Stunned medical staff couldn't believe their eyes as they watched a wild koala bear stroll in through hospital doors and make himself at home.

The furry animal was caught by the security cameras of a hospital in western Victoria, Australia as he made his way into the reception area of the building.

He then was spotted wandering around the corridors for a few minutes as he investigated his new surroundings.

Western District Health's chief executive Rohan Fitzgerald told ABC News: "He [the koala bear] seemed to know exactly what he was doing.

"After about three minutes, at about 3.30am, he investigated sufficiently and made sure everything was in order and then decided to exit the building."

Mr Fitzgerald added: "He wasn't that obvious to begin with. He entered the doors and they've opened automatically for him and that's come into our waiting room."

Staff decided to leave the koala bear to his own devices and within minutes the animal had exited the building again.
