Obama suggests 'digital fingerprints' to counter misinformation 'so we know what's true and what's not true'

Obama says he's been target of 'deepfakes,' predicts next election cycle will be rife with false info

Former President Barack Obama suggested in a new interview the development of "digital fingerprints" to combat misinformation and distinguish between true and misleading news for consumers.

Obama sat down with his former White House senior adviser David Axelrod for a conversation on the latter's podcast, "The Axe Files," on CNN Audio. During the interview, Axelrod noted he's seen "misinformation, disinformation, [and] deepfakes" targeting Obama.

"As I've told people, because I was the first digital president when I left office, I was probably the most recorded, filmed, photographed human in history, which is kind of a weird thing," responded Obama. "But just the odds are that I was. As a consequence, there's a lot of raw material there."

The former president added that the deepfakes — digitally manipulated images, audio or video that appear legitimate — started with a version of him dancing, "saying dirty limericks" and similar kinds of activity.

Comment: Barry is a walking and talking deepfake. More of the public is seeing through him and his party's criminal lying and disastrous policies/ideologies everyday - and the Dems are desperate to maintain what semblance of power they have left to them.

Let NATO fight, Russia is prepared - Lavrov

The Western bloc has committed to fighting Russia in Ukraine, the foreign minister said.

Russia is prepared for NATO to continue to fight in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday. Several days earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg rejected any moves to "freeze" the conflict, despite mounting Ukrainian losses.

In an interview with Germany's Welt am Sonntag published on Sunday, Stoltenberg declared that "peace cannot mean freezing the conflict and accepting a deal that is dictated by Russia." Stoltenberg added that "only Ukraine can define the conditions that are acceptable," an explicit endorsement of Kiev's vow to drive Russian forces back to pre-conflict borders and seize the Russian territory of Crimea.

New Nord Stream blast aftermath footage released

Video footage published by multiple European news outlets shows that one of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines was severed cleanly, potentially with a small, shaped explosive charge. The recording was released amid a flurry of reports blaming Ukraine for the attack.

Filmed using a submersible drone by Norwegian firm Blueye, the footage was published on Wednesday by Germany's RTL, Denmark's TV2, and France's La Liberation. It shows one of the two Nord Stream 2 lines split neatly in two, with jagged metal the only sign that an explosion had taken place.

Footage of the Nord Stream 1 pipelines released last year showed greater damage, with at least 50 meters of pipe torn apart and a large gouge taken out of the seabed. Both Nord Stream 1 lines were destroyed, while only one Nord Stream 2 line was severed.

Update on the Russian triumph and spectacular success at SPIEF

SPIEF 2023
Yes, it was a triumph. If it was an opera, we would still be on our feet, clapping like crazy and shouting Bravo!

The mood was upbeat, celebratory and jubilant and the success was of Grand Slam nature! Congratulations Russia.

Here are a few sideline events:
  • Culture: The large installation of Gazprom showcased the traditions of the peoples from all Russian regions, their national costumes, cuisine, clothing, culture, and music. More than 400 musicians, artists, craftsmen, designers, lecturers and other representatives of the creative industries from 15 regions of the Russian North were involved in the preparation of the festival.
  • Russia aims to become one of top five global food exports by 2030. In recent years, Russia has increased its food exports to 160 countries. From 2013, before the first sanctions, agricultural exports increased by 2.5 times. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko reported this discussing Russia's contribution to ensuring global food security at the SPIEF. "Currently, we can say that the industry is developing not only within the framework of import substitution, but is also increasing its export potential," she said.
The Games: Goodbye to the Olympics shenanigans of the past years. The Friendship Games, the BRICS Games, and the Games of the Future tournament will be held in Russia. This was announced at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. A large-scale sporting program was organized as part of the SPIEF 2023, and agreements were signed to:
  • hold a forum on the interaction of sports and bookmakers;
  • hold the Summer Games of the Deaflympians "We are together. Sport" in Ufa.

Russian MP believes Ukrainian counteroffensive will end in July - Zelensky says operation is not going well

ukraine tank
Kiev's forces will exhaust their offensive capabilities in July if the current Ukrainian casualty rate persists, the head of Russia's State Duma Defense Committee, Andrey Kartapolov, said on Tuesday.

Ukrainian troops have lost some 900 soldiers to deaths and injuries over the past 24 hours alone, the colonel general explained. According to Kartapolov, they have also lost nine tanks and dozens of armored vehicles over the same period. "If it continues at this pace, I believe we will finish repelling [this offensive] in three weeks and move on to dynamic actions ourselves," the MP predicted in an appearance on the 'Solovyov Live' show.

The lawmaker claimed that Ukraine had already lost around 20,000 soldiers out of the 40,000 to 50,000 it had reportedly trained for the offensive. While he did not name his sources, he claimed the much-awaited Ukrainian operation had largely failed.

Comment: This forecast of course depends on the accuracy of these numbers.

"Every tactic they have used has not worked as of now," he said. Kiev's troops did not advance further than the Russian forward defense area security zone and did not even reach the first defense line, the MP added.

Comment: Zelensky admitted to the BBC that progress has been "slower than desired," but insisted that peace negotiations are still off the table:
"Some people believe this is a Hollywood movie and expect results now. It's not," he told the BBC on Wednesday ... "Whatever some might want, including attempts to pressure us, with all due respect, we will advance on the battlefield the way we deem best," he added.
Ukraine's deputy defense minister also made excuses (and vague promises):
Writing on Telegram, Anna Malyar acknowledged that "it is quite difficult" for Ukrainian troops to advance, because Moscow is fully committed to stopping Kiev's long-anticipated campaign. Ukraine's troops "must prepare for the fact that it will be a tough duel," she warned.

