niche and there were no real people. The first words out of some their mouths were qualifiers based on the "as-a" complex. It was rehearsed as heck. Trump will eat these disconnected robot people. There was one exception and that was Tulsi Gabbard. She was the only one who did any real debating. She was the only one to challenge a position that is promoted by the majority of both parties. She was the only one to outline an issue that is actually up to the president, foreign policy.

The rest of them were giving high sounding platitudes about healthcare and the environment, things that are up to the legislative branch where many of them already are and yet have done nothing about. The president does not dictate education or healthcare. The president does however act as Commander and Chief and can decide to waste trillions of dollars on military misadventures, something Democrats and Republicans are both guilty of supporting. Regardless of what domestic issues are of concern, the bottom line in the bottom line. How are you going to pay for them? You can either increase taxes, lower costs, or reduce spending. Ending the warfare for welfare state would both reduce spending and lower costs. No one but Tulsi suggested this. All anyone else had to say was horrible rhetoric about carbon taxes, and costly regulations, something the public can not stomach or stand for or afford. Dear Democrats, Stop Punishing the Working Class or you will lose again.

Tulsi sticks it to the chicken-hawk neocons

Tulsi explains basics of Afghanistan to a nobody loser. This reminded me of Ron Paul putting John McCain in his place.

Not surprisingly, the cast of MSNBC hipsters, comprised of Miss Russiagate conspiracy theorist Rachel Maddow, self righteous Chuck Todd and the jabronis, did not see it fit to ask about Internet censorship even right after Google was exposed in an undercover investigation of aiming to hack the elections. This is something mad dog Maddow accused the Russians of doing basically daily for the past couple years. It is very telling of the MSM that they simply ignored this huge story and threat to democracy.
The Drudge Report further showed that Gabbard had, of all the candidates, made the most favorable impression:
The Drudge Report political website posted a surprising instant poll showing that its visitors believed Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii was the overwhelming victor of the first Democratic presidential debate, polling at almost 35% with 12,314 votes.

Her closest competitor was Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who was polling at just under 13.5% and 4,791 votes. Julián Castro of Texas and Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey were polling the lowest with less than 5% each.

Drudge poll
Tulsi Gabbard also won the Washington Examiner poll. by a strikingly similar margin - 34.15% for the Hawaii congresswoman and 23.06% for Warren.
Tulsi Gabbard also won the Washington Examiner poll. by a strikingly similar margin - 34.15% for the Hawaii congresswoman and 23.06% for Warren.
Although unscientific, the two polls indicated that the Hawaii congresswoman, 38, who had attracted attention for her silver-streaked hair and denunciation of President Trump's "chicken hawk cabinet" had made a major impact on the nine-candidate stage.

An Iraq war veteran, she served in the Hawaii Army National Guard and was also deployed to Kuwait from 2008-2009. In her January 2019 campaign kickoff, Gabbard promised to end regime change wars and to only authorize war on direct enemies of the United States. In the debate, she promised to end America's wars, saying: "This insanity must end."

Gabbard's most famous international foray was to Syria in 2017. In Damascus for a "fact-finding" mission," she met Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, who stood accused of using chemical weapons against his own people during the country's civil war, killing hundreds.

In April 2017, she said she was "skeptical" the Assad regime was behind the attack and called for an investigation after the U.S. launched a missile strike in response. "Assad is not the enemy of the United States because Syria does not pose a direct threat to the United States," she said.

The second-youngest of the 25 candidates in the Democratic race, she is married to Abraham Williams, a cinematographer and surfer who is seven years her junior. She was previously married to Eduardo Tamayo, her childhood sweetheart, divorcing in 2006 after four years of wedlock.

Iran says US like farting lion in Persian fable, warns Arab countries facilitating US attacks

iran drone
STRIKE: Iran claims this is the drone it shot down with a missile
Iran has summoned the United Arab Emirates' chargé d'affaires in Tehran to protest that the UAE allowed the US to use its Al-Dhafra base in UAE to launch the Global Hawk surveillance drone (worth some $130 million) that was downed on the 20thof June by the Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps' (IRGC) air defence missile system. The Iranian message was clear: this is not a diplomatic gesture and complaint but a straight warning that any country hosting a US military base which allows a hostile military action against Iran will be considered under attack, along with the US base it is accommodating.

Iran is informing Arab countries that any US attack starting from any neighbouring or Middle Eastern country will be considered an act of war by the country itself, in the words of a high ranking IRGC officer. The IRGC - recently designated a terrorist organisation by the US State Department - is the force in charge of protecting the Strait of Hormuz, and is coordinating on a varying scale with the regular Army intending to stand against the US in case of war.

Online war between liberals and conservatives in US obscures real threat of government censorship

facebook
© REUTERS/Akhtar Soomro
With sudden suspensions and hasty banning sprees, social media giants are censoring more than ever. High-profile spats between liberals and conservatives often grab the spotlight - but that's the tip of the censorship iceberg.

Liberal rage mobs calling for provocative conservatives to be "cancelled" or "deplatformed" are loud - and they attract plenty of attention both on social media and across centrist and liberal-leaning mainstream media.

The simultaneous banishment of right-wing agitator Alex Jones from major platforms last year was a litmus test; a way to gauge whether such bans would be palatable to the mainstream. When few raised their voices to object, the corporations had their answer: It was going to be easy to push out similar voices - and they could probably even start to widen the net.

When Vox journalist Carlos Maza insisted that conservative YouTube host Steven Crowder be banned for using homophobic slurs against him, it made headlines. In their haste to comply with this and other demands from the outrage police, platforms have been concocting new 'rules' and 'guidelines' on the fly. The result has been that even the most innocuous accounts have found themselves caught up in the maelstrom. Incredibly, history teachers even had their YouTube channels suspended for "hate speech" because they published resources for students to learn about Nazi Germany.
