Generational corruption: How five members of Joe Biden's family enriched themselves through his connections

Political figures have long used their families to route power and benefits for their own self-enrichment. In my new book, Profiles in Corruption: Abuse of Power by America's Progressive Elite, one particular politician — Joe Biden — emerges as the king of the sweetheart deal, with no less than five family members benefiting from his largesse, favorable access and powerful position for commercial gain. In Biden's case, these deals include foreign partners and, in some cases, even U.S. taxpayer dollars.

The Biden family's apparent self-enrichment involves no less than five family members: Joe's son Hunter, son-in-law Howard, brothers James and Frank, and sister Valerie.

When this subject came up in 2019, Biden declared, "I never talked with my son or my brother or anyone else — even distant family — about their business interests. Period."

As we will see, this is far from the case...

Trump called top military brass 'a bunch of dopes and babies' in 2017: book

trump military generals
President Trump lashed out at top military brass in a contentious Pentagon meeting in 2017, slamming them as "dopes" and "babies," according to an excerpt of a forthcoming book.

The broadside occurred at a meeting in the so-called Tank, a prominent meeting room in the Pentagon, according to an excerpt from A Very Stable Genius: Donald J. Trump's Testing of America written by The Washington Post's Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker.

The journalists reported that attendees at the meeting included the then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Joseph Dunford, then-Defense Secretary James Mattis, then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Vice President Pence and other military and Cabinet officials.

The meeting was intended as a "tailored tutorial" for Trump to help prime him on the United States's alliances and international strategies, the pair wrote. However, after berating the Obama-era Iran nuclear deal and the war in Afghanistan, the president reportedly lashed out at his top advisers.

"I want to win," he said, according to the excerpt. "I wouldn't go to war with you people."

"You're a bunch of dopes and babies."

Comment: MoA has some more quotes from the paywalled article on WaPo:
The meeting in the Tank, a secure conference room in the Pentagon, were part of an effort to subdue Trump's insurgency against the top military's world view. and the presentation by top generals came off as a lecture which Trump immediately disliked:
An opening line flashed on the screen, setting the tone: "The post-war international rules-based order is the greatest gift of the greatest generation." Mattis then gave a 20-minute briefing on the power of the NATO alliance to stabilize Europe and keep the United States safe. Bannon thought to himself, "Not good. Trump is not going to like that one bit." The internationalist language Mattis was using was a trigger for Trump.

"Oh, baby, this is going to be f---ing wild," [White House chief strategist Stephen K.] Bannon thought. "If you stood up and threatened to shoot [Trump], he couldn't say 'postwar rules-based international order.' It's just not the way he thinks."
Bannon was right. Verbal scuffles about NATO, South Korea and U.S. bases followed. Then Trump took on the generals:
"We are owed money you haven't been collecting!" Trump told them. "You would totally go bankrupt if you had to run your own business."
The discussion turned to the war on Afghanistan:
Trump erupted to revive another frequent complaint: the war in Afghanistan, which was now America's longest war. He demanded an explanation for why the United States hadn't won in Afghanistan yet, now 16 years after the nation began fighting there in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Trump unleashed his disdain, calling Afghanistan a "loser war." That phrase hung in the air and disgusted not only the military leaders at the table but also the men and women in uniform sitting along the back wall behind their principals. They all were sworn to obey their commander in chief's commands, and here he was calling the war they had been fighting a loser war.
"You're all losers," Trump said. "You don't know how to win anymore."
When one reads the recent Congress testimony of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan one can see that Trump has a point. The war is long lost and the military is lying about it:
"There's an odor of mendacity throughout the Afghanistan issue . . . mendacity and hubris," John F. Sopko said in testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "The problem is there is a disincentive, really, to tell the truth. We have created an incentive to almost require people to lie."
...
"When we talk about mendacity, when we talk about lying, it's not just lying about a particular program. It's lying by omissions," he said. "It turns out that everything that is bad news has been classified for the last few years."
Trump's rant during the meeting with the generals continued:
Trump mused about removing General John Nicholson, the U.S. commander in charge of troops in Afghanistan. "I don't think he knows how to win," the president said, impugning Nicholson, who was not present at the meeting.
...
"I want to win," he said. "We don't win any wars anymore . . . We spend $7 trillion, everybody else got the oil and we're not winning anymore."
...
"I wouldn't go to war with you people," Trump told the assembled brass.

