People who witnessed the aftermath of yesterday's helicopter crash in the Kimberley say it's a timely reminder that medical services to remote parts of WA need improvement.

A helicopter carrying three passengers crashed just metres from the Imintje Community Store, 235 kilometres north-east of Derby.

Three of the people injured in the crash were waiting for over seven hours to receive medical attention from Royal Flying Doctors Service. James Shooter was at the Imintje Community Store and saw the chopper crash to the ground.

"When I heard the chopper coming back I went to the front of the store to welcome them back and saw the helicopter hovering about 50 feet from the ground. The helicopter just went into a spin and spun around about 3 or 4 times and then hit the ground. I ran over there as quickly as I could."

Imintje resident, Kevin Ross says there needs to be an airstrip build at the store incase an emergency of this scale happens again.

"It's an on-going thing that they've tried to get one here. I think what happened yesterday just highlights the need to have an airstrip handy for these sort of situations. maybe the powers at be will give it a bit more importance. Hopefully"
