An infant is dead as a result of an unidentified bacterial skin infection, according to CTV.

The baby boy was one of two children transferred to Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary from Lethbridge Regional Hospital late last week with what was originally speculated to be flesh-eating disease.

Hospital officials have confirmed the disease is not flesh-eating, but are still investigating what the babies could have contracted.

The other infant, identified as Annabell Forslund, remains in intensive care at the Children's Hospital having undergone numerous surgeries.

Family and friends gathered in the cafeteria of the hospital Sunday afternoon, but decline to comment on the infant's condition.

"Today is not a good day for us to talk," said one of the dozen people seated around the table.

The babies, both born at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital just weeks ago, are not related and came from different communities.

While Calgary Health Region officials could not confirm the death of the newborn boy, the cause of the infection or the condition of baby Annabell, Chinook Health spokeswoman Janine Ecklund confirmed the cases are not linked, adding "the investigation shows the two were most likely not hospital acquired."

According to Dr. Richard Musto, acting deputy provincial health officer, the infection poses no problem to the general public and the two cases are "terrible coincidences."