Addressing the room, the commander in chief barked, "You're a bunch of dopes and babies."
A drill sergeant act performed on recruits with four stars on their shoulders. I find that quite impressive. Those perfumed princes must have fumed.
The last president known to have called out the military in such a fashion was JFK.

US military now admits 11 troops were injured in Iranian strike on US base in Iraq

The U.S. military says 11 U.S. service members were treated for concussion symptoms following the January 8 Iran missile attack on a base in Iraq, despite earlier remarks by President Donald Trump that "no Americans were harmed" in the incident.

"While no U.S. service members were killed in the January 8 Iranian attack on Ain Al-Asad air base, several were treated for concussion symptoms from the blast and are still being assessed," Captain Bill Urban, spokesman for U.S. Central Command, said in a statement late on January 16.

"In the days following the attack, out of an abundance of caution, some service members were transported from Ain Al-Asad air base," he said, adding that the troops had been sent to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and Camp Arifjan in Kuwait for further tests.

Urban said that "when deemed fit for duty, the service members are expected to return to Iraq following screening."

There were some 1,500 U.S. soldiers at the base at the time of the attack. Most had been huddling in bunkers after being alerted about the incoming missiles.

Comment: The Iranians claimed several casualties, and cited internet rumors of dozens of troops sent to Israel for treatment.

There's no evidence for that. But an Arabic paper is claiming 16 American troops were killed in the attack:
16 US military men with fatal injuries sustained during Iran's retaliatory missile strikes on Ain Al-Assad base earlier this month have been taken to a hospital in camp Arifjan in Ahmed al-Jaber airbase in Kuwait, a leading Kuwaiti newspaper disclosed on Sunday.

The Arabic-language Al-Qabas paper quoted informed sources as saying on Sunday that the 16 US militaries, included some whose bodies had been severely burnt and some others who had sustained shrapnel wounds, have been transferred to a US military hospital in Kuwait under strict security measures.

It added that the wounded military men have gone under surgical operations and are still kept at the ICU section of the hospital.

According to the paper, several other US forces who had sustained mild injuries in Iran's missile strike are being treated in Iraq.

Trump lawyers slam impeachment as attempt to overturn election as House calls him 'threat to nation'

President Donald Trump's legal team accused House Democrats of trying to overturn the results of the 2016 election in a filing that lays out the White House's formal response to the two articles of impeachment passed last month.

Trump's lawyers slammed impeachment as a "dangerous attack on the right of the American people to freely choose their president" ahead of the election this November.

"This is a brazen and unlawful attempt to overturn the results of the 2016 election and interfere with the 2020 election, now just months away," the president's legal team said in its filing Saturday.

The filing was a response to a formal summons issued by the Senate notifying Trump of his impending trial and the charges against him. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, who will preside over the trial, administered an oath to senators on Thursday to do "impartial justice" with proceedings set to get underway Tuesday.

The House of Representatives, for its part, filed a brief Saturday outlining its case against Trump and called him an "ongoing threat to the nation." The brief accuses Trump of abandoning his oath to faithfully execute the nation's laws and betraying the public's trust.

"President Trump's misconduct presents a danger to our democratic processes, our national security, and our commitment to the rule of law," the House filing states. "He must be removed from office."

Comment: The fact is, every president has done something that would justify removing them from office. The thing about Trump is, none of the things they're accusing him of really meet that threshold. His relationship with the Israeli lobby, however, borders on treasonous. And he has illegally attacked a sovereign nation (Syria) and assassinated a general in a foreign army (Soleimani). He'll never be criticized for those actions.

Transparency: Putin says Russia will combat rewriting of WWII history with new free-to-all archive center - 'We'll shut your filthy mouths'

Moscow is to create the most extensive collection of WWII documents, open to all persons anywhere, to once and for all "shut the filthy mouth" of those seeking to rewrite history for short-term gains, the Russian president said.

Any person, Russian or non-national, will be able to access the archive, including through a website resource, and the ultimate goal is to debunk any disinformation about the most devastating conflict in human history, President Vladimir Putin pledged, during a meeting with veterans of the Great Patriotic War, held in St. Petersburg on Saturday.

