A heartfelt monument to all who died from the MH17 crash, made by the kind and poor people of Grabovo, East-Ukraine. "In memory of the 298 citizens who died. Innocent victims of the civil war."
Mayor Vladimir Berezhnoy of the small village Grabovo in the Donetsk People's Republic hopes that MH17 relatives will find their way to the site of the crash of flight MH17. "Regardless of all the problems, we invite all family members of the victims to come here", he said Wednesday on the spot where a monument will be built in memory of the victims.

"We want to do everything we can to help them. The people here are deeply saddened by the disaster. [...] I have feelings too, just like every other man here. I've seen many dead people. I don't sleep anymore. It was awful" Berezhnoy said.

On Wednesday, the Mayor personally helped with the erection of the monument. Having arranged for the materials to be delivered to the site, he noted that the foundation for the yet to be placed granite stone was not yet leveled, so he took a shovel and helped out.

Regardless of their poor financial situation, the mayor and citizens of Grabovo managed to spend just enough money to erect this small but meaningful monument. A loving act.

Local Dutch broadcaster NOS however was not that impressed with the genuine display of sympathy. Apparently, the people of Grabovo should have done better. Coming from a propagandist broadcaster that has been spewing lies and distorting facts about the situation in Ukraine since day one of the MH17 incident, we shouldn't be surprised at such heartless cynicism.

An NOS report by correspondent David Jan Godfroid stated:
Grabovo quickly builds a monument to commemorate MH17

A level, trowel, a couple of concrete slabs: these are what a group of around six people will have to work with to build a monument on a small hill in the village of Grabovo. This is where a large part of the MH17 plane crashed on July 17th, 2014.

The mayor of the village, Vladimir Berezhnoy, finds it is impossible to commemorate ithout a monument on the small hill. It won't be very special, because Grabovo has little money to spend. Just some granite, marble and text.

"I don't know yet what text will be put on the monument", said Berezhnoy, who is helping with the monument himself. "That's up to others. But it is to commemorate all those people who died from the plane crash."

On time

What the monument will look like, is still uncertain. The path around it still has to be constructed. However, the builders are 100 percent certain that it will be ready on time.

"I think that it already will be finished tomorrow", says one of them. Just in time for the commemoration that is organized by the village for the 17th of July.
Dutch blogger 'De Grijze Duif' wrote an excellent article in response to the piece above. He writes: "Just reading the title made the alarm bells go off. "Grabovo quickly builds a monument to commemorate MH17" "Quickly"? The impression I get here is that of a hurried task. Something that isn't very important or has little worth, but has been done at the very last moment as an obligation. It came across to me as disrespectful to the family of and the victims themselves. I quickly asked myself why they simply didn't use the headline "Grabovo builds a monument to commemorate MH17".

Duif highlights the use of deprecating terms by the Dutch media correspondent: "a couple of concrete slabs", "just some granite, marble, and a text", "it won't be very special". As he accurately says, the fact that the people of this village managed to collect enough money to even build a MH17 monument deserves particular credit. He continues to say that it isn't about how big, expensive or showy a monument becomes, what's important is that it comes from the hearts of the people - now, that is special.

Interestingly, The Netherlands hasn't spent one dime on the monument, regardless of the request by Grabovo. This little fact apparently isn't important enough to be mentioned by the Dutch mainstream media outlet.

So, while people in eastern Ukraine are forced by the Kiev junta to suffer horrible living conditions, thanks in large part to the US government and their European lapdogs, they still find the time and the money to build something for the MH17 victims and their families. Instead of being grateful, or heaven forbid, maybe help them out, some Dutch people here prefer to spend their time criticizing the people of Grabovo with thinly veiled contempt.
