The quiet before the storms in Ukraine, Gaza and Taiwan?

piers

Amid doubts about Biden's ability to effectively lead the U.S. in his remaining months as president, our enemies abroad might see an opportunity to alter the global balance of power.

There are three current hot or cold wars: on the Ukrainian border, in the regions surrounding Israel, and in the strategic space between Taiwan and mainland China. All three conflicts could not only expand within their respective theaters but also escalate to draw in the United States.

And all three involve nuclear powers.

Various Russian megaphones routinely threaten to use tactical nuclear weapons against Ukraine. Some boast about sending strategic nuclear bombs or missiles against its Western suppliers, especially as the costs of Russian aggression mount and the humiliation of Putin escalates.

Nuclear Israel and near-nuclear Iran have both exchanged attacks on their respective homelands — and promise to do so again.

China likewise on occasion existentially threatens Taiwan. Its freelancing generals and spokesmen periodically warn Japan and the U.S. of dire nuclear consequences should they intervene on Taiwan's behalf.

In all these theaters, there superficially appears to be stasis and deadlock: Israel is said to be bogged down in Gaza as it seeks to neutralize 400 miles of subterranean command-and-control installations and munitions, find and rescue surviving Israeli hostages, and take out the Hamas leaders. And no one believes that the degradation of Hamas will mark the end of the war, given the agendas of Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Iran, to attack periodically and chronically the Jewish state.

Comment: Assessments are backwards and upside down. US has its hand in all three scenarios. And Putin? An outright lie.

Comment: Mainstream media's distortions and outright lies aim to manage public perceptions and fix opinions, laying blame 'according to order' absent of facts.

Zelensky signs law to ban Ukraine's largest church

Vladimir Zelensky has signed a law that calls for the banning of any religious group suspected of having ties to Russia. It threatens to effectively shut down the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) - the largest faith-based organization in the country.

The Ukrainian parliament introduced the legislation earlier this week; it is expected to take effect in 30 days. After that, all the activities of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and all affiliated religious organizations will be outlawed.

The UOC will have nine months to sever all ties with the ROC, despite the Ukrainian church having already declared full autonomy from the Moscow Patriarchate in 2022, following the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict.

After signing the legislation on Saturday, the country's Independence Day, Zelensky released a video address stating that "Ukrainian Orthodoxy is today taking a step towards liberation from Moscow's devils."

Durov's arrest represents a new level of desperation from western elites

Pavel Durov, Emmanuel Macron,
© SCF
The arrest of Pavel Durov marks a new low point on the scumline of the side of the bath - the tub being western democracies and the line being their desperation to stay in power at the costs of controlling social media. Durov, who owns Telegram and lives in Dubai, could be in jail for months and possibly years on the trumped-up charges which the French state has conjured up simply because he refuses to allow any government to have a back door into Telegram. He has fought this tooth and nail for years with the west, in particular the U.S., playing every dirty trick in the book to get access to the platform for its own nefarious purposes - to destroy opposition figures, their strategies etc. - rather than what it is dressed up to be, identifying terrorists and international criminals.

As the UK ponders how its own state has sunk to a new totalitarian level in recent days with the arrest of its citizens who merely like a posting on a social media platform, the West has arrested this French Russian dual national genius who is charged with the crimes of those criminals active on Telegram. And so charges of terrorism and trafficking in minors, drugs and whatever else they can find on the platform will be made against him as someone abetting in the crimes. Of course, the same rules will not be leveled against Elon Musk who surely has criminals on his platform or for that matter any of the other social media platforms.

Comment: Youseff took down his own account and the Tate brothers are slimy grifters who gloat about being manipulative exploiters. Those two points aside, the rest of the analysis holds up just fine.

Best of the Web: In stunning letter to Congress, Zuckerberg admits Biden-Harris pressured Facebook to censor content

Mark Zuckerberg

Two years ago Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted to Joe Rogan that the FBI pressured Facebook into censoring the Hunter Biden laptop story.

Now he's participating in a Congressional investigation
.

In a stunning Monday evening letter to House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, Zuckerberg admitted that senior Biden administration officials "repeatedly pressured" Facebook teams to suppress information related to COVID-19 that the platform would not have otherwise censored - and the administration 'expressed a lot of frustration with our teams when we didn't agree.'

Zuck now says that Facebook should not have compromised its standards "due to pressure from any Administration in either direction."

"I believe the government pressure was wrong, and I regret that we were not more outspoken about it," reads the letter. "I also think we made some choices that, with the benefit of hindsight and new information, we wouldn't make today."

He's also committed and "ready to push back if something like this happens again."

Macron comments on Durov's arrest

French President Emmanuel Macron has denied any political motive for Saturday's arrest of Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov in Paris.