The creation of the center would leave no chance to those willing to distort the truth about the war for their own political needs, he argued.
We will shut the filthy mouth of some public figures abroad, who open theirs only to achieve short-term political goals. We will shut them up with reliable and fundamental facts.

Infighting over Bibi's immunity bid: Israeli justice minister calls Knesset speaker to block vote on Netanyahu immunity committee

Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein has found himself under pressure from both Benjamin Netanyahu and from his political rivals, who have been struggling to see a separate Knesset Committee weigh the premier's immunity request over his corruption charges. Israel is in the meantime eyeing an unprecedented third general election in a year, on 2 March.

Justice Minister Amir Ohana Saturday insisted that Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein should not call a plenary vote to set up a committee that would look into Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's request for parliamentary immunity from his corruption charges - the panel that, according to Knesset legal adviser Eyal Yinon, could be convened ahead of the 2 March vote.

"Edelstein said something interesting: 'I don't accept the legal opinion of the [Knesset] legal adviser'. And now I expect him to stand by his words", Ohana told Channel 12 news Saturday, implying that if Edelstein is not inclined to call the plenum, he should not do so.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas criticizes US for Iran 'strategy'

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas
© Reuters/Johanna GeronGermany's Foreign Minister Heiko Maas arrived at a European Union foreign ministers emergency meeting to discuss ways to try to save the Iran nuclear deal, in Brussels, Belgium, January 10, 2020.
The foreign minister has condemned Washington's handling of the Iran conflict. Maas has advised following Europe's footsteps in diplomacy and called for further negotiations.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas criticized US President Donald Trump on Sunday for his policy of maximum pressure against Iran.

"We should not pretend that an externally induced regime change in Tehran will automatically improve the situation. That has gone badly elsewhere, like in Iraq," Maas told German newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

Since the US withdrew from the international nuclear deal in May 2018, tensions between Washington and Tehran have been running high. The US targeted killing of top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in early January followed by an Iranian retaliation attack on US military bases in Iraq has further strained the relations.

Maas added that "pure threats" and "military actions and threats" had not changed the behavior of the leadership in Tehran.

Assange: 12 minute hearing suggest grim picture of judicial indifference

Assange
© UnknownWikiLeaks founder Julian Assange
Assange's legal team denounced a series of irregularities in his preliminary hearing held on January 13 and expressed concern over his health.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who is fighting a legal battle against his extradition to the United States, will only be given an hour to review the evidence that will be presented by the prosecution against him in the next hearing scheduled on January 23. This was announced by judge Vanessa Baraitser of the Westminster Magistrates' Court in a preliminary hearing on January 13, Monday, that went on for barely 12 minutes. The judge also asked the defense to register a complaint against the Belmarsh prison authorities, where Assange is being held, for not allowing sufficient time for him to meet with his legal team.

In the ongoing trial which has been mired in controversies, Assange's defense team, led by Gareth Pierce, has been effectively denied a proper hearing before the court. The hearing on Monday was wrapped up in under 12 minutes on the pretext that there was a backlog of cases to be heard that day. Speaking to the media, Assange's lawyers further stated that the hearing was originally scheduled for January 14, Tuesday, but was moved a day ahead at the last minute. Due to this, Assange's defense team was not able to request for a meeting with him at Belmarsh on Tuesday, given that it was originally scheduled as the date of the hearing.

Comment: The treatment of Julian Assange, to date, has been a complete perversion of justice. One would think that in circumstances of such a high profile and volatile case, the court would go to the extremes to carefully evaluate proper procedures by authorities, as well as protection of rights of the accused. Slipshod and biased processes may open avenues for the defense, should such be recognized and acknowledged.

Phil Giraldi interview: Trump's Assassination-gate

Trump officials - including Trump himself today - have been steadily pulling back from initial claims after the January 3rd assassination of Iranian top general Soleimani that he was killed because of "imminent threats" of attack led by the Iranian. New evidence is emerging that the kill order had been given seven months ago and according to Israeli media, Netanyahu was directly involved in plotting the killing. Former CIA officer Phil Giraldi joins the Liberty Report to try and unpack the competing claims and whirlwind of lies surrounding the targeted killing. Watch today's program:
