Scientists are saying that the Sun is in a phase of "solar lull" - meaning that it has fallen asleep - and it is baffling them.

History suggests that periods of unusual "solar lull" coincide with bitterly cold winters.

Rebecca Morelle reports for BBC Newsnight on the effect this inactivity could have on our current climate, and what the implications might be for global warming.

Why is it so hot hot HOT in Australia then? These articles are always northern-hemisphere-centric, please can you give us a balanced spread of details. If the sun is asleep, how can we get to such high temperatures as 44 degrees (Celsius)?

It is so hot in Australia and so dry in the Western US because Earth attempts to balance itself out. It wants to be in equilibrium, but it cannot do so without the Sun driving the Jet Streams and Weather Systems. The High Pressure systems are locked hard, nothing to shove them along.
The real litmus test is Antarctica, where the Antarctic Circulation has thermally isolated the continent from the rest of Earth for at least the present Interglacial Period, and possibly the entire time that Antarctica has been at the South Pole. Antarctica is getting colder and growing more Ice/Sea Ice and melting later, because the Earth is shedding heat. Then you put in the rest of Earth and you get a flat temperature record for the last 14 years. The big falloff has yet to rear it's ugly head. That will be when Antarctica can no longer be contained, and there will either be a massive spillover or convective transfer at large scale... or both.
The table is set. Only the wakeup of the Sun can stop it now.

Weather != climate.

We are taught that in the summer time there is more daylight, yet at night it's so dark! When it's midnight in the summer you don't ask "Why is it so dark then?" do you?

I don't blame you though. Whenever there's a single earthquake, so many like to off about "Look at this earthquake it's proof there's a rise in earthquakes!" When single incidents don't mean anything, it's the aggregated statistics that matter.

@ rbateman - thank you so much! It's a question that been plaguing me. I am not up to the details of your post but I get the gist and know now where to begin looking to understand more of why this is so (the great heat here and western US).

Still wondering how can it be hot if the sun is "asleep" though? The answer is in your post I'm sure and I'll have a look around to understand more. Maybe they don't really mean "asleep".

everything comes in cycles, it has been hot in the Australian summer before and will again, a lot of temps are in cities they are getting hotter because of large amounts of concrete etc. it is a continent of extremes

Excerpt from an upcoming book on Earth Changes by SOTT.net Editor Pierre Lescaudron:

"Solar activity induces a compression in the ionosphere, which is more prominent at the level of the equator. This equatorial compression of the positively charged ionosphere ‘pushes’ the positively charged polar jet stream towards the north. Conversely, weak solar activity ‘decompresses’ the ionosphere at the level of the equator and allows the jet stream to move south, towards the decompressed equator.

This explanation could also account for the latitude difference of the jet stream in winter and summer. In summer, the northern hemisphere faces the Sun, so the northern ionosphere is more compressed by solar winds and the jet stream is pushed northwards. In winter, when the northern hemisphere receives less solar wind, so the ionosphere above the northern hemisphere relaxes and enables the jet stream to move back southward.

Therefore, if solar activity is weak, the jet stream should be observed at abnormally low latitudes. This is what has happened in recent years, with the jet stream as low as 15° north in winter (above North Africa) when it should be around 50° north (above Scotland).

A low-latitude jet stream means that the Arctic air located to the north of the jet stream can reach lower latitudes, in particular the ‘temperate’ regions. This overall shift to the south exposes low-latitude regions (southern U.S., southern Europe) to very cold conditions. In this way, a lasting decrease in solar activity would induce an overall cooling of the ‘temperate’ latitudes that would be increasingly less separated from Arctic air by a more frequently and abnormally south-moving polar jet stream.

Low solar activity pushes the jet stream south, but it also makes it slow and meandering. The jet stream can even ‘stall’. This phenomenon is also called a ‘blockage’. The correlation between weak solar activity and jet stream blocking was demonstrated in 2008. A blockage prevents the moist and relatively warm air above the ocean from reaching Western Europe and heating that part of the continent. It also stops separating the relatively warm air of the temperate latitudes from the cold air of the Aarctic latitudes. The encounter of those masses of air exhibiting very different temperatures can lead to extreme weather phenomena like massive rainfall, snowfall and violent winds.

The meandering jet stream can also generate very unstable situations such as ‘cold drops’ surrounded by hot air and, conversely, ‘hot drops’ surrounded by cold air. In the winter of 2012-2013, Europe and North America experienced several ‘abnormal’ cold waves, while more recently North America was hit with a record-breaking ‘polar vortex’ and Australia with a record-breaking heatwave. These anomalies are usually correlated with a weak jet stream."

imagine that air is like thick water.... pour some hot water into some cold water and you will see temperature (waves) as the two temperatures mix.. as the globe cools off the air flows change patterns.. this causes the precipitation and temperatures to change drastically locally.. the first couple years we will see insane weather extremes, then it will probably just be very cold everywhere... right now the air is mixing like you would see in the glass.... i think that is what the last guy was saying in a nutshell

Excess Carbon Monoxide pollutes and warms the atmosphere.
These are undeniable facts.

The Sun ALSO, not separately... ALSO influences the temperature of the earth, and possibly to the largest degree of any other factors.

Sun wins.

Global warming NOT disproven, just not as strong as Sun.

If you were putting ice cubes in a glass of water, and then I took your whole glass and put it in the oven... do you then conclude that ice cubes don't freeze water? OF COURSE NOT. The other outside influence is simply STRONGER.
