Around the World

Business has returned to normal at the Baralaba Hospital in central Queensland, a week after the facility was closed due to a redback infestation.

Last week, the facility had to be emptied of staff and patents to enable the facility to be completely fumigated.

The rural director of nursing, Ellen Palmer, says she did not expect the story to spark such interest.

"I have had lots of calls from plenty of places, I think the most amazing one was I did an interview with a radio station in New Zealand and I didn't do an interview but I did get a call from a radio station in Los Angeles," she said.

The hospital will have to be emptied again in two to seven weeks, so the fumigation of the premises can be complete.

Pest controller Bruce Dekker says he was surprised at the number of redback spider eggs in the roof cavity

"Even a lot of spiderlings, like a lot of hatchlings were in there as well and at that stage we didn't see them as a major problem because we were at the point were we were ready to treat them fairly well, so yes there was a large number of spiders and eggs in the ceiling cavity," he said.
