Big Brother

USB drive that breaks through backdoor at crime scene

We're all for the end of evil things like child pornography and terrorism on the internet. But news that Microsoft's latest piece of hardware allows the police to quickly break through a PC's security to scan through the hard drive has to be described as a little Orwellian.

The USB device can be plugged into a PC and used to break through password and decrypt protected files, allowing the police to do quick on-site scans of suspects' computers for insidious files, conversations and emails.

Not for profit

"These are things that we invest substantial resources in, but not from the perspective of selling to make money," Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith told the Seattle Times.

"We're doing this to help ensure that the internet stays safe."

Of course, Big Brother is here to protect us all - but we can't help but worry that this technology would be a little problematical in the wrong hands.

The device was apparently rolled out to a handful of police forces in June last year, but we have yet to ascertain if they have made it across the pond to the UK yet.

Comment: "Of course, Big Brother is here to protect us all"

Naturally...

Of Course... By Al today

We need protection. Passwords, we don't need no stinking passwords. Betcha soon, coming to a dictatorship near you, we will be able to count on some new Bureau of Thought Crimes to help catch those pesky criminals too.!.!.! Catch those "bad guys" while they still are in the planning stages. Undoubtedly, the "good guys" must have instant, easy access to any PC in order to download those evil plans in conjuction for hard proof of their evil plans. I feel safer already...

This Is Nothing. However... By Scott

According to this:
[Link] MS claims that the USB drives contain publicly available tools, but they just made them run automatically to make life easier. Even if they are lying through their teeth, I'm not worried about this kind of thing; I'm worried about the kind of thing that intell agencies can do that is probably decades in advance of what the NSA could do in fictional movies like Enemy of the State. It is well-known that it's possible to remotely read emissions from keyboards, screens, etc. It is also well-known that the equipment that forms the backbone of the internet is required by law (US law, anyway) to contain backdoors for "legal wiretaps". That's what we DO know about. So, from there, just use your imagination to figure out what classified toys they have now... Of course, the only problem is that new toys like this one put more snooping power into more hands, instead of that power being concentrated into the hands of certain agencies.

Spot On Al By Appollynon

This criminalising people before their guilty of committing a crime already goes on in the UK to some degree, when we can be charged not with making a bomb as in the old days, but of being in possession of material that could possibly be used to make one, even if you had no intention of doing so. I wonder if these USB drives will come equiped pre-loaded with false evidence to plant in case they dont find what they want to see?

Well As Bush Said In Recent Interview.. By Bill2057

referring to "our enemies", "we need to know what they are thinking". Very soon all thinking will be criminalized since it leads people to figure out what is being done to them. Clearly this must be stopped at all costs. First step.. get rid of thinking aids such as nicotine... next find ways of finding thinkers and punish them harshly. Perhaps you should change the tag line for this website... "for people who think".
