Former Labour Member of the British Parliament Clare Short says "Israel's claim to be a democracy is eroding very fast" after being threatened with arrest by the Tel Aviv regime's officials.

Short's remarks came following a decision by Israel's former Minister for Strategic Affairs Moshe Ya'alon to outlaw the Council for European Palestinian Relations (CEPR).

The move, enacted two weeks ago but revealed on Tuesday by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, means that all of the CEPR executives and directors could be detained upon arrival in Israel.

Short is also at risk of arrest as she is a member of the board of directors of the Brussels-based NGO.

She was an MP for Birmingham Ladywood from 1983 to 2010 and Secretary of State for International Development between 1997 and 2003.

"As CEPR is Palestinian led, and given Israel's track record, the Defence Minister's action is not surprising, but it is yet more evidence that Israel's claim to be a democracy is eroding very fast," Short said.

The Israeli regime declared that the CEPR is an "illicit organisation" and accused it of lobbying on behalf of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.

However, CEPR Director Arafat Shoukri told The Independent that the CEPR will take legal action against Tel Aviv for its "false accusations."

"The CEPR is a non-profit organisation and is not affiliated to any political party whether inside or outside Palestine," he said.
