Since the 7.2 earthquake in October of 2011, this region has been active continuously. Lake Van is a saline soda lake and has no outlets. Once it had an outlet but it was blocked by a volcanic eruption from the Nemrut volcano. The level of water in the lake rises and falls, sometimes dramatically.
