"We have about 50% of the world's wealth but only 6.3% of its population. This disparity is particularly great as between ourselves and the peoples of Asia. In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. To do so, we will have to dispense with all sentimentality and day-dreaming; and our attention will have to be concentrated everywhere on our immediate national objectives. We need not deceive ourselves that we can afford today the luxury of altruism and world-benefaction."
~ US State Department, 1948

None of this, however, equates marijuana to any of the above mentioned substances--it's clearly not nearly as dangerous as them. It may, however, be linked to a serotonin deficiency:

And, as everyone else noted, this article is not studying marijuana OR THC and so its conclusions are not particularly relevant to anyone not consuming the unnamed compound that they tested.
Why is this article even on sott? Testing to see if we're paying attention?
"...a drug that mimics the effect of the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana..."
This is not to say that marijuana has no negative effects, but the fact that they didn't even use the real deal to arrive at their conclusion lands this in the round file of junk science. A study that "mimics" the scientific principle.
One of the problems is the usage among the pubescent . Too many people get hooked at such a young age and grow with it. Marijuana is a true savior when it comes to heightening our senses. This naturally produced plant, that comes from one of the many seeds of the earth is too crucified. Now, they are selling synthetic marijuana in smoke shops, as herbal incense. It does not make any sense. It is immoral on the whole.
They used some type of manufactured product instead of actual marijuana. I don't understand how so much pseudo science can continue to be passed off as credible and accurate. It's funny how you never read studies about the negative effects of Prozac or other such manufactured drugs. Yet there is a crusade against natural tobacco and natural marijuana and yet they don't use the actual products when they do these tests.
How can anyone in their right mind say something is detrimental without using the actual product? It's like me testing the negative side effects of apples and instead of using apples, I use GMO apples and find that there are adverse side effects using those apples. Then I make a statement saying all apples are bad, when in REALITY, it is only the GMO apples that are bad. Of course there are adverse side effects with the GMO apples, you used Frankenapples, duh!
It begs the question, did the results with actual marijuana turn up no negative side effects, so the testers had to change over and use synthetic types of marijuana to get their desired negative side effect? Knowing that I can't help but wonder who actually backed this study? Big Pharma?
It seems the best way to create poisons is alter natural substances to things not found in
nature or concentrate them beyond all reason.
It may be useful for study to isolate one ingredient , but more questions are raised than answered. Does the natural blend of chemicals have the same effect?
This study may illuminate the benefits as well as the potential dangers of THC. It is reasonable that
some would be harmed by a drug while others helped.
I am reminded of the comment someone made. A good Civil Engineer is one who can hallucinate
a bridge or freeway and then build it. Many would benefit from an increased ability to "hallucinate".
I don't see where they found new evidence linking schizo disorders. I only see a reference to past studies (which haven't been entirely conclusive, and have been challenged by contradictory studies) and a lot of general statements about schizophrenics. Am I missing something?