The official went on to argue that "it is not necessary to measure the result of the work of the defense forces only by settlements [captured] and kilometers traveled." Malyar insisted that aside from territorial gains, there are many other metrics to assess the effectiveness of a military operation, but declined to give any examples.

She claimed that Ukraine's ongoing military push is pursuing several goals, and vowed that "biggest blow is yet to come."
NATO's Stoltenberg also commented on Russia's "well-prepared" defense:
"We know that Ukrainians face a difficult terrain, they face dug-in Russian resistance," Stoltenberg said during a joint media engagement with Germany's defense minister Boris Pistorius in the city of Flensburg.

Russian troops had been able to "establish static, well-prepared defense lines with minefields, with Dragon's teeth, with tank trenches," the NATO chief admitted. He also said that the military bloc would send additional demining equipment, including "heavy-armored demining" vehicles, to help its troops breach these extensive defenses. He did not name either the number or the exact type of hardware, which is supposedly to be delivered by Germany, the US and other NATO members.a
The head of Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), Sergey Naryshkin, claims that Western intel agencies are worried that the counteroffensive could have unintended consequences:
The Russian spy chief claimed that "authoritative members of the US and European intelligence services and military departments don't rule out that the counteroffensive could lead to directly opposite results" of those expected by Ukraine.

Despite supporting the counteroffensive in their public statements, "behind the scenes, many Western military analysts express serious doubts about the success of the Ukrainian adventure," Naryshkin said during an interview with the outlet.

"Without going into details, I'll say that the tasks announced by the Kiev regime are assessed as unachievable" by foreign experts, he added.
...
The concern in Washington and Brussels is that the "death of a significant number of NATO-trained military personnel and destruction of equipment will undermine the combat capability of the Ukrainian army. This, in turn, will negatively affect the stability of the Zelensky regime," Naryshkin explained. He added that according to a number of Western assessments, Ukrainian statehood itself may be under threat because of the counteroffensive.

The head of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, Aleksey Danilov, claimed during a television appearance on Monday that the counteroffensive has been progressing in line with Kiev's schedule.

"Everything is going according to a plan, which had been approved and developed. There are no deviations from it," Danilov said, adding that only "a limited circle of people know" what this plan actually is.

Blackmail: NATO member Finland threatens African aid cuts over support for Russia

Finland euros
The Finnish government's approach is a classic case of coercive diplomacy, a South African politician has told RT

African countries that back Russia in the Ukraine conflict will lose development assistance from Finland, the country's foreign trade and development minister, Ville Tavio, said on Monday.

The new Finnish government led by Petteri Orpo is seeking to cut development aid by around $1 billion and redirect the savings. Tavio told national broadcaster YLE that "Ukraine will become a new recipient country."

In a separate interview with The Times, the minister claimed his country's "primary duty is to support Ukraine," arguing that it is "morally wrong" for countries that support Russia's "aggression" against Kiev to continue receiving development aid from Finland.

Comment: This seems to be a common approach in Europe. Either other countries support the Western war efforts or they will be cut off and sanctioned at worst. The peace proposal by Africa delivered by the African president was shunned and the delegation received humiliating treatment.

Comment: Poland with their stunt at blocking and humiliating the South African led peace delegation and now Finland's blackmail approach will only have the opposite effect. The whole world outside of the golden billion is watching and taking notes and it will only bring more allies to the Russian side. The same can be seen in the currency world, where countries outside the 'Garden' are discovering that it is possible to trade in their own currencies and support a multipolar world.

West sent Ukraine broken weapons - NYT

Ukrainian army mechanics
© Diego Herrera Carcedo/Anadolu Agency via Getty ImagesFILE PHOTO: Ukrainian army mechanics repair equipment at a hangar in Kharkov Region, March 18, 2023.
Weapons provided to Ukraine by the US and its allies have either required fixing or had to be cannibalized for parts, the New York Times reported on Monday. Kiev has also complained that equipment worth hundreds of millions of dollars and bought on contract has not yet been delivered.

As proof, the NYT cited documents provided by Ukrainian officials on condition of anonymity, who are frustrated with the West saying they had enough weapons for an offensive against Russia. The Ukrainian attack, which began earlier this month, has resulted in heavy losses of men and equipment without much to show for it.

Up to 30% of Ukraine's arsenal is undergoing repairs at any given time, according to the outlet, while a lot of Western equipment arrives "in poor or unusable condition."

One case in point involved 33 American M109 howitzers donated by Italy. According to Rome, they had been decommissioned years ago, but Ukraine asked for them to be refurbished for use. An American contractor was paid $19.8 million to do the repairs. In January, they delivered 13 of the guns, which arrived "not suitable for combat missions," according to one Ukrainian document.

Comment: It's no surprise that the Western arms being delivered are broken and unusable, because they know the stuff is just going to be blown to bits by the Russians anyways.

United Nations planning digital ID linked to bank accounts

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres
The United Nations (UN) is planning to introduce a global digital ID system that is linked to individuals' bank accounts.

The plan, which is similar to the system developed by the World Economic Forum (WEF), is outlined in three new policy briefs from the UN titled, "A Global Digital Compact, Reforms to the International Financial Architecture, and The Future of Outer Space Governance."

The goal of the briefs is to advance UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's "vision for the future."

Officially titled "Our Common Agenda," Guterres' "vision" should be given the green light in September 2024 during an event dubbed, "The Summit for the Future."

From the report:
Digital IDs linked with bank or mobile money accounts can improve the delivery of social protection coverage and serve to better reach eligible beneficiaries.

Digital technologies may help to reduce leakage, errors and costs in the design of social protection programmes.
