Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear.

It is a funny, entertainable and surprising idea, no doubt. It could add a laugh or two, a light-hearted moment in a stressful day. Surely it could. But I assure it is something that can only thrive in rich countries, in the midst of well-educated, well-to-do people.
And it's only so good, because it's surprising. By the way, I can tell you that it wouldn't last long in the most affluent parts of this city I live in, São Paulo - specifically the city's centre. Honest, working people would find it amusing at first, but later on it would be vandalised, as it always seems to happen in this chaotic urban niche. Com'on, people who refuse to give their money over to thieves have already been shot in a crowded street.
It is an idea designed by the rich, for the rich. Nothing more. As we would say here in Brazil: an idea by the white, prosperous, blue-eyed blond, for the white, prosperous blue-eyed blond. For developed countries, not for us. Or for the richest parts of the city, to which I don't usually go.
Summing up, all I can say - being truly honest - is: for a better world, we need a better, thorough education. Without it, forget peace and nice ideals. It doesn't make sense. Bandits thrive in the wonderful Brazil. I wish foreigners could see how dangerous it is here.
Ah.... you would instantly forget Ipanema, Copacabana, Rio, Rodrigo Santoro, yachts and so on and so forth. It is so easy to say: "Oh, I've been to Brazil". Oh, really? Come here with me, I'll show you the real Brazil.
A country where draconian laws are easily accepted by the overall majority, because everyone knows someone who has had his motorcycle taken with a gun pointed to his head in the middle of the traffick, or someone who got mugged in the street, be it night or day.
Have you ever read The Freedom Writer's Diary? Or seen the film? Well, now think of that. How could you put into work such ideas, in the poor, godforsaken districts, where whites are afraid to go to.
Rich people have no reason NOT to be open-minded, but it doesn't so happen with the working, ill-to-do, woefully equipped classes. It is not unusual for the most desperate ones to resort to crime. 49 new detention centres are being built - at this moment - in the outskirts of the city. How about that??
Would such funny ideas pan out in this no-man's land? I leave it open - because I am a realist, and realist person keeps a tiny, precious grain of hope - somewhere, but there. My kryptonite.
