A small plane attempting to make an emergency landing crashed into a semi, sending two people to the hospital on Wednesday morning.

The northbound plane was attempting to land on State Road 191 north of Vernal when it collided with a semi heading south around 8 a.m., said Cameron Roden, a spokesman for the Utah Highway Patrol.

The crash, which occurred near mile post 360 north of the Steinaker Reservoir, ripped off the left wing of the plane causing it to spin around and hit the back of the trailer.

Bart Hyde of Layton, 45, and his son Austin, 17, were taken to the Ashley Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries. The elder Hyde was piloting the plane, which was flying from Layton to Vernal, Roden said.

The semi driver, Jody Pixtin of Bluffdale, 27, did not need medical attention, Roden said.

The Hydes were released from the hospital about 12:30 p.m. in good condition, said Debbie Spafford, a hospital spokeswoman. Hyde and his son planned to travel to Salt Lake City to seek additional medical attention from their family physician Wednesday afternoon, she said.

No other injuries were reported. The reason the plane was making an emergency landing is unknown.
