I have mentioned this many times. Those strange sounds people are noticing is wind blowing across open pipes that are being stored prior to being buried. Like oil/gas pipes or water/sewer pipes. If they are positioned in a certain direction and the prevailing wind blows across the opening it will sound like a huge pan flute or any type of wind instrument. Many times it won't even be close by but a far enough distance that the sound will carry down wind. Even something like an exhaust stack from a power plant will create this sound when wind blows across the opening and be heard a distance away from it. Those near by don't hear it. Decades ago we had a similar situation where all of a sudden we could hear a strange sound only from our office. No where else in the compound just that one spot. I just started walking toward the sound until I came upon a recently delivered and placed stack of 4 inch cast iron pipe 10 feet long in our supply yard. Simply covering one end with plastic tarp stopped the noise...Sometimes it takes nothing more than logic and common sense to discover the truth.
Justan American I've seen high winds in the desert, with tractor trailers blown over, and hurricanes and, somehow, what ever 'windicators' might have been around, they ALWAYS showed signficant MOVEMENT.

While what you say makes perfect sense, as a one time pipe welder who has been around ginormous stacks of pipe, from small bore all the way up 84", HDPE/ Stainless / Carbon Steel, in some pretty windy places, and I have never heard the pipes 'sing'.....
