US marriage rate is lowest since 1920, including same sex couples

US marriage rate has dropped to 93 year low

The Census Bureau reported Thursday that the nation's marriage rate is the lowest since 1920, and the first-time inclusion of same sex married couples did little to reverse the decline.

According to Pew Research Center analysis, the marriage rate of Americans 18 and older hit a bottom of 50.3 percent in 2013, down from 50.5 percent in 2012. In 1920, the first year mentioned, 65 percent were married, and the marriage rate hit a high of 72.2 percent in 1960.

The new data did not put a number on the homes hosting same-sex married couples, though the Census last year estimated there were 182,000 households headed by gay couples.

While a big number, Pew noted that it compares with 56 million "headed by opposite-sex married couples," and that such a small percentage won't have a big impact on the overall marriage rate.

Comment: This is a continuing trend in the developed world, as marriage rates have been on the decline for decades. Since the world is controlled by psychopaths who have inculcated their values on society, it is not particularly surprising. Psychopaths are not able to make any long-term commitments and are incapable of forming relationships based on love and trust, because they have no capacity for either. Many people who care deeply about being in a loving relationship, have often found themselves caught in a relationship with someone psychopathic, as they are quite adept at charming their prey. After escaping from such ordeals, many people understandably shy away from commitment.

Well, I've always seen marriage as a part of the Matrix's bullshit. Part of the control system. It tells you how your relationship should work. And in a way it tells you "This person now belongs to you."
Marriage has little to do with commitment. People who are committed don't need marriage for that, and people who can't commit will just get married without committing themselves morally.
In fact, a relationship that can last for a long time without marriage is in my opinion stronger than a marriage, because then the commitment is by the couple's actual devotion to each other rather than by a paper with two signatures.
And as noted in the sott comment, dysfunctional and abusive relationships are often prolonged because there is this paper.
It's just another of the "rules" of the system, a form of abridging free will.
Relationships should be formed by people's conviction, not institutionalized.
So it's hard to say whether the decline of marriages is something negative or positive.