Writing on X on Monday, Macron insisted that Durov's arrest "is in no way a political decision" and took place as part of "an ongoing judicial investigation" in which the judges will ultimately decide the entrepreneur's fate.

"France is more than anything attached to freedom of expression and communication, to innovation and to the spirit of enterprise," Macron wrote, adding that "in a state governed by the rule of law, on social networks as in real life, freedoms are exercised within a framework established by law to protect citizens and respect their fundamental rights."

"It is up to the justice system, in complete independence, to ensure that the law is respected," the president said.

Macron rejects left-wing government

French President Emmanuel Macron has refused to accept the left-wing New Popular Front's candidate for prime minister, saying it would be a threat to "institutional stability," according to a communique released by the Elysee Palace on Monday.

The parliamentary election in July gave the left-wing alliance more seats in the National Assembly than the competitors, but not enough to govern, forcing the president to conduct successive rounds of talks to appoint a new prime minister and form a new government.

As president, Macron is responsible for confirming the new head of the government. However, he dismissed the idea of allowing the left-wing coalition to hold the office of prime minister, leaving the nation in a political deadlock.

"My responsibility is that the country is not blocked nor weakened," Macron said in a statement, claiming that a left-wing government "would be immediately censored by all the other groups represented in the National Assembly" and "the institutional stability of our country therefore requires us not to choose this option."

The parliamentary election in July left 577 seats in the National Assembly divided between the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) alliance with over 188 seats, followed by Macron's centrist alliance at around 161, and Marine Le Pen's National Rally at 142. The Republicans received 48 seats, while the remaining 38 were divided between minor parties.

UK PM warns of 'deep rot' at heart of country

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will deliver a grim speech to the nation on Tuesday, warning people to brace for "unpopular decisions" ahead. Starmer is also expected to blame the previous Conservative government for the state of the country.

In his first keynote speech since taking office in July, Starmer will claim that his government "inherited not just an economic black hole, but a societal black hole" from the Conservatives, according to prepared remarks shared with the British media.

"We have to take action and do things differently," the remarks continue. "Part of that is being honest with people about the choices we face, and how tough this will be. Frankly, things will get worse before we get better."

Starmer's predecessors presided over an historic decline in British living standards and a rise in energy costs and inflation, both of which soared after the UK cut itself off from Russian fossil fuels in 2022. According to Starmer's remarks, Labour "discovered a £22 billion black hole in the public finances" once in power, which will take "unpopular decisions" - presumably tax hikes in October's budget - to fix.

Comment: It'll be ironic for Starmer to complain about a rot at the heart of Britain seeing as it's him and his psychopathic compadres who've never listened to their citizenry that are the rot that's killing the country.

Trump lauds Russia's 'great winter fighting'

Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has expressed admiration for the Russian military's warfighting skills and vowed to end the Ukraine conflict before the end of the year if elected.

Trump addressed the Russia-Ukraine conflict as part of an hour-long interview posted on Monday. Advertised as "unfiltered stories of heroic events and current world issues," the show is hosted by former US Navy SEAL and CIA contractor Shawn Ryan.

"Russia's a great winter fighter," Trump told Ryan. "They beat Germany and they beat Napoleon. They're not easy to beat. And they are a massive military, and Ukraine isn't. But Ukraine has us giving them a lot of money."

The US and its allies have channeled more than $400 billion in aid to Kiev since the conflict began in 2022, including over $120 billion in direct military aid, according to estimates from the Kiel Institute, a German think tank tracking the contributions.

Comment: Taking stock of reality. For all his bluff and bluster at least Trump has the ability to acknowledge some glaringly obvious truths the rest of Washington seem keen to ignore.

Durov's arrest is 'hallmark of dictatorship' - Tucker Carlson to RFK Jr

Tucker Carlson, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
© YouTube / Tucker Carlson Network
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov's arrest in France, along with the US administration's encouragement of it, bear "the hallmark of dictatorship," American journalist Tucker Carlson has said.

The comments were made during an interview with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has recently announced the suspension of his campaign as an independent candidate for US president.

Durov was arrested in Paris last week, and is being held for questioning in connection to a broader cybercrime probe into illicit activities on the billionaire's end-to-end encrypted social media platform, the French authorities have said. Telegram generally refuses to share user data and chat logs with law enforcement, and Durov has claimed that this privacy-first approach has drawn attention from intelligence agencies around the world.

In the interview on Monday, Kennedy said the First Amendment to the US Constitution, which protects the right to freedom of expression from government interference, should also protect "misinformation," as well as information that "no one wants to hear."

Carlson replied that the administration of US President Joe Biden currently views anything that criticizes the "job that they're doing" as misinformation.

"With that in mind, you see the Biden administration encouraging France, [French President Emmanuel] Macron to arrest the owner and founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, who is, as of now, in a French prison," Carlson said, adding: "that's the hallmark of dictatorship."
