Why is this news? Without any context at all, it is meaningless. A very simple and "harmless" explanation could be that the Air Traffic Control system in the EU altered the flight patterns to allow for more efficient routes, and these new routes fly over Cyprus. "no other region of Europe has seen such an increase in aircraft traffic" could also mean that the air corridor density over the EU is so high, moving around the corridors is not "obvious".
